Response of TLD-albedo and nuclear track dosimeters exposed to plutonium sources

Description: Neutron dosimetry has been extensively studied at Hanford since the mid-1940s. At the present time, Hanford contractors use thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD)-albedo dosimeters to record the neutron dose equivalent received by workers. The energy dependence of the TLD-albedo dosimeter has been recognized and documented since introduced at Hanford in 1964 and numerous studies have helped assure the accuracy of dosimeters. With the recent change in Hanford's mission, there has been a significant d… more

High spin states in neutron rich nuclei from spontaneous fission

Description: One fragment-{gamma}-{gamma} and three {gamma}-{gamma} coincidence measurements of the prompt {gamma}-rays from the fragments produced in the spontaneous fission (SF) of {sup 252}Cf and very recently of {sup 242}Pu were carried out with a 20 Ge detector ball at HHIRF. With our high statistics, {gamma}-{gamma}-{gamma} coincidences where the two gates are on transitions in the two partner fragments were extracted. Comparing the {sup 252}Cf and {sup 242}Pu data allowed unique placements of many tr… more

The legacy of Cf-252 operations at Savannah River Technology Center: Continuous releases of radioiodine to the atmosphere

Description: The iodine isotopes I-132, 1-133, I-134, and I-135, which have half-lives ranging from 53 minutes to 21 hours, are measured in the atmospheric effluent from the Savannah River Technology Center (SRTC) at the Savannah River Site (SRS) near Aiken, South Carolina. SRS is operated by Westinghouse Savannah River Company for the US Department of Energy (DOE). The isotopes` release rates range from 10 to 300 microcuries per week compared to the rate. The resulting annual dose from all iodine isotopes … more

Neutron multiplicities in spontaneous fission and nuclear structure studies

Description: New insights into the fission process can be gained by better quantitative knowledge of how the energy released in fission is distributed between the kinetic energy of the two fragments, the excitation energy of the two fragments and the number of neutrons emitted. Studies of prompt gamma-rays emitted in spontaneous fission (SF) with large arrays of Compton suppressed Ge detector arrays are providing new quantitative answers to longstanding questions concerning fission as well as new insights i… more

Survey of experimentally determined neutron cross sections of the actinides

Description: Experimentally determined neutron cross section data for heavy actinides involved in the reactor production chains leading to /sup 238/Pu and /sup 252/Cf were examined. The neutron energy region below one kilovolt is emphasized because these cross sections and reactions are important for thermal and near- thermal reactors. Included with the data summaries are brief descriptions of pertinent measurements in progress or plarmed for the near future at United States and European laboratories. Addit… more

Detection of uranium-based nuclear weapons using neutron-induced fission

Description: Although plutonium-based nuclear weapons can usually be detected by their spontaneous emission of neutrons and gammas, the radiation emitted by weapons based entirely on highly-enriched uranium can often be easily shielded. Verification of a treaty that limits the number of such weapons may require an active technique, such as interrogating the suspect assembly with an external neutron source and measuring the number of fission neutrons produced. Difficulties include distinguishing between sour… more

Neutron dosimetry for low dose rate Cf-252 AT sources and adherence to recent clinical dosimetry protocol for brachytherapy

Description: In 1995, the American Association of Physicists in Medicine Task Group 43 (AAPM TG-43) published a protocol obsoleting all mixed-field radiation dosimetry for Cf-252. Recommendations for a new brachytherapy dosimetry formalism made by this Task Group favor quantification of source strength in terms of air kerma rather than apparent Curies or other radiation units. Additionally, representation of this dosimetry data in terms of radial dose functions, anisotropy functions, geometric factors, and … more

Neutron activation analysis at the Californium User Facility for Neutron Science

Description: The Californium User Facility (CUF) for Neutron Science has been established to provide {sup 252}Cf-based neutron irradiation services and research capabilities including neutron activation analysis (NAA). A major advantage of the CUF is its accessibility and controlled experimental conditions compared with those of a reactor environment The CUF maintains the world`s largest inventory of compact {sup 252}Cf neutron sources. Neutron source intensities of {le} 10{sup 11} neutrons/s are available … more

The status of low dose rate and future of high dose rate Cf-252 brachytherapy

Description: This work describes the current status of the US low dose rate (LDR) Cf-252 brachytherapy program. The efforts undertaken towards development of a high dose rate (HDR) remotely after loaded Cf-252 source, which can accommodate 1 mg or greater Cf-252, are also described. This HDR effort is a collaboration between Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), commercial remote after loader manufactures, the Gershenson Radiation Oncology Center (ROC), and Wayne State University. To achieve this goal, seve… more

A new spontaneous fission mode for {sup 252}Cf: Hyperdeformation, cluster radioactivity, new levels

Description: Direct measurements of yields and neutron multiplicities were made for Sr-Nd, Zr-Ce, Mo-Ba, Ru-Xe, and Pd-Te from {gamma}-ray coincidence studies in spontaneous fission of {sup 252}Cf. Strong enhancement of the 7-10 {nu} emission channels is seen in the Mo-Ba data. Unfolding the Mo-Ba data revealed a new fission mode associated with the enhanced {nu} yields with much lower total kinetic energy going by {sup 108}Mo-{sup 144}Ba, {sup 107}Mo- {sup 145}Ba, and/or {sup 106}Mo-{sup 146}Ba.
