nD scattering at 180/sup 0/ for neutron energies from 200 to 800 MeV. [Preliminary results, differential cross sections, 200 to 800 MeV]

Description: In the expectation that information on the high momentum components of the deuteron wave function can be obtained from the scattering of hadrons of modest energy, the 180/sup 0/ excitation function is reported which was measured in nd elastic scattering for incident energies of 200 to 800 MeV. Differential cross sections are plotted. However, only a small fraction of the data are analyzed thus far. 17 references. (JFP)

Search for new particles in CDF

Description: Preliminary results on searches for new particles beyond the Standard Model are presented. The data were taken by the CDF collaboration at the Fermilab {bar p}p collider at a center of mass energy of 1.8 TeV. Limits on the masses of the gluino and squark in a minimal supersymmetric theory are given. The 90% confidence level asymptotic lower mass limits on each are 150 GeV/c{sup 2}. A special data run was taken to search for the diffractively produced sextet quark state {eta}{sub 6}. An {eta}{su… more

Anti pp searches for quark-gluon plasma at TeV I

Description: Three experiments that have been approved to run at TeV I are discussed from the viewpoint of their capability to search for evidence of the QCD phase transition in proton-antiproton collisions at 1.6 TeV. One of these experiments, E-735, was proposed as a dedicated search for quark-gluon plasma effects with a detector designed to study large total E/sub T/, low P/sub T/ individual particles. The other two, E-741 (CDF) and E-740 (DO), embody general purpose four-pi detectors designed primarily … more

Search for parity violation in polarized proton scattering at 6 GeV/c. [A symmetry, preliminary results]

Description: A small deviation is sought from the parity symmetry in proton--nucleon scattering. For 6 GeV polarized protons on H/sub 2/O a preliminary value of Ay = ..delta..sigma/P2sigma is found for the longitudinal asymmetry (include systematic errors) using ion chamber detectors, and Ay = (include systematic errors) using scintillator detectors. 4 references

Intermediate energy proton and light-ion scattering

Description: A review is presented of recent (1979-81) developments in the field of intermediate-energy proton and light-ion scattering from nuclei. New theoretical and calculational techniques of particular interest to experimentalists are discussed. Emphasis is placed on topics in nuclear structure physics - giant resonances, pion-condensation precursor phenomena, and polarization transfer (spin-flip) experiments - where intermediate energy proton and light-ion scattering has made new and unique contribut… more

Search for the top quark and other new particles at D0

Description: Preliminary results from the search for the top quark and other new particles in p[bar p] collisions at [radical]s = 1.8 TeV are reported. In a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 7.5 pb[sup [minus]1], one candidate event for top quark is found in the di-lepton channel. A lower limit for the mass of the top quark of 103 GeV/c[sup 2] (99 Gev/c[sup 2]) is obtained at 95% confidence level with (without) background subtraction. Status of searches for other new particles t… more

Spin-spin correlations in proton-proton collisions at high energy and threshold enhancements

Description: The striking effects in the spin structure observed in elastic proton collisions and the Nuclear Transparency phenomenon recently discovered at BNL are described in terms of heavy quark threshold enhancements. The deviations from scaling laws and the broadening of the angular distributions at resonance are also consistent with the introduction of new degrees of freedom in the pp system. This implies new s-channel physics. Predictions are given for the spin effects in pp collisions near 18.5 GeV… more

Study of charged particles associated with high-p/sub T/ photons and pions

Description: We report on the distributions of charged particles produced in association with high p/sub T/ prompt photons and neutral pions in pp collisions at ..sqrt.. s = 63 GeV and theta = 90/sup 0/ in the centre of mass. We find photons to be relatively unaccompained by other particles at small angles with respect to the photon, and thereby extract a measurement of the fraction of prompt photons due to bremsstrahlung production. The relative density of positive to negative particles in the system recoi… more

Empirical estimates of the proton-neutron interaction and diabolical points

Description: The use of constant-N contours in the ({omega},{lambda}) plane is demonstrated both for establishing diabolical points and for studying regularities and fluctuations in the spectrum of single-particle states. Likewise the average properties and fluctuations of empirical proton-neutron interactions, obtained from double differentials of the total energy with respect to N and Z, are discussed for the ground states of all even-even nuclei with N > 40 and as a function of the rotational frequency f… more

The use of the Fermilab antiproton Accumulator in medium energy physics experiments

Description: The Fermilab antiprotron Accumulator has been modified for use in a medium energy experiment. The experiment is conducted with circulating antiproton beam of momentum between 6.7 GeV/c and 3.7 GeV/c colliding with protons from an internal gas jet. Antiprotons are accumulated at the normal momentum of 8.9 GeV/c and then decelerated to the appropriate energy. It is necessary to cool the beam continually during the time it is colliding with the gas jet. The experiment requires new provisions for t… more

Effects of recent measurements on phase shift analysis of nucleon--nucleon scattering. [Below 250 MeV]

Description: Four recent measurements in pp and np scattering below 250 MeV are used to indicate the substantial influence that new experiments can have upon phase parameters derived from the expanded data base. The cases are described separately, and the collective effect upon energy dependent analyses is discussed. It is indicated that the types of change are far from negligible. 7 refs. (JFP)

The proton-neutron residual interaction in nuclear structure

Description: Although the importance of the residual T = 0 proton-neutron (p-n) interaction in inducing single nucleon configuration mixing, nonspherical nuclear shapes, collectivity, and phase transitions have been known for nearly forty years, its widespread ramifications have become more fully appreciated only recently as a unified picture of the effects of the p-n interaction is emerging. A phenomenological approach that has proved useful is the N{sub p}N{sub n} scheme and the associated concept of the … more

Parity violating total cross sections

Description: A diquark-quark scattering model for the parity-violating asymmetry in nucleon-nucleon scattering is described. Criticism of the model by Simonius and Unger is refuted. The strong energy dependence of the result, and the possibility of important non-valence contributions to the nucleon polarization, both support the need for further measurements at Fermilab and at Brookhaven energies. 9 refs., 7 figs.
