D0 papers on B-physics submitted to DPF '96: b-quark inclusive cross sections and b anti-b correlations using dimuons from the D0 experiment; Single muon production in the forward region at [radical]s=1. 8 TEV; Rapidity dependence of the inclusive J[psi] production in the forward region [radical]s=1. 8 TEV; A search for b [r arrow] X[mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]] and B[sup 0] [r arrow] [mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]] decays in p anti-p collisions at [radical]s=1. 8 TEV

Description: Paper 1: Using dimuons collected with the D0 detector during the 1993--1995 Tevatron collider run, the authors have measured the b-quark cross section and b[anti b] correlations as given by the difference in azimuthal angle between the two muons. Both measurements agree with the NLO QCD predictions within experimental and theoretical errors. (Three other papers are included in this report.)

A Search For The Z -> b anti-b Process at The D-Zero Experiment

Description: In 2001, the D0 experiment entered a new era. Run II of the Tevatron at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory began, and the collider became the highest energy particle accelerator in the world. Accordingly, the D0 detector had already undergone a series of upgrades in order to fully exploit the physics now within reach. These included improvements to the tracking, calorimetry, muon detection and triggering capabilities. In the Standard Model, the Higgs boson is the last piece of the puzzle… more

Jet Energy Scale Studies and the Search for the Standard Model Higgs Boson in the Channel ZH -> nu anti-nu b anti-b at D

Description: The D0 experiment is based at the Tevatron, which is currently the world's highest-energy accelerator. The detector comprises three major subsystems: the tracking system, the calorimeter and the muon detector. Jets, seen in the calorimeter, are the most common product of the proton-proton interactions at 2TeV. This thesis is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on jets and describes the derivation of a jet energy scale using p{bar p} {yields} (Z + jets) events as a cross-check of the … more

Search for Invisible Decays of a Light Scalar in Radiative Transitions Y(3S)->gamma A0

Description: We search for a light scalar particle produced in single-photon decays of the {Upsilon}(3S) resonance through the process {Upsilon}(3S) {yields} {gamma} + A{sup 0}, A{sup 0} {yields} invisible. Such an object appears in Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model, where a light CP-odd Higgs boson naturally couples strongly to b-quarks. If, in addition, there exists a light, stable neutralino, decays of A{sup 0} could be preferentially to an invisible final state. We search f… more

Naturalness and Higgs Decays in the MSSM with a Singlet

Description: The simplest extension of the supersymmetric standard model--the addition of one singlet superfield--can have a profound impact on the Higgs and its decays. We perform a general operator analysis of this scenario, focusing on the phenomenologically distinct scenarios that can arise, and not restricting the scope to the narrow framework of the NMSSM. We reexamine decays to four b quarks and four {tau}'s, finding that they are still generally viable, but at the edge of LEP limits. We find a broad… more

Measurement of the top pair production cross section at CDF using neural networks

Description: In the Tevatron accelerator at Fermilab protons and antiprotons are collided at a 1.96 TeV center of mass energy. CDF and D0 are the two experiments currently operating at the Tevatron. At these energies top quark is mostly produced via strong interactions as a top anti-top pair (t{bar t}). The top quark has an extremely short lifetime and according to the Standard Model it decays with {approx} 100% probability into a b quark and a W boson. In the ''lepton+jets'' channel, the signal from top pa… more

Search for the Standard Model Higgs boson in final states with $b$ quarks at the Tevatron

Description: We present the result of searches for a low mass Standard Model Higgs boson produced in association with a W or a Z boson at a center-of-mass energy of {radical}s = 1.96 TeV with the CDF and D0 detectors at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The search is performed in events containing one or two b tagged jets in association with either two leptons, or one lepton and an imbalance in transverse energy, or simply a large imbalance in transverse energy. Datasets corresponding to up to 8.5 fb{sup -1} … more

Recent Results on Semileptonic Decays at Babar

Description: Some recent BABAR results on semileptonic decays are presented. They focus on the determination of the CKM matrix elements |V{sub ub}| and |V{sub cb}| in inclusive and exclusive b {yields} u{ell}v and b {yields} c{ell}v decays, and on form factors measurement in exclusive c {yields} s{ell}v decays. Semileptonic decays play a crucial role in the determination of the unitarity triangle parameters: decays of the b quark give access to the CKM matrix elements |V{sub ub}| and |V{sub cb}|, while char… more

Black Hole Production at the LHC by Standard Model Bulk Fields in the Randall-Sundrum Model.

Description: We consider the production of black holes at the LHC in the Randall-Sundrum (RS) model through the collisions of Standard Model(SM) fields in the bulk. In comparison to the previously studied case where the SM fields are all confined to the TeV brane, we find substantial suppressions to the corresponding collider cross sections for all initial states, i.e., gg, qq and gq, where q represents a light quark or anti-quark which lie close to the Planck brane. For b quarks, which are closer to the Te… more

Search for neutral Higgs bosons in the multi-$b$-jet topology in 5.2fb$^{-1}$ of $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV

Description: Data recorded by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider are analyzed to search for neutral Higgs bosons produced in association with b quarks. The search is performed in the three-b-quark channel using multijet-triggered events corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.2 fb{sup -1}. In the absence of any significant excess above background, limits are set on the cross section multiplied by the branching ratio in the Higgs boson mass range 90 to 300 GeV, extending the excluded … more

Quarkonium at STAR

Description: The STAR detector is capable of reconstruction the J/{psi} meson in its dielectron decay channel, along with continuum dielectrons from heavy quark decay. The limitation is not instrumental--the ability of the STAR detector to identify electrons--rather, the primary limitation is yield. We expect to reconstruct of order 10,000 events per year in the bin of highest centrality, with perhaps ten times that many integrated over all bins of centrality. This is enough for a rather detailed study of J… more

B physics results at CDF

Description: In this paper we present B physics results from 1.8 Tev proton-antiproton collisions recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). Measurements of the B meson masses, lifetimes, B{degrees}{bar B}{degrees} mixing, and polarization are described. The prospects for measuring CP violation with the upgraded Fermilab collider and CDF detector are also briefly described.

Measurement of the W boson polarization in top decay at CDF at s**(1/2) = 1.8-TeV

Description: The polarization of the W boson in t {yields} Wb decay is unambiguously predicted by the Standard Model of electroweak interactions and is a powerful test of our understanding of the tbW vertex. We measure this polarization from the invariant mass of the b quark from t {yields} Wb and the lepton from W {yields} {ell}{nu} whose momenta measure the W decay angle and direction of motion, respectively. In this paper we present a measurement of the decay rate (f{sub V + A}) of the W produced from th… more

Form Factors for $B$ to $Kll$ Semileptonic Decay from Three-Flavor Lattice QCD

Description: We study the B {yields} Kl{sup +}l{sup -} semileptonic decay process in three-flavor lattice QCD. We analyze several ensembles generated by theMILC collaboration at different lattice spacings and sea-quark masses. We use the asqtad improved staggered action for the light quarks and the clover action with the Fermilab interpretation for the heavy b quark. We present preliminary results for the vector current induced form factors for a range of kaon energies. Our analysis includes chiral and cont… more

Quarkonium production in proton antiproton collisions at the Tevatron

Description: Charmonium and bottomonium production is studied using {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} data samples collected by the CDF and D{null} experiments during the 1992-96 {ital p{anti p}} collider run at the Fermilab Tevatron. The inclusive cross sections as a function of the transverse momentum of reconstructed quarkonium states are measured. The results are compared with theoretical predictions, which take into account different quarkonium production mechanisms.

Using collider event topology in the search for the six-jet decay of top quark-antiquark pairs

Description: The authors investigate the use of the event topology as a tool in the search for the six-jet decay of top-pair production in proton-antiproton collisions at 1.8 TeV. Modified-Fox-Wolfram shape variables, {cflx H}{sub {ell}}, are employed to help distinguish the top-pair signal from the ordinary QCD multi-jet background. The {cflx h}{sub {ell}}`s can be constructed directly from the calorimeter cells or from jets. Events are required to lie in a region of {cflx H}{sub {ell}}-space defined by L{… more

Particle physics -- Future directions

Description: Wonderful opportunities await particle physics over the next decade, with the coming of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN to explore the 1-TeV scale (extending efforts at LEP and the Tevatron to unravel the nature of electroweak symmetry breaking) and many initiatives to develop our understanding of the problem of identity: what makes a neutrino a neutrino and a top quark a top quark. BTeV level 1 vertex trigger

Description: BTeV is a B-physics experiment that expects to begin collecting data at the C0 interaction region of the Fermilab Tevatron in the year 2006. Its primary goal is to achieve unprecedented levels of sensitivity in the study of CP violation, mixing, and rare decays in b and c quark systems. In order to realize this, it will employ a state-of-the-art first-level vertex trigger (Level 1) that will look at every beam crossing to identify detached secondary vertices that provide evidence for heavy quar… more
