Development of Uranium Nitride-Stainless Steel Dispersion Fuel Elements

Description: In research in support of the GCRE, procedures for the fabrication of stainless steel-clad flat-plate fuel elements having a core of 28 w/o UN dispersed in an iron-18 w/o chromium--14 w/o nickel--2.5 w/o molybdenum matrix were developed. The preparation of UN and its compatibility with the components of the matrix alloy were studied. The UN for the program was prepared by nitriding uranium metal at 850 C and then dissociating the U/sub 2/N/sub 3/ produced to UN in a vacuum at 1300 C. In compati… more

Preferred Orientation in Rolled and in Recrystallized High-Purity Uranium Rod. Final Report of Metallurgy Program.4.1.17

Description: The preferred orientation of a relatively small piece of high-purity uranium rod, rolled to an 85% reduction at 300 deg C, has been determined in the as-rolled and in the recrystallized conditions. The 12 different charts obtained indicated that the as-rolled texture could be described as a duplex (041) and (352) with the (041) being the major component and with considerable spread about each component. The recrystallized rod showed approximate (041) and (392) components with considerable sprea… more

FLIP--AN IBM-704 CODE TO SOLVE THE PL AND DOUBLE-PL EQUATIONS IN SLAB GEOMETRY

Description: A method of obtaining the few-group form of the P/sub L/ and double-P/ sub L/ equations is given for slab geometry. Anisotropic scattering is allowed within specified limitations. The difference equations and associated recursion relations are discussed; the features and restrictions of FLIP are explained; and a detailed discussion of the input and output is presented. Operating intructions are given, and a sample problem is included. (auth)

CALCULATION OF TRANSPORT CROSS SECTIONS

Description: Many elements exhibit anisotropic scattering at energies of interest in reactor calculations. A method is presented for the calculation of transport cross sections including the observed anisotropy. (auth)

HERD 1, 2, AND 3--IBM-704 CODES USED TO SOLVE THE ONE-DIMENSIONAL, ONE- VELOCITY TRANSPORT EQUATION WITH ISOTROPIC SCATTERING

Description: BS>The HERD codes furnish a numerical approximation to the one- dimensional, single energy transport equation in slab geometry. The primary purpose of HERD 2 and 3 is to compute blackness coefficients. The limitations of the codes are given and the preparation of input described. (auth)

Quarterly Report for October, November, and December 1957

Description: 3 9 8 4 3 3 3 6 9 6 5 5 have been started on possible urania-ceramic fuels with magnesia, alumina, zirconia, magnesia-- zirconia and calcia--zirconia. Mixtures of 45 magnesia--45 zirconia and 9 magnesia--81 zirconia by weight appeared to give good preliminary promise. Work on ThO/sub 2/--10 wt.% UO/sub 2/ has centered about improvement in density of pellets and elimination of cracking and open porosity. Efforts to increase the percentage of urania in thoria--urania have met with considerable su… more

PRELIMINARY EXPERIMENTS ON IRRADIATION CYCLING AND PARTIAL BETA-PHASE IRRADIATION OF URANIUM

Description: A group of uranium specimens were irradiated under conditions in which some of the specimens were irradiated continuously while others were cycled in and out of a reactor. Although most of the specimens were irradiated under conditions in which they were entirely in the alpha phase, some were irradiated so that their centers were above alpha-phase temperatures. Both highly textured material (300 deg C rolled) and nomimally randomly oriented material (300 deg C rolled and beta-quenched) were stu… more

Thermodynamics of Irreversible Processes: The Experimental Verification of the Onsager Reciprocal Relations

Description: In the last twenty years a thermodynamic theory of irreversible processes (TIP) has been vigorously developed which has been able to treat irreversible phenomena in a detailed way. The present macroscopic form of the theory was suggested primarily by the statistical mechanical investigations of Onsager. The presently available experimental data are collected for a variety of quite different irreversible phenomena and it is shown that this evidence does indeed verify the Onsager Reciprocal Relat… more
