Final Report on The Theory of Fusion Plasmas

Description: Report describes theoretical research in the theory of fusion plasmas funded under grant DE-FG02-04ER54737. This includes work on: explosive instabilities, plasma turbulence, Alfven wave cascades, high beta (pressure) tokamaks and magnetic reconnection. These studies have lead to abetter understanding of fusion plasmas and in particular the future behavior of ITER. More than ten young researchers were involved in this research -- some were funded under the grant.

Alfven Continuum and Alfven Eigenmodes in the National Compact Stellarator Experiment

Description: The Alfven continuum (AC) in the National Compact Stellarator Experiment (NCSX) is investigated with the AC code COBRA. The resonant interaction of Alfven eigenmodes and the fast ions produced by neutral beam injection is analyzed. Alfven eigenmodes residing in one of the widest gaps of the NCSX AC, the ellipticity-induced gap, are studied with the code BOA-E.

Electro Acceleration in a Geomagnetic Field Line Resonance

Description: A hybrid MHD kinetic electron model in dipolar coordinates is used to sim- ulate the upward current region of a geomagnetic Field Line Resonance (FLR) system for a realistic ambient electron temperatures of a keV. It is found that mirror force e ects result in potential drops su#14;cient to accelerate electrons to energies in excess of a keV in support of eld aligned currents on the or- der of 0.5 #22;µA/m2. The wave energy dissipated in this acceleration would com- pletely damp an undriven FLR… more

Nonlinear interaction of fast particles with Alfven waves in toroidal plasmas

Description: A numerical algorithm to study the nonlinear, resonant interaction of fast particles with Alfven waves in tokamak geometry has been developed. The scope of the formalism is wide enough to describe the nonlinear evolution of fishbone modes, toroidicity-induced Alfven eigenmodes and ellipticity-induced Alfven eigenmodes, driven by both passing and trapped fast ions. When the instability is sufficiently weak, it is known that the wave-particle trapping nonlinearity will lead to mode saturation bef… more
