LABORATORY DEVELOPMENT OF A CARRIER-PRECIPITATION PROCESS FOR THE RECOVERY OF STRONTIUM FROM PUREX WASTES

Description: Strontium recovery from Purex 1WW was investigated with simulated feeds and tracer activities. Initial experiments demonstrated recovery of over 70% of the strontium by sulfate precipitation from partially neutralized 1WW by either increasing the sulfate concentration to about 3 M or by adding carriers such as lead. Precipitation of iron was avoided by addition of one or more moles of tartrate per two moles of iron. Precipitation at elevated temperatures and addition of lead after pH adjustment… more

Combinatorial Approach for the Discovery of New Scintillating Materials SBIR Phase I Final Report Report # DOE/ER/84310

Description: The combinatorial approach for the discovery of new scintillating materials has been investigated using the wet-chemical (sol-gel) synthesis methods. Known scintillating compounds Lu2SiO5 (LSO) and (LuAl)O3 (LAO) and solid solutions in the systems of Lu2O3 -Y2O3 – SiO2 (CeO2-doped) (LYSO) and Lu2O3 -Y2O3 – Al2O3 (CeO2 –doped) (LYAO) were synthesized from sol-gel precursors. Sol-gel precursors were formulated from alkoxides and nitrates and acetates of the cations. Sol-gel solution precursors we… more

The preparation of accelerator targets by the evaporation of acetate-organic solutions in the presence of NH/sub 3/ gas

Description: The chemical methods described in this paper have been developed for preparation of isotopic targets for bombardment by accelerator-produced ions. Three systems are compared: nitrate-, chloride-, and acetate-organic solutions. The best method was found to be the metallic acetate-organic solution system, evaporated onto the substrate in the presence of ammonia gas. A detailed procedure is given for this method. The targets obtained by the acetate-organic solution system are uniform and adherent.… more

A novel approach to highly dispersing catalytic materials in coal for gasification

Description: This project seeks to develop a technique, based on coal surface properties, for highly dispersing catalysts in coal for gasification and to investigate the potential of using potassium carbonate and calcium acetate mixtures as catalysts for coal gasification. The lower cost and higher catalytic activity of the latter compound will produce economic benefits by reducing the amount of K{sub 2}CO{sub 3} required for high coal char reactivities.

Biological Upgrading of Coal-Derived Synthesis Gas: Final Report

Description: The technical feasibility of the biological conversion of coal synthesis gas to methane has been demonstrated in the University of Arkansas laboratories. Cultures of microorganisms have been developed which achieve total conversion in the water gas shift and methanation reactions in either mixed or pure cultures. These cultures carry out these conversions at ordinary temperatures and pressures, without sulfur toxicity. Several microorganisms have been identified as having commercial potential f… more

Solid-surface luminescence analysis

Description: We have characterized several interactions that are very important in solid-matrix luminescence. With silica gel chromatoplates and filter paper, simple equations were derived for calculating the individual contributions to the percent decrease in luminescence due to either moisture or to a quenching gas. For sodium acetate as a solid matrix and p-aminobenzoate as a model compound, it was concluded that p-aminobenzoate was incorporated into the crystal structure of sodium acetate, and the tripl… more

Non-aqueous polypyrrole colloids: Synthesis and characterization

Description: The preparation of sterically-stabilized polypyrrole colloids via a dispersion polymerization route in non-aqueous media is described for the first time. Pyrrole polymerization was achieved using FeCl/sub 3/ as an oxidant/dopant in organic solvents such as methyl acetate, methyl formate and propyl formate. Macroscopic precipitation was prevented by the use of poly (vinyl acetate) as a polymeric surfactant. Other surfactants, used successfully in aqueous media, were incompatible and consequently… more

Nuclear magnetic relaxation studies of semiconductor nanocrystals and solids

Description: Semiconductor nanocrystals, small biomolecules, and {sup 13}C enriched solids were studied through the relaxation in NMR spectra. Surface structure of semiconductor nanocrystals (CdS) was deduced from high resolution {sup 1}H and {sup 13}C liquid state spectra of thiophenol ligands on the nanocrystal surfaces. The surface coverage by thiophenol was found to be low, being 5.6 and 26% for nanocrystal radii of 11.8 and 19.2 {angstrom}. Internal motion is estimated to be slow with a correlation tim… more
