Concept of a (1-. cap alpha. ) performance confidence interval

Description: A multi-input, single-output system is assumed to be represented by some model. The distribution functions of the input and the output variables are considered to be at least obtainable through experimental data. Associated with the computer response of the model corresponding to given inputs, a conditional pseudoresponse set is generated. This response can be constructed by means of the model by using the simulated pseudorandom input variates from a neighborhood defined by a preassigned probab… more

Multi-grid and ICCG for problems with interfaces

Description: Computation times for the multi-grid (MG) algorithm, the incomplete Cholesky conjugate gradient (ICCG) algorithm (J. Comp. Phys. 26, 43-65 (1978); Math. Comp. 31, 148-162 (1977)), and the modified ICCG (MICCG) algorithm (BIT 18, 142-156 (1978)) to solve elliptic partial differential equations are compared. The MICCG and ICCG algorithms are more robust than the MG for general positive definite systems. A major advantage of the MG algorithm is that the structure of the problem can be exploited to… more

Digital simulation and modeling of nonlinear stochastic systems

Description: Digitally generated solutions of nonlinear stochastic systems are not unique, but depend critically on the numerical integration algorithm used. Some theoretical and practical implications of this dependence are examined. The Ito-Stratonovich controversy concerning the solution of nonlinear stochastic systems is shown to be more than a theoretical debate on maintaining Markov properties as opposed to utilizing the computational rules of ordinary calculus. The theoretical arguments give rise to … more

Refinements to the Boolean approach to automatic data editing

Description: Automatic data editing consists of three components: identification of erroneous records, identification of most likely erroneous fields within an erroneous record (fields to impute), and assignment of acceptable values to failing records. Moreover the types of data considered naturally fall into three categories: coded (categorical) data, continuous data, and mixed data (both coded and continuous). For the case of coded data, a natural way to approach automatic data is commonly referred to as … more

Some properties of the log-Laplace distribution

Description: A random variable Y is said to have the Laplace distribution or the double exponential distribution whenever its probability density function is given by lambda exp(-lambda abs. value y), where -infinity < y < infinity and lambda > 0. The random variable X = exp(Y) is said to have the log-Laplace distribution. With the problem of extrapolation to low doses in dose response curves as motivation, an axiomatic characterization of the log-Laplace distribution is obtained. 1 figure.
