Progress Relating to Civilian Applications During February 1960

Description: Preliminary results from electrical studies indicate that the "valence- compensated", air-fired U/sub 3/O/sub 8/-La/sub 2/O/sub 3/ solid solutions containing greater than equimolar amounts of La/sub 2/O/sub 3/ are poor conductors. Progress is reported on work devoted to fabrication and evaluation of U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ solid solutions contairing 40. 50 and 60 mole% La/sub 2/O/ sub 3/. and a sample containing 25 mole% Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and MgO each. In an investigation on the effects of combined ult… more

Neutron scattering studies of heavy Fermions. [CeAl/sub 3/, UBe/sub 13/, CeCu/sub 2/Si/sub 2/, CeCu/sub 6/, ThBe/sub 13/, UPt/sub 3/, U/sub 2/Zn/sub 17/]

Description: Heavy Fermions are f electron materials characterized by a large linear term in the low temperature specific heat and a large magnetic susceptibility at low temperatures. This implies that there is a narrow peak in the f electron density of states at the Fermi energy. Typical examples are CeAl/sub 3/, UBe/sub 13/, CeCu/sub 2/Si/sub 2/, CeCu/sub 6/, U/sub 2/Zn/sub 17/ and UPt/sub 3/. Neutron scattering measurements can play an important role in understanding the magnetic interactions in these sy… more

Pulsed reactivity measurements of large /sup 235/U--Al castings in H/sub 2/O

Description: The safe storage and handling of large /sup 235/U-Al castings at the Savannah River Plant are assured by limiting the number of fuel pieces and their spacing such that the k/sub eff/ calculated by KENO-IV with Hansen-Roach cross sections does not exceed some conservative limit with complete, accidental water immersion. For economic reasons, the conservative limit on the calculated k/sub eff/ is generally chosen as high as possible consistent with an accurate knowledge of the margin of error in … more

The effect of crystal structure stability on the mobility of gas bubbles in intermetallic uranium compounds

Description: Irradiation experiments with certain low-enrichment, high-density, uranium-base intermetallic alloys that are candidate reactor fuel materials, such as U/sub 3/Si and U/sub 6/Fe, have revealed extraordinarily large voids at low and medium fuel burnup. This phenomenon of breakaway swelling does not occur in other fuel types, such as U/sub 3/Si/sub 2/ and UAl/sub 3/, where a distribution of relatively small and stable fission gas bubbles forms. In situ transmission electron microscope observation… more

INVESTIGATIONS OF CARBIDES AS CATHODES FOR THERMIONIC SPACE REACTORS. Quarterly Progress Report for the Period Ending May 31, 1963

Description: Two long-term test cells were fabricated and tested. One was loaded with a 30 UC--70 ZrC sample and the other with a 90 UC--10 ZrC samrple. The rates of vaporization of these samaples in vacuum were determined both in the absence and in the presence of a Ni anode maintained at 983 deg K with an electrode spacirig of 20 mils, hr order to set the baseline values. Measurement of the rates of vaporization of these samples under these conditions in the presence of Cs vapor at a pressure of about 1.8… more

/sup 57/Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy of U/sub 6/Fe

Description: Samples of U/sub 6/Fe were prepared by arc melting U and enriched /sup 57/Fe. The samples display superconducting transitions which are sensitive to long-term exposure to air. Room temperature spectra of U/sub 6/Fe typically display a majority site A (quadrupole splitting ..delta.. = 0.749(3) mm/s, isomer shift delta = 0.482(6) mm/s relative to Cu) and a minority site B (..delta.. = 0.55(3) mm/s, sigma = 0.12(3) mm/s) with the site intensity ratio (I/sub B//I/sub A/) typically 0.05 to 0.10. The… more

Ultrasonic measurement of elastic moduli of 17-4 pH stainless steel and uranium -2 molybdenum from -40/sup 0/C to 800/sup 0/C

Description: Young's Modulus, shear modulus, and Poisson's ratio for 17-4 pH stainless steel and uranium -2 molybdenum are calculated from ultrasonic longitudinal and shear velocities determined from -40/sup 0/C to 800/sup 0/C. The ultrasonic velocities were determined at elevated temperatures using a through-transmission buffer rod arrangement. An indium-gallium slurry bond was used as an ultrasonic couplant between Cupernickel 10 alloy buffer rods and the specimen. Microstructural changes and ph… more

Experiments on Heavy Electron and High T/sub c/ Oxide Superconductors. [Gd-doped (U,Th)Be/sub 13/; RBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/]

Description: In the first part of this paper, we briefly describe some of our efforts to determine the type of pairing and pairing mechanisms that are associated with the superconductivity of heavy electron materials by means of H/sub c2/(T) measurements in Gd-doped (U/sub 1-x/Th/sub x/)Be/sub 13/ alloys. An account of some of our recent work on the new high T/sub c/ copper oxide superconductors is given in the second part of the paper. 30 refs., 12 figs.

Superconductivity in metastable bcc alloys containing neptunium

Description: The possibility of superconductivity in elemental Np has led to a study of superconductivity in bcc solid solutions alloys containing neptunium. Ternary alloys of the form (Np/sub x/U/sub 1-x/)/sub 0.82/Mo/sub 0.18/ and (Np/sub x/U/sub 1-x/)/sub 0.8/Nb/sub 0.2/ were prepared using a rapid quench from the melt. Both the addition of the transition metal and the quench were necessary to retain cubic alloys at room temperature. Superconductivity persisted to x = 0.73 from the Mo alloys and to x = 0… more

Electronic energy band structure of actinide metals and intermetallics

Description: The behavior of the 5f electrons as the crucial factor in determining the electronic properties of materials containing actinides is discussed. Whether these electrons will be localized or itinerant depends on the relative size of the Coulomb correlation and the near-neighbor interaction (bandwidth) terms. Evidence from optical reflectivity and de Haas-van Alphen measurements which show that the f-states are itinerant in the light actinide metals is examined. The mechanisms by which this occurs… more
