Strong interactions of hyperons. [Summaries of research activities of Brookhaven National Laboratory]

Description: A summary of the strong interaction results obtained with the Yale--FNAL--BNL hyperon beam at the Brookhaven AGS is presented. Differential cross sections are reported for hyperon-proton elastic scattering with samples of 6200 ..sigma../sup -/p events and 67 ..xi../sup -/p events. Also a report is made on a search for hyperon resonances in inelastic scattering. Finally, the prospects for new results on hyperon interactions are reviewed.

Mass and spin formula for quasi-stable high-mass mesons from dual resonance models. [Stability, Veneziaro model]

Description: It is shown that the generalized Veneziano model predicts the existence of quasi-stable high mass mesons with definite masses and spins, which have their lowest-multiplicity decay-modes suppressed. Although the predicted degree of stability is less than experimentally required, proper introduction of internal quantum numbers into the model would likely enhance it. Besides psi (3.1) and psi' (3.7), relatively stable vector mesons of higher masses are expected, with the next one at a mass of appr… more

Radiative decays of the psi' to all-photon final states

Description: A sample of 1.8 x 10/sup 6/ produced psi's collected by the Crystal Ball detector at SPEAR is used to measure branching ratios of selected radiative psi' decays to non-charmonium states which decay into photons. A sample of 2.2 x 10/sup 6/ produced J/psi's is used to measure the same radiative decays from the J/psi. The ratios BR(psi' ..-->.. ..gamma..f)/BR(J/psi ..-->.. ..gamma..f) = 9 +- 3%, BR(psi' ..-->.. ..gamma..theta)/BR(J/psi ..-->.. ..gamma..theta) < 10% - 15%, BR(psi' ..-->.. ..gamma.… more

Possible Dibaryon Resonance in Nucleon--Nucleon Partial Wave Analyses. [Review]

Description: Various arguments suggesting possible existence of dibaryon resonances are reviewed. Possible diproton resonances receive particular attention. The pp data analyses indicate the existence of a diproton resonance in /sup 3/F/sub 3/(J/sup P/ = 3/sup -/) state.

Searches for a Possible Strangeness S = -2 Dibaryon

Description: Since the advent of QCD there has been a strong interest in manifestations of quark degrees of freedom in medium energy nuclear and particle physics. Within the framework of multiquark states the emphasis has centered on states with more than three quarks bound by colour forces rather than by the conventional mesonic forces. Dibaryon systems have played an important role within that framework. One of the most spectacular and exciting predictions is the possible existence, according to the MIT b… more

Measurement of the Ds+ Lifetime

Description: We have observed 99 decays of the charmed strange meson, the D/sub s//sup +/ (formerly called the F/sup +/), into the phi..pi../sup +/ (61) and antiK*/sup 0/K/sup +/ (38) final states in the Fermilab photoproduction experiment E-691. We determine the lifetime to be (.48/sub -.05//sup +.06/ +- .02) x 10/sup -12/s, Using our reported measurement of the D/sup 0/ lifetime, we calculate the ratio tau(D/sub s//sup +/)/tau(D/sup 0/) = (1.10 +- .15 +- .04).

Investigation of resonance states in the glueball-enhanced channel /pi//sup /minus//p /yields/ /phi//phi/n

Description: In this paper we discuss the striking evidence for the g/sub T/(2010), g/sub T//prime/(2300) and g/sub T//prime//prime/(2340) I/sup G/J/sup PC/ = O/sup +/2/sup ++/ resonances which comprise virtually all of the /pi//sup /minus//p /yields/ /phi//phi/n. The complete breakdown of the expected OZI suppression, and the striking differences of these states from conventional states and background in other channels have so far only been successfully explained by assuming they are produced by 1-3 2/sup … more

Crystal Ball evidence for new states

Description: Evidence for three new particles observed in the Crystal Ball detector is presented. The first particle, at 3592 MeV, is seen inclusively in ..gamma.. transitions from psi', and is thus a candidate for eta/sub c/'. The other two, at 1440 and 1640 MeV, are best seen in exclusive decays of psi involving a prompt ..gamma.., and are thus candidates for bound states of two gluons. Detailed reasons are presented to support the contention that these states are distinct from previously observed candida… more

Review of D and B meson decays

Description: The theoretical picture of K and D decays is reviewed in order to explain why large enhancements are not expected in D decays. This expectation is contrasted with the available data on lifetimes and semileptonic branching ratios, which hint at large enhancements but are still ambiguous. Some of the theoretical ideas proposed to explain the enhancement of D/sup 0/, and possibly F/sup +/ nonleptonic decays are discussed. One of these, together with data presented earlier, suggests a way to detect… more

The recent results in ..gamma gamma.. production have evidence for the J/sup PC/ = 1/sup + +/, E/f/sub 1/(1420) and D/f/sub 1/(1285), mesons from the TPC and Mark II collaborations and upper limits for pseudoscalar resonances from the Crystal Ball collaboration. Quark structure of the. lambda. (1405) resonance

Description: The interpretation of the ..lambda..(1405) resonance as a three-quark baryon resonance belonging to the (70,1/sup -/) multiplet is not quite satisfactory. A large spin-orbit splitting is required to explain the mass difference with the ..lambda..(1520) resonance; for none of the other baryon resonances is such a large splitting needed. Also the coupling to the anti KN and the ..pi sigma.. channels is not in agreement with SU(6) predictions. The interpretation of the ..lambda..(1405) resonance a… more

Baryon Resonances Without Quarks: A Chiral Soliton Perspective

Description: In many processes involving low momentum transfer it is fruitful to regard the nucleon as a soliton or ''monopole-like'' configuration of the pion field. In particular, within this framework it is possible to obtain detailed predictions for pion-nucleon scattering amplitudes and for properties of baryon resonances. One can also derive model-independent linear relations between scattering amplitudes, such as ..pi..N and anti KN. A short survey of some recent results is given, including compariso… more

Search for a J/sup PC/ exotic hybid meson

Description: This paper describes an experiment that will search for J/sup PC/ hybrid mesons at the Brookhaven MPS-II facility. Such explicitly exotic states are allowed in QCD, and are predicted to be in an accessible mass region by several models. The experiment will investigate the production of exotics in the reaction ..pi../sup /minus//p ..-->.. ..pi../sup /minus//f/sub 1/p. Expected rates and experimental sensitivity to possible hybrid states are discussed. 3 refs. 3 figs.
