VEPCO network model reconciliation of LANL and MZA model data

Description: The LANL DC load flow model of the VEPCO transmission network shows 210 more substations than the AC load flow model produced by MZA utility Consultants. MZA was requested to determine the source of the difference. The AC load flow model used for this study utilizes 2 standard network algorithms (Decoupled or Newton). The solution time of each is affected by the number of substations. The more substations included, the longer the model will take to solve. In addition, the ability of the algorit… more

Atlas chamber, power flow channel, and diagnostic interface design

Description: The Atlas pulsed-power machine, presently being designed at Los Alamos, will deliver a pulse of {approximately} 45 MA, in 4--5 {micro}sec, with energies of up to 6 MJ (from a bank of 36 MJ maximum) to a load assembly, located in vacuum. Design considerations for the vacuum vessel, power flow channel from the vessel inward, are presented. In contrast to Sandia`s PBFA II-Z, where 20 MA currents and 2--2.5 MJ of energy are delivered to ({approximately} 15 mg) loads in {approximately} 100 nsec, the… more

Harmonic effects of solar geomagnetically induced currents on the electrical distribution system in nuclear power plants

Description: Most previous analysis on the effects of geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) on electric utility systems has steady-state phenomena, with the main interest in the generator step-up transformer and the off-site power system. This paper begins to investigate the possible effects that a GIC event might have on the power plant itself, by examining the harmonic distortion that could exist at various voltage levels in the on-site distribution system.

The Integration of Renewable Energy Sources into Electric Power Distribution Systems

Description: Renewable energy technologies such as photovoltaic, solar thermal electricity, and wind turbine power are environmentally beneficial sources of electric power generation. The integration of renewable energy sources into electric power distribution systems can provide additional economic benefits because of a reduction in the losses associated with transmission and distribution lines. Benefits associated with the deferment of transmission and distribution investment may also be possible for case… more

Maintaining electric power system performance: Preparing for the year 2020: Research needs

Description: The US electric power delivery system will undergo dramatic changes between now and the year 2020. Without an aggressive research and development (R&D) program to develop and integrate new technologies, a substantial mismatch could develop between the system`s performance and the public`s expectations for a stable, reliable source of energy. This report provides a perspective on the future US electrical power delivery system and outlines the major issues for R&D support that will be required to… more

Development of a composite-reinforced aluminum conductor

Description: Fact sheet written for the Inventions and Innovation Program about a new composite-reinforced aluminum conductor for utility transmission and distribution. The millions of people affected by a blackout in the western US, Canada, and parts of Mexico in July 1996 had no idea the power outage was caused by overloaded transmission lines sagging low enough to touch trees. Millions of New Englanders affected by power outages during the 1997--98 winter probably weren't aware that accumulations of ice … more

The IEEE Grid Interconnection Standard: How Will it Affect Wind Power?

Description: In December 1998, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) began writing a standard for the interconnection of distributed resources with electric power systems. This standard will prescribe technical requirements for the interconnection of distributed resources that are connected to primary or secondary voltages in electric distribution systems. It is expected to play a significant role in facilitating a new, emerging market for small, distributed, primarily gas-fired electr… more

Proposed Columbia Wind Farm No. 1 : Final Environmental Impact Statement, Joint NEPA/SEPA.

Description: CARES proposes to construct and operate the 25 megawatt Columbia Wind Farm No. 1 (Project) in the Columbia Hills area of Klickitat County, Washington known as Juniper Point. Wind is not a constant resource and based on the site wind measurement data, it is estimated that the Project would generate approximately 7 average annual MWs of electricity. BPA proposes to purchase the electricity generated by the Project. CARES would execute a contractual agreement with a wind developer, to install appr… more

Type B investigation of electrical fault in 351 Substation, December 4, 1994

Description: On December 4, 1994, at 2132:10 hours, an electrical failure of a cable-tapping splice resulted in a fire in the 300 Area of the DOE Hanford Site. The fire occurred in the yard of Substation 351 in electrical Vault R122V, where the cable-tapping splice was located. The fire incinerated all cables passing to and through the vault causing them to fail. The failure of the cables resulted in a power outage to twenty customers in the 300 Area. The vault was electrically isolated, and power was resto… more

Electric utility industry experience with geomagnetic disturbances

Description: A geomagnetic disturbance (GMD) by its nature occurs globally and almost simultaneously. Severe geomagnetic storms cause problems for electric power systems. The vulnerability of electric power systems to such events has apparently increased during the last 10 to 20 years because power system transmission lines have become more interconnected and have increased in length and because power systems are now operated closer to their limits than in the past. In this report, the experience of electri… more
