Aspects of strangeness

Description: We review various aspects of strangeness production in relativistic heavy ion collisions from AGS to CERN energies. The experimental data are briefly summarized and various possible theoretical interpretations of these data are evaluated, such as quark-gluon- plasma (QGP), hadron gas (HG) thermal models, or event generators (cascade models). Some comments on the production of strange clusters are offered.

The perturbative resummed series for top production

Description: Our calculation of the total cross section for inclusive production of t{bar t} pairs in hadron collisions is summarized. Principal ingredient of this calculation is resummation of the universal leading-logarithm effect of gluon radiation to all orders in the quantum chromodynamics coupling strength, restricted to the region of phase space that is manifestly perturbative. We present predictions of the physical cross section as a function of top quark mass in proton-antiproton reactions at centeā€¦ more

Phenomenological implications of low energy supersymmetry breaking

Description: The experimental signatures for low energy supersymmetry breaking are presented. The lightest standard model superpartner is unstable and decays to its partner plus a Goldstino, G. For a supersymmetry breaking scale below a few 1,000 TeV this decay can take place within a detector, leading to very distinctive signatures. If a neutralino is the lightest standard model superpartner it decays by {chi}{sub 1}{sup 0} {r_arrow} {gamma} + G, and if kinematically accessible by {chi}{sub 1}{sup 0} {r_arā€¦ more

Process Dependent Sivers Function and Implication for Single Spin Asymmetry in Inclusive Hadron Production

Description: We study the single transverse spin asymmetries in the single inclusive particle production within the framework of the generalized parton model (GPM). By carefully analyzing the initial- and final-state interactions, we include the process-dependence of the Sivers functions into the GPM formalism. The modified GPM formalism has a close connection with the collinear twist-3 approach. Within the new formalism, we make predictions for inclusive {pi}{sup 0} and direct photon productions at RHIC enā€¦ more

Clumping Effects on Non-Thermal Particle Spectra in Massive Star Systems

Description: Observational evidence exists that winds of massive stars are clumped. Many massive star systems are known as non-thermal particle production sites, as indicated by their synchrotron emission in the radio band. As a consequence they are also considered as candidate sites for non-thermal high-energy photon production up to gamma-ray energies. The present work considers the effects of wind clumpiness expected on the emitting relativistic particle spectrum in colliding wind systems, built up from ā€¦ more

Time Structure of Particle Production in the MERIT High-Power Target Experiment

Description: The MERIT experiment is a proof-of-principle test of a target system for high power proton beam to be used as front-end for a neutrino factory complex or amuon collider. The experiment took data in autumn 2007 with the fast extracted beam from the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS) to a maximum intensity of about 30 x 10{sup 12} protons per pulse. We report results from the portion of the MERIT experiment in which separated beam pulses were delivered to a free mercury jet target with time intervals bā€¦ more

A Study of the Average Multiplicity and Multiplicity Distributions in Hadron-Nucleus Collisions at High Energies

Description: In a simple counter experiment requiring about 40 hours of data taking time we propose to study the detailed shape of the multiplicity distribution for larger values of n and the average charged particle multiplicity in hadron-nucleus collisions at 100 and 200 Gev. The results of the experiment should be a valuable input for ccmparison with theoretical models, in particular they should provide a sensitive test ot whether multipartlcle production in hadron-nucleon collisions proceeds through a oā€¦ more

Exotic physics: search for long-lived doubly-charged higgs bosons in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96 tev

Description: We present a search for long-lived doubly-charged Higgs bosons (H{sup {+-}{+-}}), with signatures of high ionization energy loss and muon-like penetration. We use 292 pb{sup -1} of data collected in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. Observing no evidence of long-lived doubly-charged particle production, we exclude H{sub L}{sup {+-}{+-}} and H{sub R}{sup {+-}{+-}} bosons with masses below 133 GeV/c{sup 2} and 109 GeV/c{sup 2}, respectivā€¦ more

Inclusive dimuon and b-quark production cross sections in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV

Description: We report on a preliminary measurement of the inclusive dimuon cross section in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. From these results, we extract the inclusive b-quark production cross section for the kinematic range {vert_bar}y{sup b}{vert_bar} < 1.0 and 9 GeV/c < p{sub T}{sup b min} < 25 GeV/c. The difference in azimuthal angle in the transverse plane for dimuon pairs from b{bar b} production is also shown.

Threshold resummation and the total cross section for top quark production

Description: We discuss the motivation for resummation of the effects of initial-state soft gluon radiation, to all orders in the strong coupling strength, for processes in which the near-threshold region in the partonic subenergy is important. We summarize our calculation of the total cross section for top quark production at hadron colliders. Comments are included on the differences between our treatment of subleading logarithmic terms and other methods.

MESON2000 Conference Summary

Description: This short contribution is a lite MESON2000 conference summary. As appropriate for the 600th anniversary of the Jagellonian University, it begins with a brief summary of the last 600 years of European history and its place in hadron physics. Next a ''physicist chirality'' order parameter PC is introduced. When applied to MESON2000 plenary speakers this order parameter illustrates the separation of hadron physicists into disjoint communities. Observation of Au + Au --> Au + Au + rho(0) and Au + Au --> Au* + Au* + rho(0) with STAR

Description: We report the first observation of the reactions Au + Au {yields} Au + Au + {rho}{sup 0} and Au + Au {yields} Au* + Au* + {rho}{sup 0} with the STAR detector. The {rho} are produced at small perpendicular momentum, as expected if they couple coherently to both nuclei. We discuss models of vector meson production and the correlation with nuclear breakup, and present a fundamental test of quantum mechanics that is possible with the system.

Scaling between K{sup +} and proton production in nucleus-nucleus collisions

Description: An empirical scaling involving the production of strange particle K{sup +} and protons has been observed at each rapidity over a large range covered by the E-802 spectrometer in reactions from minimum biased p+Be to central Si+Au at 14.6 A-GeV/c. This scaling has implications for the temporal evolution in nucleus-nucleus collisions.
