Photocharge transport and recombination measurements in amorphous silicon films and solar cells by photoconductive frequency mixing: Annual subcontract report, 20 April 1998--19 April 1999

Description: In the present phase of the program, the transport parameters of a number of amorphous semiconductors prepared by a number of techniques were determined by the photoconductive frequency mixing technique. This technique enabled the authors to determine the drift mobility, md, and the photomixing lifetime, t. The technique is based on the idea of heterodyne detection for photoconductors. When two similarly polarized monochromatic optical beams of slightly different frequencies are incident upon a… more

Chernoff bounds for Class-A noise

Description: The goal is, using a very large passive array, to determine the performance limits of a detector. The signal of interest is narrowband with a Gaussian envelope, and the contaminating noise is multivariate Class-A. Two different multivariate models for the Class A family are presented. One of the models is appropriate for array processing applications. The data is spatially dependent and temporally independent. It is shown, in the spatially independent case, that the Chernoff approximation does … more

Localized wave transport of pulsed beam energy

Description: This paper describes the theory and experiments used to measure a new type of finite beam pulse, the localized wave pulse. The LW pulse is a linear superposition of Gaussian-like basis functions which are constructed from the focus wave modes of Brittingham by means of the modified power spectrum. Experiments to data have made use of three techniques. Synthetic array experiments using acousto-optic measurements were first undertaken to see if the localized wave pulses could be launched by norma… more

Photovoltaics R&D: At the Tipping Point

Description: '' . . . with robust investments in research and market development, the picture changes dramatically.'' Thus, the realigned U.S. Photovoltaic Industry Roadmap highlights R&D as critical to the tipping point that will make solar photovoltaics (PV) significant in the U.S. energy portfolio--part of a well-designed plan that would bring ''2034 expectations'' to reality by 2020. Technology improvement and introduction depend on key, focused, and pertinent research contributions that range from … more

Psychoacoustic evaluation of transmission line audible noise: building attenuation effects, methodology comparison, and field study feasibility. January 1, 1979 to December 31, 1979, Volume 1

Description: Research on evaluating the effects of corona noise from EHV and UHV power transmission lines on humans inside buildings is described. The corona noise from transmission lines was recorded, reproduced for human listeners in a simulated living room and the human response to the noise was measured in the room. It was found that: despite its low sound level, corona noise is somewhat more adversive to people than might be expected on the basis of physical measurements of the sound; corona noise may … more

Terrestrial Solar Spectral Modeling Tools and Applications for Photovoltaic Devices: Preprint

Description: This conference paper describes the variations in terrestrial spectral irradiance on photovoltaic devices can be an important consideration in photovoltaic device design and performance. This paper describes three available atmospheric transmission models, MODTRAN, SMARTS2, and SPCTRAL2. We describe the basics of their operation and performance, and applications in the photovoltaic community. Examples of model input and output data and comparisons between the model results for each under simila… more

Online Particle Size And Concentration Measurement In A Pressurized Coal Combustion Process

Description: The energy industry has to face the demand for highly efficient coal combustion power plants in order to minimize the CO{sub 2} emissions. Efforts are made in new combustion processes, where coal powder is burned at a temperature of 1400 C and a pressure of 16 bars. The hot flue gas is used for a combined gas and steam turbine process. For that reason the flue gas has to be cleaned at the operating temperature and pressure. Limiting values for a secure operation of the turbine, with acceptable … more

Description: This report summarizes an evaluation of the potential use of nondestructive assay (NDA) and nondestructive examination (NDE) technologies on DOE spent nuclear fuel (SNF). It presents the NDA/NDE information necessary for the National Spent Nuclear Fuel Program (NSNFP) and the SNF storage sites to use when defining that role, if any, of NDA/NDE in characterization and certification processes. Note that the potential role for NDA/NDE includes confirmatory testing on a sampling basis and is not re… more

Photocharge Transport and Recombination Measurements in Amorphous Silicon Films and Solar Cells by Photoconductive Frequency Mixing: Annual Subcontract Report, 20 April 1999 - 19 April 2000

Description: This report describes research focused on improving the individual component cells from which the multijunction devices are fabricated. The Mid-Bandgap and Metastability subteam and the Low-Bandgap subteam have the responsibility to develop appropriate materials for the respective layer of the triple-junction solar cell. To this end, it is necessary to characterize the materials that are prepared for the appropriate layer to optimize the devices and to develop an understanding of the conditions… more

Description: This report presents the results of a survey undertaken to identify and characterize current practices for detecting and locating leaks in district heating systems, particular steam systems. Currently used technology and practices are reviewed. In addition, the survey was used to gather information that may be important for the application of acoustic leak detection. A few examples of attempts to locate leaks in steam and hot water pipes by correlation of acoustic signals generated by the leaks… more

On the field determination of effective porosity

Description: Effective porosity of geologic materials is a very important parameter for estimating groundwater travel time and modeling contaminant transport in hydrologic systems. Determination of a representative effective porosity for nonideal systems is a problem still challenging hydrogeologists. In this paper, some of the conventional field geophysical and hydrological methods for estimating effective porosity of geologic materials are reviewed. The limitations and uncertainties associated with each m… more

(In-situ permeability determination and fracture characterization using elastic waves)

Description: Fractures or permeable structures in reservoirs are of great importance in the exploration and production of hydrocarbons. Heterogeneous layers in the formation are also of major significance. A very good example of such heterogeneous and permeable structures is the sand-shale sequence found in sedimentary formations. Full waveform acoustic logging offers an effective tool for characterizing these structures. The current technique most commonly used for modeling borehole acoustic wave propagati… more

Progress Toward an Updated National Solar Radiation Data Base

Description: Progress is reported on an updated National Solar Radiation Database (NSRDB). Focus on this year's work was on preparing a test-year database for evaluating several solar radiation models that could be used to replace the METSTAT model used in the original 1961-1990 NSRDB. That model is no longer compatible with cloud observations reported by the National Weather Service. We have also included a satellite-based model that will increase the spatial resolution of solar radiation for GIS or mappin… more
