ANNUAL SUMMARY RESEARCH REPORT IN CHEMISTRY, JULY 1, 1959-JUNE 30, 1960

Description: Pilot-plant work on ion exchange separation of rare earths indicates that elution with HEDTA on hydrogen-form resin should conserve Sc. Then, after Sc, Lu, Yb, Tm, and Er are diverted to an auxiliary bed, the remaining rare earths can be resolved with EDTA. Data from investigations of rare-earth glycolate solubilities at 20 and 60 deg C are tabulated. In other work, the effectiveness of glycolic acid for fractionally precipitating rare earths was investigated, and the solubilities and compositi… more

RESRAD update

Description: A microcomputer program called RESRAD, which implements a pathway analysis method for radiological risk assessment, was developed by Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) in 1989. This program is used to derive allowable residual concentrations of radionuclides in soil and to predict effective dose equivalents and excess cancer incidence risks incurred by an individual exposed to radioactive materials. Since its development, the RESRAD code has been adopted by DOE in Order 5400.5 for the derivation… more

Status report on LWR spent fuel IAEA leach tests

Description: Spent light-water-reactor (LWR) fuel with an average burnup of 28,000 MWd/MTU was leach-tested at 25/sup 0/C using a modified version of the International Atomic Energy Agency procedure. Leach rates were determined from tests conducted in five different solutions: deionized water, sodium chloride (NaCl), sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO/sub 3/), calcium chloride (CaCl/sub 2/) and Waste Isolation Pilot Plant B brine solutions. Elemental leach rates are reported based on the release of /sup 90/Sr + /sup… more

Entry State Distributions of Discrete Yrast Transitions in Heavy Ion Induced Fusion Reactions

Description: Gamma rays emitted during yrast transitions from compound nuclei are detected with a 4..pi.. multielement gamma ray detector system. Both total pulse height (H) and coincidence fold data (k) are obtained for each event. Results presented include entry state distribution states, k and H projections for some of these distributions, and k and H as a function of spin of the yrast transition. 5 figs. (DWL)

Radiochemical studies for the nuclear chemical mining of copper. [Nuclear explosive fracturing]

Description: Experiments were performed to study the long-term reactions of radioactive materials that would be produced in the nuclear chemical mining of chalcopyrite copper ore. These reactions were carried out in autoclaves for up to eight months at 2.76 MPa of oxygen and 363 K. Dissolving rates of radioactive glass in copper-leaching product solutions were determined by the gamma-counting of solution aliquots. The glass decomposition rate was linear at approximately 1 x 10/sup -10/ kg/s.m/sup 2/. A radi… more

Performance testing of radiobioassay laboratories: In vivo measurements, Final Report

Description: A study of two rounds of in vivo laboratory performance testing was undertaken by Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) to determine the appropriateness of the in vivo performance criteria of draft American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard ANSI N13.3, Performance Criteria for Bioassay.'' The draft standard provides guidance to in vivo counting facilities regarding the sensitivity, precision, and accuracy of measurements for certain categories of commonly assayed radionuclides… more

Measurement of Leaching From Simulated Nuclear-Waste Glass Using Radiotracers

Description: The use of radiotracer spiking as a method of measuring the leaching from simulated nuclear-waste glass is shown to give results comparable with other analytical detection methods. The leaching behavior of /sup 85/Sr, /sup 106/Ru, /sup 133/Ba, /sup 137/Cs, /sup 141/Ce, /sup 152/Eu, and other isotopes is measured for several defense waste glasses. These tests show that radiotracer spiking is a sensitive, multielement technique that can provide leaching data, for actual waste elements, that are d… more

Formation of large target residues in intermediate energy nuclear collisions

Description: We have used radiochemical techniques to measure the yields, angular distributions and velocity spectra of the large (A/sub frag/ greater than or equal to 2/3 A/sub tgt/) target residues from the fragmentation of /sup 197/Au by intermediate energy /sup 12/C, /sup 20/Ne, /sup 32/S, /sup 40/Ar, /sup 84/Kr, and /sup 139/La projectiles. Effects of doping on hybridization gapped materials

Description: Doping studies are presented on three materials exhibiting hybridization gaps: Ce{sub 3}Bi{sub 4}Pt{sub 3}, U{sub 3}Sb{sub 4}Pt{sub 3}, and CeRhSb. In the case of trivalent La, Y, or Lu substituting for Ce or U, there is a suppression of the low temperature gap and an increase in the electronic specific heat, {gamma}. In the case of tetravalent Th substitutions for U there is no change in {gamma} and in the case of tetravalent Zr substitution for Ce in CeRhSb, there is an enhanced semiconductor… more

Quantitative determination of tritium in metals and oxides

Description: Metallic samples are analyzed for tritium by heating the sample at 1225 K in a moist oxygen stream. The volatile products are trapped and the tritium is quantitatively determined by scintillation spectroscopy. The method is used to determine less than 1 ppb of tritium in 100-mg samples of lithium, iron, nickel, cerium, plutonium, and plutonium dioxide. Analysis of 18 cuts of a tritium-zirconium, copper foil standard over a 3-yr period showed a tritium content of 45 ppM and a standard deviation … more

Polymer surface coatings for downconversion of uv radiation and inhibition of photodegradation. Semiannual technical status report, June 1978--January 1979

Description: Cerous (III) polymethacrylate (CPMA), prepared by saponifying a commercial polymethyl methacrylate (PLEXIGLAS) and subsequently neutralized with cerous nitrate, were cast into film from its ethyl acetate solution. CPMA films were subjected to intense uv radiation in order to accelerate the solarization, and they were found to be substantially less susceptible to uv induced degradation than the control which was the film cast from polymethacrylic acid (PMA). A set of CPMA coated PLEXIGLAS films … more
