(Multiple coil pulsed magnetic resonance method to measure the SSC bending magnet multipole moments)

Description: The main emphasis has been to continue development of the high frequency (to 300 MHz) instrumentation, to test the system on a prototype bending magnet, construct the high frequency 32-channel electronics and probes, to seek industrial partners for technology transfer and commercial exploitation, and to do computer simulations for optimizing design parameters. Experience gained from tests made on a dipole magnet at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory was extremely valuable and has resulted in substant… more

Superdeformed nuclei: Shells-vs-liquid drop, pairing-vs-thermal excitations, triaxial-vs-octupole shapes, super-superdeformation

Description: Mechanisms influencing the behavior of superdeformed nuclei are studied using several well established nuclear structure techniques. In particular: pairing, thermal excitation, shell and liquid-drop mechanisms are considered. The effects of quadrupole and hexadecapole (both axial and non-axial), and octupole deformation degrees of freedom are studied. Most of the results are illustrated using the case of /sup 152/Dy nucleus in which a superdeformed band extending up to I approx. 60 h-bar has be… more

Summary of the report of the Senior Committee on Environmental, Safety, and Economic Aspects of Magnetic Fusion Energy

Description: The Senior Committee on Environmental, Safety, and Economic Aspects of Magnetic Fusion Energy (ESECOM) has assessed magnetic fusion energy's prospects for providing energy with economic, environmental, and safety characteristics that would be attractive compared with other energy sources (mainly fission) available in the year 2015 and beyond. ESECOM gives particular attention to the interaction of environmental, safety, and economic characteristics of a variety of magnetic fusion reactors, and … more

Study of limiter damage in a magnetic-field error region of the ZT-40M experiment

Description: A study has been initiated of material plasma interactions on the ZT-40M, Reversed Field Pinch (RFP) plasma physics confinement experiment at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Observations of the evaporation and cracking to TiC coatings, initially placed on an AXF-5Q Graphite mushroom limiter, installed in a high field error region (e.g. an experimental vacuum vessel/liner port) were investigated. A parametric study was performed of the thermal and stress behavior of the limiter and coating mater… more

Fusion Energy Division: Annual progress report, period ending December 31, 1987

Description: The Fusion Program of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a major part of the national fusion program, carries out research in nearly all areas of magnetic fusion. Collaboration among staff from ORNL, Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Inc., private industry, the academic community, and other fusion laboratories, in the United States and abroad, is directed toward the development of fusion as an energy source. This report documents the program's achievements during 1987. Issued as the annual pro… more

Octupole Correlations in the Heavy Elements

Description: The effects of octupole correlations on the nuclear structure of the heavy elements are discussed. The cluster model description of the heavy elements is analyzed. The relevance of 2/sup 6/-pole deformation and fast El transitions to an octupole model is considered. 30 refs., 21 figs., 1 tab.
