Energy planning with solar and conservation: individual values and community choice

Description: Conflict among the priorities of individuals, private sector businesses, and government entities makes the transition to a renewable energy-resource base a difficult one. These conflicts are intensified by the overwhelming number of externalities created by the actions of each of these decision making groups. This paper explores the nature of some of these conflicts and externalities and gives an illustrative example of the benefits to be derived from community energy planning. Community energy… more

Performance Analysis of 11 "Denver Metro" Passive Homes

Description: The Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI) sponsored the Denver Metro Solar Homebuilders Program in cooperation with the Department of Energy and Western SUN. The auxiliary heating requirements for 11 of the passive solar homes were calculated using SLR or SUNCAT-2.4 with a standard set of basic assumptions. The analysis shows that seven of the homes should use less than half as much heating fuel as typical houses recently built in the area; two should use about half; and two should use about t… more

Operational testing of geopressure geothermal wells on the Gulf Coast

Description: A combined-cycle electric-power and pipeline-gas production process is proposed for the exploitation of the geopressured geothermal resource. It allows the operator to shift a portion of the production between the electric grid and the gas pipeline markets. On-site equipment and operating labor requirements are minimized. Thermal efficiencies are based upon sound application of thermodynamic principles and are competitive with large-scale plant operations. The economics presented are based upon… more

The acid precipitation provisions of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments and minorities' energy consumption

Description: In November 1990 Congress passed a comprehensive set of amendments to the Clean Air Act of 1977 with potentially very high compliance costs. The provisions pertaining to control of acid precipitation have been specified with sufficient detail to examine their cost impacts. These provisions will require investment in emissions control technology, mainly by electric utilities. Production costs will increase due to the required investment, resulting in higher electricity prices. This paper examine… more

Residential fuel choice in the Pacific Northwest

Description: In 1983, the Northwest Power Planning Council (Council) issued Model Conservation Standards (MCS) designed to improve the efficiency of electrically heated buildings. Since then, the standards have been adopted by numerous local governments and utilities. The Bonneville Power Administration (Bonneville) has played an active role in marketing residential energy efficiency improvements through the Super Good Cents Program (SGCP) and encouraging the adoption and implementation of the MCS as local … more

Characterization of changes in commercial building structure, equipment, and occupants: End-Use Load and Consumer Assessment Program

Description: Changes in commercial building structure, equipment, and occupants result in changes in building energy use. The frequency and magnitude of those changes have substantial implications for conservation programs and resource planning. For example, changes may shorten the useful lifetime of a conservation measure as well as impact the savings from that measure. This report summarizes the frequency of changes in a commercial building sample that was end-use metered under the End-Use Load and Consum… more

Algorithmic generation of railroad and highway routes

Description: A minimum-time algorithm can be used to generate realistic highway routes between specific origins and destinations. Minimizing distances on links will not produce realistic railroad routes if links bear any resemblance to physical trackage. There are also multiple routes between two points since each carrier has its own philosophy. This paper outlines a systematic method of preparing information such that a computer algorithm can generate realistic routes for single- or multiple-carrier moveme… more

Analysis of ecological effects of geopressured-geothermal resource development. Geopressured-geothermal technical paper No. 4

Description: The activities involved in geopressured-geothermal resource production are identified and their ecological impacts are discussed. The analysis separates those activites that are unique to geopressured-geothermal development from those that also occur in oil and gas and other resource developments. Of the unique activities, those with the greatest potential for serious ecological effect are: (1) accidental brine discharge as a result of a blowout during well drilling; (2) subsidence; (3) fault a… more

MARKAL-MACRO: A linked model for energy-economy analysis

Description: MARKAL-MACRO is an experiment in model linkage for energy and economy analysis. This new tool is intended as an improvement over existing methods for energy strategy assessment. It is designed specifically for estimating the costs and analyzing the technologies proposed for reducing environmental risks such as global climate change or regional air pollution. The greenhouse gas debate illustrates the usefulness of linked energy-economy models. A central issue is the coupling between economic gro… more

Montana geothermal commercialization planning. Semi-annual progress report, January 1, 1979-June 30, 1979

Description: Area development plans were prepared which describe geothermal resources and their potential use on a county or multicounty basis. Development plans for two areas are presented. Cost analyses show that the proximity of the geothermal resource to the end user is the most important criterion in geothermal energy development. Thirteen tentative site-specific plans are being revised. The analysis of institutional factors affecting geothermal development, the outreach, and the state geothermal are d… more

Energy Accounting in Canning Tomato Products

Description: An energy-accounting method was used to determine energy use in various unit operations in canning tomato juice, whole-peeled tomatoes, and tomato paste. Data on steam and electric consumption were obtained from a canning plant with the use of steam flow meters and electric transducers. Unit operations associated with the following equipment were investigated: crushers, hot-break heaters, pulpers, finishers, lye-bath peelers, evaporators, and retorts. Data were analyzed to determine amount of e… more

Energy and materials flows in the iron and steel industry

Description: Past energy-consumption trends and future energy-conservation opportunities are investigated for the nation's iron and steel industry. It is estimated that, in 1980, the industry directly consumed approximately 2.46 x 10/sup 15/ Btu of energy (roughly 3% of total US energy consumption) to produce 111 million tons of raw steel and to ship 84 million tons of steel products. Direct plus indirect consumption is estimated to be about 3.1 x 10/sup 15/ Btu. Of the set of conservation technologies iden… more

Estimation, forecasting, and multiplier-simulation analyses of industrial demand for electricity in the United States

Description: This paper discusses the specification of electricity demand and price equations for manufacturing industries and presents empirical results, based on the data for 16 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) three-digit industries from 1959 to 1976. Performances of estimated coefficients for the equations are evaluated by sample-period simulation tests. The estimated coefficients are then used to forecast electricity demand by industry and also to conduct multiplier-simulation analysis. Prelimi… more

Comparison of two procedures for evaluating the economics of industrial power plants

Description: This report compares two economic-evaluation procedures that are commonly used to evaluate engineering alaternatives for industrial power plants. the procedures are: discounted cash flow analysis (e.g., present worth and internal rate of return) and the revenue requirement method. The former procedure tends to be used by nonregulated, for-profit companies, while the latter is widely accepted in regulated utilities. Each analytical procedure is the same, namely, a conceptually sound assessment o… more

Atmospheric and climatic consequences of a major nuclear war: Results of recent research

Description: During the last several years, comprehensive three-dimensional atmospheric circulation models, including detailed parametric formulations of a wide range of climatologically significant processes, have been applied to study the potential consequences of a major nuclear war involving the injection of smoke which could result from the large-scale fires ignited by such an exchange. For plausible smoke injections during the warm season of the year, all model calculations suggest that a significant … more
