NOVEL INTEGRATING SOLID STATE DETECTOR WITH SEGMENTATION FOR SCANNING TRANSMISSION SOFT X-RAY MICROSCOPY.

Description: An integrating solid state detector with segmentation has been developed that addresses the needs in scanning transmission x-ray microscopy below 1 keV photon energy. The detector is not cooled and can be operated without an entrance window which leads to a total photon detection efficiency close to 100%. The chosen segmentation with 8 independent segments is matched to the geometry of the STXM to maximize image mode flexibility. In the bright field configuration for 1 ms integration time and 5… more

The application of Tiny Triplet Finder (TTF) in BTeV pixel trigger

Description: We describe a track segment recognition scheme called the Tiny Triplet Finder (TTF) that involves grouping of three hits satisfying a constraint such as forming of a straight line. The TTF performs this O(n{sup 3}) function in O(n) time, where n is number of hits in each detector plane. The word ''tiny'' reflects the fact that the FPGA resource usage is small. The number of logic elements needed for the TTF is O(Nlog(N)), where N is the number of bins in the coordinate considered, which for lar… more

Nucleon decay in Soudan 2.

Description: The Soudan 2 detector is used to search for evidence of nucleon decay. Particular emphasis is put on searches for modes with multiple-charged particles in the final state, and for modes suggested by super-symmetric theories.

Atmospheric Neutrinos in the MINOS Far Detector

Description: The phenomenon of flavour oscillations of neutrinos created in the atmosphere was first reported by the Super-Kamiokande collaboration in 1998 and since then has been confirmed by Soudan 2 and MACRO. The MINOS Far Detector is the first magnetized neutrino detector able to study atmospheric neutrino oscillations. Although it was designed to detect neutrinos from the NuMI beam, it provides a unique opportunity to measure the oscillation parameters for neutrinos and anti-neutrinos independently. T… more

The E866 Mark II Bull`s Eye performance and promise

Description: The performance of the E866 Bull`s Eye during the Sept--Oct 1994 gold beam runs is examined. Multipeaked pedestal distributions and direct hits of produced or scattered particles on the PMTs are noted. A simple procedure is described to correct for the observed dependence of BE response on event position. Nonlinearity of the BE Hard Sum compared to the Soft Sum is observed and shown to lead to an artificially good resolution of the former signal which defines the INT trigger. Suggestions are ma… more

Information barriers in the trilateral initiative: Conceptual description

Description: In this paper the authors attempt to define the structure and requirements (both in hardware and software) of an information barrier (IB) for the trilateral initiative. This IB concept will be employed in the radiation measurement instrument(s) used for attribute verification of excess fissile materials offered for international safeguarding. In this paper, they will specifically not attempt to present a list of solutions to the problems, but instead, concentrate on generating a thorough discus… more

Evaluation of selected modern filter media for use in radon/thoron progeny measurements

Description: We tested a number of air sampling filters to determine their suitability for use in radon/thoron progeny measurements. The main test consisted of sampling a radon progeny atmosphere, then measuring the energy spectrum of the alpha particles emerging from the face of the filter. It was found that Millipore AA, long a favorite for this application, is still a good choice. However, this filter is prone to developing electrostatic charge, which can cause the additional collection of {sup 218}Po du… more

Scientific/Technical Report: Improvement in compensation and crystal growth of cadmium zinc telluride radiation detectors

Description: Comparison of actual accomplishments with goals and objectives: (1) Growth of 12 ingots--Washington State University (WSU) more than met this goal for the project by growing 12 final ingots for the year. Nine of the twelve crystal growth ingots resolved gamma radiation at room temperature. The other three ingots where resistivity of {approx} 3 x 10{sup 8} Ohm*cm for CG32a, CG36, and CG42 lower than expected, however none of these were tried with blocking contacts. All ingots were evaluated from… more

The atmospheric neutrino flavor ratio in Soudan 2.

Description: We have measured the flavor ratio of ratios (R) in atmospheric neutrino interactions using a 1.52 kton-year exposure of Soudan 2. We find R = 0.67 {+-} 0.15{sub {minus}0.06}{sup +0.04}. This value is about 2{sigma} from the expected value of 1.0 and is consistent with the anomalous ratios measured by the Kamiokande and IMB experiments. We note that since our acceptance matrix is different from those of the water Cherenkov experiments we would not expect to measure the same value of R, unless R=… more

Effects of P / N in Homogeneity on CDZNTE Radiation Detectors.

Description: Spectrometer grade, room-temperature radiation detectors have been produced on Cd{sub 0.90}Zn{sub 0.10}Te grown by the low-pressure Bridgman technique. Small amount of indium has been used to compensate the uncompensated Cd vacancies for the crystals to be semi-insulating. The properties of the detectors are critically dependent on the amount of excess Te introduced into the growth melts of the Cd{sub 0.90}Zn{sub 0.10}Te crystals and the best detectors are fabricated from crystals grown with 1.… more

Coplanar-grid detector with single-electrode readout

Description: The coplanar-grid technique provides substantial spectral performance improvement over that of conventional detector designs and electronics when applied to gamma-ray detectors based on compound semiconductors. The technique realizes this improvement by measuring the difference between the induced charge signals from two interdigitated coplanar-grid electrodes. By adjusting the relative gain between the two grid signals prior to subtraction, the difference signal can be made less sensitive to t… more
