Acoustic hygrometer. Final report

Description: The water vapor content for air in drier ducts, ovens, furnaces and the like is determined by a measurement of sound speed which is done by measuring the time difference between sound pulses reflected by two reflectors spaced a known distance apart in a guide tube. The transmitter-receiver is located at one end of the tube. The tube has enough number of holes to allow the hot moist air to get into the probe tube. A non-porous tube containing dry air placed in the same duct provides a similar me… more

Estimating the cost of product water conveyance from desalination plants

Description: Methods are presented for estimating the costs of transporting, by pipeline, product water from desalination plants. Cost curves are presented for conveying from 19 to 380 x 10/sup 3/ m/sup 3//day (5 to 100 Mgd) to distances to 80 km (50 mile). Sand is used as the reference soil, and adjustment factors are given for earth, shale, hard rock, and swampland. Costs are given as a function of distance and include pipeline construction, pumping stations, power lines, and electrical switchgear.

Utility Test Results of a 2-Megawatt, 10-Second Reserve-Power System

Description: This report documents the 1996 evaluation by Pacific Gas and Electric Company of an advanced reserve-power system capable of supporting 2 MW of load for 10 seconds. The system, developed under a DOE Cooperative Agreement with AC Battery Corporation of East Troy, Wisconsin, contains battery storage that enables industrial facilities to ''ride through'' momentary outages. The evaluation consisted of tests of system performance using a wide variety of load types and operating conditions. The tests… more

A framework for industrial systems modeling and simulation

Description: To successfully compete in a global market, manufacturing production systems are being forced to reduce time to market and to provide improved responsiveness to changes in market conditions. The organizations that comprise the business links in the production system must constantly make tradeoffs between time and cost in order to achieve a competitive but quick response to consumer demand. Due to the inherent uncertainty of consumer demand, these tradeoffs are, by definition, made with incomple… more

Thin film gold etchant formulation and rinse removal. Final report

Description: The chemistry of gold etchant solutions used in photolithography of thin film networks (TFNs) for hybrid microcircuits was reviewed. The formulation and operating limits were revised to ensure that the initial solution makeup is always within required values for iodine concentration and specific gravity and that the etchant will not be used for an extended period of time. Rinsing procedures for removal of the gold etchant from the TFNs were evaluated. Increasing the rinse time beyond 15 seconds… more

Savannah River Site Environmental Report for 2002

Description: The Savannah River Site (SRS), one of the facilities in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) complex, was constructed during the early 1950s to produce basic materials (such as plutonium-239 and tritium) used in nuclear weapons. The site covers approximately 310 square miles in South Carolina and borders the Savannah River. Various industrial, manufacturing, medical, and farming operations are conducted near the site. Several major industrial and manufacturing facilities are located in the area,… more

Demonstration of real-time monitoring of a photolithographic exposure process using chemical ionization mass spectrometry

Description: Silicon wafers are coated with photoresist and exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light in a laboratory to simulate typical conditions expected in an actual semiconductor manufacturing process tool. Air is drawn through the exposure chamber and analyzed using chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CI/MS). Species that evaporate or outgas from the wafer are thus detected. The purpose of such analyses is to determine the potential of CI/MS as a real-time process monitoring tool. Results demonstrate that… more

Development of Mesoporous Membrane Materials for CO2 Separation: Final Report

Description: The huge emissions of carbon dioxide from fossil fuel fired power plants and industrial plants over the last century have resulted in an increase of the atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration. Climatological modeling work has predicted severe climate disruption as a result of the trapping of heat due to CO{sub 2}. As an attempt to address this global warming effect, DOE has initiated the Vision 21 concept for future power plants. We first synthesized mesoporous aluminosilicates that have high… more
