Polarization as an instrument to explore the phenomenology and dynamics of vector spaces. [6 GeV]

Description: It is shown on the example of an extensive set of polarization data of p-p elastic scattering at 6 GeV/c and t = -0.6 GeV/sup 2//c/sup 2/ that the careful choice of polarization formalisms to simplify the relationship between observables and amplitudes that nevertheless maintains a maximal amount of flexibility can enormously simplify the determination of the amplitudes as well as can yield clues to the dynamics underlying a reaction in atomic, nuclear, or high energy physics. 2 figures, 2 tabl… more

Partial wave analysis of pp. -->. NN. pi. and dibaryon resonances

Description: This talk summarizes results of a partial-wave analysis (PWA) of p up arrow p ..-->.. ..delta../sup + +/n ..-->.. p..pi../sup +/n in the dibaryon resonance region, using comprehensive data on single spin correlations from the effective mass spectrometer at the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron. These results are compared with recent PWA for the bound nucleon final state, pp ..-->.. ..pi../sup +/d, by Bugg. These reactions are closely related, and neither displays Breit-Wigner resonance behavior… more

Resonant production of high-transverse-momentum back-to-back gluon jets in pp collisions. [27 GeV, cross sections, transverse momentum, angular distribution, proposed experiment]

Description: The calorimetric study of two-gluon jets arising from inclusive production of 0/sup - +/, 0/sup + +/, and 2/sup + +/ b anti b states in hadron--hadron collisions was proposed. Cross sections of approx. = 0.2 x 10/sup -33/ cm/sup 2/ (approx. = 3 x 10/sup -33/ cm/sup 2/) are predicted for pp collisions at ..sqrt..s = 27 GeV (60 GeV). Also calculated were the transverse momentum and angular distributions of the jets. 14 references.

Nuclear structure at intermediate energies

Description: The theme that unites the sometimes seemingly disparate experiments undertaken by the Bonner Lab Medium Energy Group is a determination to understand in detail the many facets and manifestations of the strong interaction, that which is now referred to as nonperturbative QCD. Whether we are investigating the question of just what does carry the spin of baryons, or the extent of the validity of the SU(6) wavefunctions for the excited hyperons (as will be measured in their radiative decays in our … more

Mechanism of light-particle emission

Description: A general overview of the field of high-energy nuclear collisions studied from light particle spectra, pions, kaons, lambdas, protons, deuterons, and light composite fragments is given. Specifically, the basic reaction mechanism that determines the main features of particle emission such as the energy and angular distributions, the multiplicity, the production rate, the projectile and target mass dependences, the beam-energy dependences, etc. are discussed. Very general features of high-energy … more

Pion production by target emission

Description: The coherent production of pions in a proton nucleus collision is calculated. The energy region considered is below the nucleon-nucleon threshold so that the entire nucleus must take part in the process. The amplitude for this reaction is broken into two parts, the first part being characterized by initial emission of the pion from the projectile and the second part by initial emission from the target nucleus. It is the second part which is emphasized in this talk. The target nuclei /sup 12/C a… more

Minimum-bias cross sections are discussed. Energy spectra measured at zero degrees and transverse-energy distributions for the pseudorapidity range 2.4 less than or equal to eta less than or equal to 5.5 are shown. Hard hadronic collisions: extrapolation of standard effects

Description: We study hard hadronic collisions for the proton-proton (pp) and the proton-antiproton (p anti p) option in the CERN LEP tunnel. Based on our current knowledge of hard collisions at the present CERN p anti p Collider, and with the help of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), we extrapolate to the next generation of hadron colliders with a centre-of-mass energy E/sub cm/ = 10 to 20 TeV. We estimate various signatures, trigger rates, event topologies, and associated distributions for a variety of old an… more

Measurement of the pp. -->. pi. d spin correlation parameters A/sub SL/ and A/sub LL/ at energies between 500 and 800 MeV

Description: Angular distributions of the spin correlation parameters A/sub SL/ and A/sub LL/ for the inelastic reaction pp..--> pi..d have been measured at pion center-of-mass angles between 40 and 130/sup 0/, at energies of 500, 650, and 800 MeV. Additional measurements of A/sub LL/(THETA) were made at 600, 700, and 750 MeV. The reaction was studied using an incident beam of either longitudinally polarized protons. Both the final state pion and deuteron were detected in a two-armed detector system. The mo… more

Results from a hadron jet experiment at. sqrt. s = 19. 4 and 27. 4 GeV

Description: In Fermilab experiment E609 we have studied the production of high p/sub t/ hadron jets by beams of protons at 200 and 400 GeV/c and pions at 200 GeV/c. Results for the single-jet and di-jet cross sections are given and are compared to QCD predictions. Leading-particle charge ratios from di-jet events are given and compared to QCD-motivated predictions. Evidence is presented concerning a higher twist effect in ..pi..p interactions as predicted by Berger and Brodsky. Preliminary results on high … more

New flavor production in. gamma. ,. mu. ,. nu. , and hadron beams. [Review]

This review concentrates mainly on the production data in ..gamma.., ..mu.., ..nu.., and hadron beams. The heavy flavor searches divide themselves naturally into three categories, each one characterized by its own peculiar advantages and shortcomings; these are summarized briefly. Mesonic and dibaryonic excitations in the. pi. NN system

Description: A ..pi..NN theory, incorporating mesonic and dibaryonic excitation mechanisms, is introduced to give a unified description of NN and ..pi..d reactions. The dibaryonic excitation at short distance is introduced according to current understanding of six quark dynamics. The effect of the 2/sup +/, T = 1 six-quark state on NN and ..pi..d scattering is presented. The implication of the theory in the study of electr… more

Experimental search for W/Z pairs and Higgs bosons at very high energy hadron-hadron colliders

Description: We study, from an experimental point of view, the main ways to detect standard high mass Higgs bosons (from 300 GeV up to about 1 TeV) when they decay into W- and Z-pairs at the SSC. We also consider the corresponding W- and Z/sup 0/-pair continuum which may itself provide interesting physics, and we pay some attention to the case of an intermediate mass charged Higgs decaying into tau..nu../sub tau/ (m/sub H+-/ = 300 GeV). We first explain why and how high energy pp colliders may search for Hi… more
