Conceptual design of electrical balance of plant for advanced battery energy storage facility. Annual report, March 1979. [20-MW, 100 MWh]

Description: Large-scale efforts are in progress to develop advanced batteries for utility energy storage systems. Realization of the full benefits available from those systems requires development, not only of the batteries themselves, but also the ac/dc power converter, the bulk power interconnecting equipment, and the peripheral electric balance of plant equipment that integrate the battery/converter into a properly controlled and protected energy system. This study addresses these overall system aspects… more

HEMP-induced transients in electric power substations

Description: A nuclear detonation in or above the earth's atmosphere produces an intense electromagnetic pulse (EMP). A large portion of the EMP electromagnetic energy is within the RF spectrum. A detonation at high altitudes above 40 km produces an EMP called high-altitude EMP (HEMP). HEMP is a steep-front short duration transient with a rise time on the order of a few nanoseconds which decays to near zero in less than a microsecond. A single high-altitude burst can subject much of the continental United S… more

Description: Five transmission line options and several reactive (voltage support) options are presently being considered as possible solutions to the PSAERP by the Transmission Team. The first two line options would be built on new rights-of way adjacent (as much as possible) to existing corridors. The reactive options would optimize the existing transmission system capability by adding new stations for series capacitors and/or switchgear. The other three line options are rebuilds or upgrades of existing c… more

Impacts of dispersing storage and generation in electric distribution systems. Final report

Description: Small-scale Dispersed Storage and Generation (DSG) connected to the electric-distribution systems provide one alternative to large-scale additions to utility supply and delivery systems. In addition to being generating sources, DSG may also provide benefits to the distribution system by reducing capacity requirements, improving reliability, and lowering losses. This study offers a consistent, unifying methodology for evaluating the dispersion effect of DSG in distribution systems. The evaluatio… more
