Daily results of the initial operation of the Los Alamos salt-gradient solar pond

Description: The results of analysis of the initial data obtained on the Los Alamos National Laboratory salt-gradient solar pond, a 232 m/sup 2/ pond constructed for the primary purpose of studying pond hydrodynamics, are presented. The pond and the data-acquisition system were complete and in full operation by August 14, 1982. By September 21, 1982, the lower convecting zone had reached a temperature of 56/sup 0/C. An energy balance was performed over this period and is presented. Soil conductivity determi… more

Radiation transmission through a composite medium of glass and water

Description: Solar ponds have been shown to be a viable method of collecting solar energy. The most common type of solar pond is the salt gradient solar pond. Interest has also been shown in other types of ponds, such as a membrane stratified solar pond. Another possible alternative is a porous medium solar pond, where a porous medium would be used to stratify the pond. The growing abundance of recycled glass could provide an inexpensive source of material for constructing a light transmitting porous medium… more

Spatial and temporal ecology of oak toads (Bufo quercicus) on a Florida landscape.

Description: ABSTRACT: We used data from 10 years of continuous, concurrent monitoring of oak toads at eight isolated, ephemeral ponds in Florida longleaf pine-wiregrass uplands to address: (1) did weather variables affect movement patterns of oak toads?; (2) did pond hydrology and the condition of surrounding uplands affect pond selection by adults or juvenile recruitment?; (3) were population trends evident?; and (4) did a classical metapopulation model best represent their population ecology? Of 4076 oak… more

Heat Extraction from the ANL Research Salt Gradient Solar Pond

Description: This report documents the design considerations and test results of two heat extraction systems for the ANL Research Salt Gradient Solar Pond (RSGSP). Since operation began in November 1980, the RSGSP has been used to study a wide variety of solar pond phenomena, and the behavior of the RSGSP without heat extraction has been well characterized. Heat extraction equipment was installed in the spring of 1984, with heat extraction experiments conducted the following summer and fall and in the fall … more

Design, Construction, and Initial Operation of the ANL Research Salt-Gradient Solar Pond

Description: The design consideration of a 1/4 acre research salt-gradient solar pond is described. Experience learned during the construction of the solar pond is presented. Initial operation of the pond indicates that the construction of the pond is sound and no leakage has occurred. The pond began to warm up during March of 1981. The maximum pond temperature reached 63 C at the end of July and it is still rising. All signs indicate that the operation of the well instrumented pond will be a success and th… more
