Plutonium Oxide- Plastic Mixtures for Critical Mass Studies

Description: Critical mass experiments to be conducted at HAPO will require dilute and concentrated plutonium solutions. Since very high plutonium concentrations (~2,000 g/l) cannot be attained in pumpable solutions, solid plutonium compounds will be utilized for this phase of the work. Mixtures of plutonium oxide and polyethylene, methyl methacrylate or paraffin compacted in containers have been considers for use in highly-concentrated plutonium systems of known hydrogen to plutonium atomic ratio (H/Pu).

A Combined Distillation-Electrochemical Method for Recovery of Hydrofluoric Acid

Description: Electrodialysis in an ion-exchange membrane cell was shown to be technically feasible for the concentration of an azeotropic mixture of HF and water. A flowsheet is presented for recovery of anhydrous HF by distillation and electrodialysis of the azeotropic residue. In the electrodialysis step, 2.6 kwhr of energy per pound of anhydrous product was consumed, with electricity at 1¢ per kilowatt-hour, the total operating cost of the electrodialysis equipment alone, including amortization, would be… more

Evaluation of self-interaction parameters from binary phase diagrams

Description: The feasibility of calculating Wagner self-interaction parameters from binary phase diagrams was examined. The self-interaction parameters of 22 non-ferrous liquid solutions were calculated utilizing an equation based on the equality of the chemical potentials of a component in two equilibrium phases. Utilization of the equation requires the evaluation of the first and second derivatives of various liquidus and solidus data at infinite dilution of the solute component. Several numerical methods… more

Thermal dissociation behavior and dissociation enthalpies of methane-carbon dioxide mixed hydrates

Description: Replacement of methane with carbon dioxide in hydrate has been proposed as a strategy for geologic sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO{sub 2}) and/or production of methane (CH{sub 4}) from natural hydrate deposits. This replacement strategy requires a better understanding of the thermodynamic characteristics of binary mixtures of CH{sub 4} and CO{sub 2} hydrate (CH{sub 4}-CO{sub 2} mixed hydrates), as well as thermophysical property changes during gas exchange. This study explores the thermal d… more

Comments on "Solubility and Dissolution Thermodynamic Data of Cefpiramide in Pure Solvents and Binary Solvents"

Description: Abstract: Errors are found in the mathematical correlation based on the combined Jouyban-Acree and Modified Apelblat model for describing the variation in the mole fraction solubility of cefpiramide with temperature and solvent composition for the binary aqueous-ethanol solvent system. The equation coefficents given by Tang and coworkers, when substituted into the model equation, do not yield the authors' calculated mole fraction solubilities of cefpiramide.

The Analysis of Thin Wires Using Higher-Order Elements and Basis Functions

Description: Thin wire analysis was applied to curved wire segments in [1], but a special procedure was needed to evaluate the self and near-self terms. The procedure involved associating the singular behavior with a straight segment tangent to the curved source segment, permitting use of algorithms for straight wires. Recently, a procedure that avoids the singularity extraction for straight wires was presented in [2-4]. In this paper, the approach in [4] is applied to curved (or higher-order) wires using a… more

A Method for Determining the Composition of Methanol-Trimethyl Borate Mixtures

Description: A study of mixtures of pure methanol and trimethyl borate showed that the composition can be accurately obtained by a simple density determination. The refractive-index determination gives the composition with much less accuracy. The potentiometric titration of boric acid is also discussed.

Determination of Viscosity of Exhaust-Gas Mixtures at Elevated Temperatures

Description: Note presenting the viscosities of five samples of dry-exhaust-gas mixtures at approximately atmospheric pressure and at temperatures from 0 to 1100 degrees Celsius. A method of analysis and correlation proposed by Sutherland has been applied to the data and equations were derived therefrom for representing the results.

Effect of Concentration on Ignition Delays for Various Fuel-Oxygen-Nitrogen Mixtures at Elevated Temperatures

Description: Note presenting measurements of ignition delays for mixtures of ethane, n-butane, isobutane, hydrogen, or propane with oxygen and nitrogen using a flow system with two experimental procedures. Delays were measured over a range of temperatures for each gas. Results regarding a comparison among fuels and effect of experimental procedure on absolute values of ignition delay are provided.
