Model to predict the radiological consequences of transportation of radioactive material through an urban environment

Description: A model has been developed which predicts the radiological consequences of the transportation of radioactive material in and around urban environments. This discussion of the model includes discussion of the following general topics: health effects from radiation exposure, urban area characterization, computation of dose resulting from normal transportation, computation of dose resulting from vehicular accidents or sabotage, and preliminary results and conclusions.

Near term hybrid passenger vehicle development program. Phase I. Appendices A and B. Final report

Description: In this report vehicle use patterns or missions are defined and studied. The three most promising missions were found to be: all-purpose city driving which has the maximum potential market penetration; commuting which requires mainly a two-passenger car; and family and civic business driving which have minimal range requirements. The mission selection process was based principally on an analysis of the travel patterns found in the Nationwide Transportation Survey and on the Los Angeles and Wash… more

Trends in atmospheric particulate concentrations at a location in the northeast United States. [Rural area near New York City]

Description: Real-time measurements of total particulate concentrations have been made continuously during the past two years to provide aerometric background information for correlation with meteorological parameters. The measurements were made to determine short and long time variations, frequency distributions, episodical information, effects on solar radiation and spectral analysis to show important time histories in a rural area near the New York City metropolitan region. This study provides useful bac… more

Influence of civil defense on strategic countervalue fatalities

Description: Two modeling studies were conducted to simulate the effect of fallout shelters on the outcome of a massive countervalue nuclear exchange between the Soviet Union and the United States. One was to determine the number of nuclear weapons required to mount an effective fallout attack against a country with dispersed population; the other was to determine the number of expected US fatalities resulting from a countervalue attack against US urban population centers. The results of these studies indic… more

District heating and cooling: a 28-city assessment

Description: Findings of a project that assessed the potential for construction of district heating and cooling (DHC) systems in 28 US cities are presented. The project sought to determine whether DHC could promote local community and economic development. In the preliminary assessment, 17 of the cities identified up to 23 projects that could be built within three to five years. Most of these projects would rely on nonscarce heat sources such as refuse or geothermal energy, and to improve financial feasibil… more

Analysis of large urban fires

Description: Fires in urban areas caused by a nuclear burst are analyzed as a first step towards determining their smoke-generation chacteristics, which may have grave implications for global-scale climatic consequences. A chain of events and their component processes which would follow a nuclear attack are described. A numerical code is currently being developed to calculate ultimately the smoke production rate for a given attack scenario. Available models for most of the processes are incorporated into th… more

Chemical analysis of sediment cores from the East Waterway (Everett, Washington). Final report

Description: Chemical data for two sediment cores from the East Waterway of Everett, Washington, indicate that 20 to 30 cm of contaminated sediments are accumulating per year. The concentrations of several heavy metals (Pb, Hg and Cu), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and petroleum hydrocarbons increase with depth in the sediments suggesting contamination of this waterway has varied by as much as a factor of 10 during the last 5 years. 7 references, 9 figures, 12 tables.

Trenton ICES: demonstration of a grid-connected integrated community energy system. Phase II. Volumes 1 and 2. Preliminary design of ICES system and analysis of community ownership

Description: Preliminary design and evaluation for the system has been carried out. The findings of this study are: (1) it is technically feasible, utilizing commercially available hardware; (2) under utility ownership and operation, it will not be economically competitive with conventional alternatives for heating and cooling buildings (analysis contained in companion report under separate cover); (3) under utility ownership and operation, no restrictions have been identified that would prevent the project… more

Environmental overview of geothermal development: the Geysers-Calistoga KGRA. Volume 3. Noise

Description: Noise from geothermal resource development at The Geysers-Calistoga Known Geothermal Resource Area (KGRA) will cause community annoyance unless noise-level standards are set and adhered to. Venting of steam is the loudest source of noise and can reach 100 to 125 dBA at 20 to 100 ft; most of the other noise sources fall below 100 dBA and are those usually associated with construction and industrial projects. Enough data exist for assessment and decision making, but it is scattered and must be co… more

US areal wind resource estimates considering environmental and land-use exclusions

Description: In support of the US Department of Energy's National Energy Strategy initiative, estimates of the land area with various levels of wind energy resource have been developed for each state in the contiguous United States. The estimates are based on published wind resource data and account for the exclusion of some land owing to environmental of land-use considerations. These exclusions assume that 100% of the environmentally sensitive land and various percentages of land designated as urban, agri… more

Regional wind-field study in complex terrain during summer sea-breeze conditions

Description: A regional-scale data base, consisting of wind and temperature data for June and July of 1977, was developed for the greater San Francisco Bay Area and eastward to the Central Valley. Continuous meteorological measurements were made in the area of a windy pass (Patterson Pass) 3 km east of Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. This area was chosen because of its complex terrain and importance as a downwind topographic feature affecting the dispersal of possible accidental atmospheric releases from the… more

Land use and environmental impacts of decentralized solar energy use

Description: The physical, spatial and land-use impacts of decentralized solar technologies applied at the community level by the year 2000 are examined. The results of the study are intended to provide a basis for evaluating the way in which a shift toward reliance on decentralized energy technologies may eventually alter community form. Six land-use types representative of those found in most US cities are analyzed according to solar penetration levels identified in the maximum solar scenario for the year… more

Energy planning with solar and conservation: individual values and community choice

Description: Conflict among the priorities of individuals, private sector businesses, and government entities makes the transition to a renewable energy-resource base a difficult one. These conflicts are intensified by the overwhelming number of externalities created by the actions of each of these decision making groups. This paper explores the nature of some of these conflicts and externalities and gives an illustrative example of the benefits to be derived from community energy planning. Community energy… more

Comparison of geothermal, solar, and conventional space heating costs in the United States

Description: The costs of residential heating throughout the United States using conventional, solar, and geothermal energy were determined under current and projected conditions. These costs are very sensitive to location - being dependent on the local prices of conventional energy supplies, local solar insolation, climate, and the proximity and temperature of potential geothermal resources. Geothermal district heating systems will become economically feasible in most urban centers north of a line extendin… more
