Pretreatment of neutralized cladding removal waste (NCRW) sludge - results of FY 1991 studies

Description: Neutralized cladding removal waste (NCRW) sludge is a unique waste material that is stored in two underground double-shell tanks at the U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford Site. The NCRW sludge was formed by neutralization of the solution resulting from the chemical decladding of Zircaloy-clad metallic uranium fuel by the Zirflex process. The sludge consists of zirconium and sodium hydroxides and fluorides, with small amounts of potassium, nitrite, and other nonradioactive materials. The sludge… more

Coal demonstration plants. Quarterly report, April--June 1977

Description: The objective of DOE's demonstration plant program is to establish the technical and financial feasibility of coal conversion technologies proven during pilot plant testing. Demonstration plants will minimize the technical and economic risks of commercialization by providing a near commercial size plant for testing and production. Thus, DOE is sponsoring the development of a series of demonstration plants, each of which will be a smaller version of commercial plants envisioned for the 1980's. T… more

Constant extension rate testing of Type 304L stainless steel in simulated waste tank environments. [Type 304L stainless steel]

Description: New tanks for storage of low level radioactive wastes will be constructed at the Savannah River Site (SRS) of AISI Type 304L stainless steel (304L). The presence of chlorides and fluorides in the wastes may induce Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) in 304L. Constant Extension Rate Tests (CERT) were performed to determine the susceptibility of 304L to SCC in simulated wastes. In five of the six tests conducted thus far 304L was not susceptible to SCC in the simulated waste environments. Conflicting… more

Benchmarking BLT: A Computer Code for LLW Source Term Evaluation

Description: A computer code, called BLT, has been specially developed for calculating the release of radionuclides as a function of time (source term) from low-level waste disposal facilities. To provide a reasonable level of confidence in the model predictions, the BLT code was benchmarked against real experimental data. In this study, the release curves for nitrate, technetium-99 and tritium from the saltstone lysimeters operated by Savannah River Laboratory were used. The model results are observed to b… more

Radioactive particle resuspension research experiments on the Hanford Reservation

Description: Experiments were conducted from 1972 to 1975 at several Hanford Reservation study sites to determine whether radioactive particles from these sites were resuspended and transported by wind and to determine, if possible, any interrelationships between wind speed, direction, airborne soil, and levels of radioactivity on airborne particles. Samples of airborne particles were collected with high volume air samplers and cascade particle impactors using both upwind and downwind air sampling towers. M… more

Growth of IGSC cracks in Type 304 stainless steel at 100 degrees C in an aqueous environment

Description: Intergranular stress corrosion (IGSC) cracking has been observed in the primary coolant system of the Savannah River Site Reactors. There have been several cases during the over one hundred reactor-years of plant operating experience when IGSC cracks have grown through-wall and minor leaks have occurred. Approximately 7% of the heat affected zones of pipe-to-pipe butt welds show indications of IGSC cracking during ultrasonic testing (UT). Other piping and component areas, sensitized by flame wa… more
