Examinations of Chemical Resistance and Thermal Behaviour of Ceramic Filter Materials for Hot-Gas Cleaning

Description: Increasing prosperity and the steady growth of the world population lead to a strongly rising energy requirement. Therefore the saving of the available resources as well as the limitation of CO{sub 2}-emission are the main reasons for developing highly efficient power stations. The use of combined cycle technology for advanced coal fired power plants allow a significantly higher conversion efficiency than it is possible in an only steam power plant. In order to increase the gas turbine inlet te… more

Low temperature SO sub 2 removal with solid sorbents in a Circulating Fluidized Bed Absorber

Description: The construction of a bench-scale Circulating Fluidized Bed Absorber (CFBA) unit has been completed, and system calibrations have already been performed. In addition, as a novel method injecting water into CFBA, a toroidal-shaped nozzle was designed and installed in a bed reactor to increase the wetting efficiency of solid sorbents. The experimental set up for low temperature SO{sub 2} removal consists of a bed reactor of 3 inches in diameter and 10 feet in length, two high efficiency cyclones … more

Kinetics and mechanism of desulfurization and denitrogenation of coal-derived liquids. Quarterly report, June 20, 1976--September 19, 1976

Description: Two high-pressure flow microreactors are functioning efficiently in studies of dibenzothiophene hydrodesulfurization and quinoline hydrodenitrogenation. Assembly of a third microreactor is scheduled for completion in about three months. Dibenzothiophene hydrodesulfurization at conditions such as 1,000 psig and 300-350/sup 0/C takes place in the absence of mass transfer influence. The rate is surprisingly high, requiring temperatures of 300/sup 0/C or less for determination of differential conve… more

Removal of gasoline vapors from air streams by biofiltration

Description: Research was performed to develop a biofilter for the biodegradation of gasoline vapors. The overall goal of this effort was to provide information necessary for the design, construction, and operation of a commercial gasoline vapor biofilter. Experimental results indicated that relatively high amounts of gasoline vapor adsorption occur during initial exposure of the biofilter bed medium to gasoline vapors. Biological removal occurs over a 22 to 40[degrees]C temperature range with removal being… more

National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants Application for Approval to Stabilize the 105N Basin

Description: The 105N Basin (basin) Stabilization will place the basin in a radiologically and environmentally safe condition so that it can be decommissioned at a later date. The basin stabilization objectives are to inspect for Special Nuclear Material (SNM) (i.e., fuel assemblies and fuel pieces), remove the water from the basin and associated pits, and stabilize the basin surface. The stabilization will involve removal of basin hardware, removal of basin sediments, draining of basin water, and cleaning … more

Termination of light-water reactor core-melt accidents with a chemical core catcher: the core-melt source reduction system (COMSORS)

Description: The Core-Melt Source Reduction System (COMSORS) is a new approach to terminate light-water reactor core melt accidents and ensure containment integrity. A special dissolution glass is placed under the reactor vessel. If core debris is released onto the glass, the glass melts and the debris dissolves into the molten glass, thus creating a homogeneous molten glass. The molten glass, with dissolved core debris, spreads into a wide pool, distributing the heat for removal by radiation to the reactor… more

Kinetics of Mn-based sorbents for hot coal gas desulfurization: Quarterly progress report, December 15, 1994--March 15, 1995. Task 2 -- Exploratory experimental studies: Single pellet tests; Rate mechanism analysis

Description: In earlier studies, zinc ferrite and zinc titanate were developed as regenerable sorbents capable of removing hydrogen sulfide from hot fuel gases originating from coal gasification. Manganese ore as well as manganese carbonate, precipitated from aqueous solutions, combined with alumina to form indurated pellets hold promise of being a highly-effective, inexpensive, regenerable sorbent for hot fuel gases. Although the thermodynamics for sulfur removal by manganese predicts somewhat higher hydro… more

Eliminating the possibility at Chernobyl 4 of recriticality with positive feedback

Description: We have recently published an article in which we discuss means by which plutonium and other fissile material stored underground could reach criticality with positive feedback and therefore explosive potential. The Chernobyl rubble involving hundreds of tons of material is similar in some respects to the systems analyzed in the paper, and the practices there to control criticality may well increase the probability of a second event at Chernobyl 4. This paper explores the Chernobyl situation and… more

Perceptions of Restorative Practices by Male Students of Color in Middle School

Description: Zero-tolerance discipline policies have been in use in U.S. schools for almost 25 years. Since their enactment in the 1990s, researchers have found that zero tolerance disciplinary policies and practices can cause students to enter the school-to-prison pipeline. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand the perceptions of middle-school male students of color regarding the discipline process on a campus that supplemented zero-tolerance discipline with restorative practices (… more

High temperature membranes for H{sub 2}S and SO{sub 2} separations. Quarterly progress report, July 1, 1992--September 30, 1992

Description: High temperature membrane separation techniques have been applied to gas mixtures involved in coal utilization. For coal gasification, H{sub 2}S has been removed from the syn-gas stream, split into hydrogen which enriches the syn-gas, and sulfur which can be condensed from an inert gas sweep stream. For coal combustion, SO{sub 2} has been separated from the flue gas, with concentrated SO{sub 3} produced as a by-product. Both processes appear economically viable but each requires fundamental imp… more

Video requirements plan for the HMT equipment removal system

Description: This document is the plan defining the video coverage requirements for the equipment removal event of the Hydrogen Mitigation Test (HMT) mixer pump currently installed in high level nuclear waste storage Tank 241-SY-101. When the mixer pump fails the removal and installation of a spare pump will be a time critical event. Since the success of the HMT mixer pump has resolved the DOE safety issue it is absolutely essential that mixing be restored to the tank in a short as time possible. Therefore,… more

Direct chlorination process for geothermal power plant off-gas - hydrogen sulfide abatement

Description: The Direct Chlorination Process removes hydrogen sulfide from geothermal off-gases by reacting hydrogen sulfide with chlorine in the gas phase. Hydrogen chloride and elemental sulfur are formed by this reaction. The Direct Chlorination Process has been successfully demonstrated by an on-site operation of a pilot plant at the 3 M We HPG-A geothermal power plant in the Puna District on the island of Hawaii. Over 99.5 percent hydrogen sulfide removal was achieved in a single reaction stage. Chlori… more
