Research on stable, high-efficiency, large-area amorphous silicon based modules -- Task B

Description: This report documents progress in developing a stable, high- efficiency, four-terminal hybrid tandem module. The module consists of a semi-transparent, thin-film silicon:hydrogen alloy (TFS) top circuit and a copper indium diselenide (CuInSe{sub 2}) bottom circuit. Film deposition and patterning processes were successfully extended to 0.4-m{sup 2} substrates. A 33.2-W (8.4% efficient) module with a 3970-cm{sup 2} aperture area and a white back reflector was demonstrated; without the back reflec… more

Spectroscopic investigations of small-molecule interactions on metal oxide surfaces. Final report, September 1, 1978-December 31, 1981

Description: Angle integrated and angle resolved ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS and ARPES) and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) have been performed on the low index single crystal surfaces of zinc oxide. Study of CO/ZnO shows that the mode of binding is dominated by 5sigma donation from the carbon end of the molecule to the unsaturated surface zinc ion with little ..pi.. backbonding to the CO2..pi..* orbital. This electronic structure is verified by a HREELS study. The… more

Development and testing of regenerable hot-coal-gas desulfurization sorbents

Description: Investigations over several years at the Morgantown Energy Technology Center have been concerned with the development of a regenerable metal oxide desulfurization sorbent which would function on hot coal-derived fuel gas. In the latest phase of testing, a combination of zinc oxide with iron oxide as zinc ferrite has produced a sorbent which has demonstrated regenerability and capability of removing sulfur from simulated hot coal gas to a level of 1 to 10 ppM by volume. The principal finding at … more

(Investigation of low-cost solar cells based on Cu/sub 2/O). Third quarterly progress report, November 1, 1979-January 31, 1980

Description: Efforts this quarter concentrated on completion and check-out of the MBE system, deposition of ZnS films, analysis of the internal photoresponse for Cu-Cu/sub 2/O cells, and fabrication and characterization of Cu-Cu/sub 2/O solar cells. In-doped ZnS films with very good optical quality and finite conductivity were obtained by co-depositing In and ZnS. Analysis of the internal photoresponse indicated that minority carrier diffusion lengths on the order of 10 ..mu..m are being achieved with the p… more

Hot gas cleanup for molten carbonate fuel cells. A zinc oxide reactor model, Final report

Description: Utilization of coal gasifiers to power MCFC requires a cleanup system to remove sulfur and particulates. Of the two near term options available for desulfurization of gasifier effluent, namely low temperature cleanup utilizing absorber/stripper technology, and hot gas cleanup utilizing metal oxides, there is a clear advantage to using hot gas cleanup. Since the MCFC will operate at 1200/sup 0/F, and the gasifier effluent could be between 1200 to 1900/sup 0/F, a hot gas cleanup system will requi… more

Investigation of solar cells based on Cu/sub 2/O. Quarterly progress report, May 1-July 31, 1979

Description: Efforts during this quarter have involved a detailed study of photocurrent from Cu/Cu/sub 2/O Schottky barriers, development of a MBE system, and studies of reactively sputtered ZnO films. Optical constants were determined for Cu films as a function of film thickness and utilized to determine optimum AR coating thicknesses to maximize the photocurrent from Cu/Cu/sub 2/O cells. Using results of these analyses, an AM1 photocurrent of 7.4 mA/cm/sup 2/ has been obtained. Fabrication and purchasing … more

A Kinetic Study of Methanol Synthesis in a Slurry Reactor Using a CuO/ZnO/Al sub 2 O sub 3 Catalyst

Description: A kinetic model that describes the methanol production rate over a CuO/ZnO/AI{sub 2}0{sub 3} catalyst (United Catalyst L-951) at typical industrial operating conditions is developed using a slurry reactor. Different experiments are conducted in which the H{sub 2}/(CO+CO{sub 2}) ratio is equal to 2, 1, and 0.5, respectively, while the CO/CO{sub 2} ratio is held constant at 9. At each H{sub 2}/(CO+CO{sub 2}) ratio the space velocity is set at four different values in the range of 3000-13,000 1/hr… more

Studies involving high temperature desulfurization/regeneration reactions of metal oxides for fuel cell development. Final report

Description: Research conducted at Giner, Inc. during 1981 to 1983 under the present contract has been a continuation of the investigation of a high temperature regenerable desulfurization process capable of reducing the sulfur content in coal gases from 200 ppM to 1 ppM. The overall objective has been the integration of a coal gasifier with a molten carbonate fuel cell, which requires that the sulfur content be below 1 ppM. Commercially available low temperature processes incur an excessive energy penalty.… more

Description: We are studying model catalysts in which the active phase is deposited onto flat oxide substrates in order to understand how a catalyst is affected by its support. We have examined the following growth and stability of titania overlayers which had been vapor deposited onto a Rh foil; the growth of Pt films on ZnO(0001)Zn and O(0001)O and compared the results to those obtained for Pt on {alpha}-Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}(0001). Samples were prepared by vapor deposition of Pt onto flat substrates in ultra… more

Annual report on the Characterization on the high-level waste glasses.

Description: The waste compo itions PW-7c and PW-9 were defined and glass development was completed. Major variations in major oxide concentration would not grossly affect the leach rates of the glass. Impact and strength tests on nonradioactive glass showed that the waste glasses produced slightly less fine particulate than commercial glass. Waste glass had 60% of the strength of the soda-lime glass. A water-quench reduced thermal conductivity about 20%, and a 24-h hold at devitrification temperatures did … more

Description: Frequency and voltage dependent capacitance measurements of ZnO/Zn/sub 3/P/sub 2/ heterojunctions have been made and the results interpreted according to a model which considers the total capacitance arising from contributions due to the depletion layer capacitance, interface charges and a dipole charge. The capacitance of the devices is anomalously high at low frequencies but agrees well with the value calculated from the bulk carrier density at 1 MHz. The data suggest a significant contributi… more
