Conversion of the rocket propellant UDMH to a reagent useful in vicarious nucleophilic substitution reactions

Description: The objective of our program is to develop novel, innovative solutions for the disposal of surplus energetic materials resulting from the demilitarization of conventional and nuclear munitions. In this report we describe the use of surplus propellant (UDMH) and explosives (TNT, Explosive D) as chemical precursors for higher value products. The conversion of UDMH to 1,1,1-trimethylhydrazinium iodide (TMHI) provides a new aminating reagent for use in Vicarious Nucleophilic Substitution (VNS) reac… more

Testing and transition: the final days of system development

Description: As part of existing tasking, the Military Traffic Management Command (MTMC) requested that Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) assist with writing test scenarios for the formal testing of the Worldwide Port System (WPS) Regional Integrated Cargo Database (ICDB). In collaboration with MTMC, ORNL wrote almost 600 Test Conditional Reports (TCRs), which were used to test specific functional processes. In addition, ORNL prepared the overall test order, managed tracking of problem reports and code u… more

Atmospheric transport of neutrons and gamma rays from near-horizon nuclear detonations

Description: This report continues a study of the transport of neutrons and rays from nuclear detonations at high altitudes to a set of detectors, with an emphasis on the limiting case of sources even beyond the horizon. To improve the calculational efficiency, the standard arrangement of a single source with multiple detectors is transformed to an equivalent one with a single detector and sources at multiple locations. Particular attention is paid to the critical problem of transport at near-horizon angles… more

Russian risk assessment methods and approaches

Description: One of the benefits resulting from the collapse of the Soviet Union is the increased dialogue currently taking place between American and Russian nuclear weapons scientists in various technical arenas. One of these arenas currently being investigated involves collaborative studies which illustrate how risk assessment is perceived and utilized in the Former Soviet Union (FSU). The collaborative studies indicate that, while similarities exist with respect to some methodologies, the assumptions an… more

EMP on a NTS experiment

Description: This report is a compilation of two previous sets of pretest calculations, references 1 and 2 and the grounding and shielding report, reference 3. The calculations performed in reference 1 were made for the baseline system, with the instrumentation trailers not isolated from ground, and wider ranges of ground conductivity were considered. This was used to develop the grounding and shielding plan included in the appendix. The final pretest calculations of reference 2 were performed for the modif… more

A pattern recognition algorithm for the blind discrimination of liquid and solid filled munitions

Description: A new pattern recognition algorithm is described for the nondestructive evaluation of stockpiled munitions. The algorithm performs blind classification on munitions to determine if they are liquid-filled (chemical) or solid-filled (conventional) munitions. The algorithm uses attributes of the acoustic spectrum of the munition under inspection to perform the discrimination. Results are presented on the performance of the pattern recognition algorithm on a large set of data collected from chemica… more

Emissions Characterization in the Contained Underground Demilitarization Laboratory at Nevada Test Site

Description: The US Departments of Defense and Energy (DOD and DOE) have established a Joint Demilitarization Technology (JDT) Program to demonstrate and validate technologies for resource recovery and recycling, as well as alternative destruction or treatment technologies as appropriate to specific conventional stockpile segments. X-Tunnel at the DOE Nevada Test Site is a facility for emissions characterization from detonation of conventional munitions and burning of rocket motors. We conducted seven deton… more

A status report on the development of SAC2000: A new seismic analysis code

Description: We are developing a new Seismic Analysis Code (SAC2000) that will meet the research needs of the seismic research and treaty monitoring communities. Our first step in this development was to rewrite the original Seismic Analysis Code (SAC) -- a Fortran code that was approximately 140,000 lines long -- in the C programming language. This rewrite has resulted in a much more robust code that is faster, more efficient, and more portable than the original. We have implemented important processing ca… more

HALFTON: A high-explosive containment experiment in partially saturated tuff

Description: The HALFTON experiment explored the phenomena of high explosive detonations in 90% water-saturated tuff rock. The explosive source was a 453 kg TNT sphere which was grouted in a drift in G Tunnel, Nevada Test Site. Active gages measured stresses and motions in the range of 1.3 to 5.3 cavity radii and showed a peak stress decay as range raised to the {minus}2.77 power. Additional stress gages were fielded to investigate the gage inclusion problem.

Recompletion report for BILBY

Description: The BILBY recompletion project was conducted in support of the Nevada Environmental Restoration Project at the Nevada Test Site (NTS), Nye County, Nevada. This project is part of the DOE`s Underground Test Area (UGTA) subproject at the NTS. The primary UGTA tasks include collecting geological, geophysical, and hydrological data from new and existing wells to define groundwater quality and to determine pathways and rates of groundwater migration at the NTS. A program of drilling or recompleting … more

Hybrid Processing of Measurable and Subjective Data

Description: Conventional systems surety analysis is basically restricted to measurable or physical-model-derived data. However, most analyses, including high-consequence system surety analysis, must also utilize subjective information. In order to address this need, there has been considerable effort on analytically incorporating engineering judgment. For example, Dempster-Shafer theory establishes a framework in which frequentist probability and Bayesian incorporation of new data are subsets. Although Bay… more

Application of powder metallurgy techniques for the development of non-toxic ammunition. Final CRADA report

Description: The purpose of the Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Inc., and Delta Frangible Ammunition (DFA), was to identify and evaluate composite materials for the development of small arms ammunition. Currently available small arms ammunition utilizes lead as the major component of the projectile. The introduction of lead into the environment by these projectiles when they are expended is a rapidly increasing environmental problem. At certain … more

MineSeis -- A MATLAB{reg_sign} GUI program to calculate synthetic seismograms from a linear, multi-shot blast source model

Description: Large scale (up to 5 kt) chemical blasts are routinely conducted by mining and quarry industries around the world to remove overburden or to fragment rocks. Because of their ability to trigger the future International Monitoring System (IMS) of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), these blasts are monitored and studied by verification seismologists for the purpose of discriminating them from possible clandestine nuclear tests. One important component of these studies is the modeling of gro… more

Performance characterization of the NASA standard detonator

Description: The NASA Standard Detonator (NSD) is employed in support of a number of current applications, including the Space Shuttle. This effort was directed towards providing test results to characterize the output of this device for its use in a safe and arm device. As part of the investigation, flash X-ray was used to provide stop-motion photographs of the flying metal plate that is created by initiation of the detonator. This provided researchers with a better understanding of the shape and character… more

Contaminant Boundary at the Faultless Underground Nuclear Test

Description: The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) have reached agreement on a corrective action strategy applicable to address the extent and potential impact of radionuclide contamination of groundwater at underground nuclear test locations. This strategy is described in detail in the Federal Facility Agreement and Consent Order (FFACO, 2000). As part of the corrective action strategy, the nuclear detonations that occurred underground were identifie… more
