Charge and angular distributions as well as sequential decay and. gamma. -ray emission in heavy ion collisions viewed in the light of the diffusion model

Description: The hierarchy of the collective relaxation times in heavy ion reactions is briefly reviewed. An improved diffusion model is introduced and applied to interpret the fragment Z and angular distributions for some typical reactions. The equilibrium in the neutron-to-proton ratio as well as the sharing of the excitation energy between fragments is studied by a coincidence method which leads to the measurement of the charge, mass and mean number of nucleons emitted by each fragment. The final destiny… more

Hadron physics at the new CW electron accelerators

Description: Major trends of the physics program related to the study of hadron structure and hadron spectroscopy at the new high current, high duty cycle electron machines are discussed. It is concluded that planned experiments at these machines may have important impact on our understanding of the strong interaction by studying the internal structure and spectroscopy of the nucleon and lower mass hyperon states.

Intermediate energy neutrino physics

Description: Occasionally, our understanding of a situation in physics is apparently so clear that consequences of a particular experimental result can imply a substantial confrontation with our view of the physical world. The standard model of electroweak interactions is now so clear that a number of experimental consequences are precisely predicted. This seems like a delightful situation for experimenters, but the bad news is that the experiments on which the predictions rest are at least hard and certain… more

Heavy quark production by neutrinos and antineutrinos. [Quark-parton model, SU(2) x SU(2) x U(1) gauge group, 200 GeV]

Description: The rate for producing t- and b-quarks in, respectively, neutrino and antineutrino interactions with nucleons are estimated. Experimental quark parton distribution functions, SU(2) x SU(2) x U(1) gauge group mixing angles, and threshold suppression through rescaling are used in the calculation. The ratios to total cross sections of b-quark production by anti nu, R/sub b//sup anti nu/, and t-quark production by ..nu.., R/sub t//sup nu/, are, respectively, R/sub b//sup anti nu/ approximately equa… more

Weak neutral currents and future Z mass measurements: Anticipating SLC

Description: The goals of this work are: to test the standard SU(2)/sub L/ x U(1) model at the tree and quantum loop level, provide a precise determination of sin/sup 2/ theta/sub W/ which could, for example, be used to rule out or at least constrain various grand unified theories (GUTS), and look for hints of ''new physics.'' The topics this paper elaborates on are radiative corrections, top quark mass bounds, grand unified theories (GUTS), and extra Z' boson constraints. In addition, the implications of a… more

Angular momentum and the collective modes excited in deep-inelastic processes and in fission. [288 MeV]

Description: The angular momentum effects in deep inelastic processes and fission were studied in the limit of statistical equilibrium. The model consists of two touching liquid drop spheres. Angular momentum fractionation was found to occur along the mass asymmetry coordinate. Thermal excitation of fragment spin is predicted to occur in the degrees of freedom which can bear angular momentum, like wriggling, tilting, bending, and twisting. 17 references.

Muon scattering into 1 to 5 muon final states. [90 to 209 MeV]

Description: Interactions of 209- and 90-GeV muons within a magnetized-steel calorimeter have produced final states containing one, two, three, four, and five muons. Redundant systems of proportional and drift chambers, fully sensitive in the forward direction, maintained 9% dimuon-mass resolution and high acceptance for multimuon final states. The first data are presented on F/sub 2/(x, Q/sup 2/) from charged lepton-nucleon scattering spanning a range in ln (ln, Q/sup 2/) comparable to that measured in hig… more

/bar p/p collider physics

Description: This note encompasses a set of six lectures given at the summer school held at Campos Do Jordao in January of 1989 near Sao Paulo, Brazil. The intent of the lectures was to describe the physics of /bar p/p at CERN and Fermilab. Particular attention has been paid to making a self contained presentation to a prospective audience of graduate students. Since large Monte Carlo codes might not be available to all members of this audience, great reliance was placed on ''back of the envelope estimates.… more

Measurement of the nucleon structure function using high energy muons

Description: We have measured the inclusive deep inelastic scattering of muons on nucleons in iron using beams of 93 and 215 GeV muons. To perform this measurement, we have built and operated the Multimuon Spectrometer (MMS) in the muon beam at Fermilab. The MMS is a magnetized iron target/spectrometer/calorimeter which provides 5.61 kg/cm/sup 2/ of target, 9% momentum resolution on scattered muons, and a direct measure of total hadronic energy with resolution sigma/sub nu/ = 1.4..sqrt..nu(GeV). In the dist… more

Muon energy loss at high energy and implications for detector design

Description: We study the effects of energy loss and associated electromagnetic showers on muon tracking and momentum measurement in muon detectors operating in the energy range 100 GeV-5 TeV. A detailed Monte Carlo simulation tracks muons and shower particles through a detector structure and evaluates the charged-particle environment in chambers. We find that catastrophic energy loss events accompanied by energetic showers can pose serious problems to designers of muon spectrometers. 14 refs., 6 figs.

Experimental search for W/Z pairs and Higgs bosons at very high energy hadron-hadron colliders

Description: We study, from an experimental point of view, the main ways to detect standard high mass Higgs bosons (from 300 GeV up to about 1 TeV) when they decay into W- and Z-pairs at the SSC. We also consider the corresponding W- and Z/sup 0/-pair continuum which may itself provide interesting physics, and we pay some attention to the case of an intermediate mass charged Higgs decaying into tau..nu../sub tau/ (m/sub H+-/ = 300 GeV). We first explain why and how high energy pp colliders may search for Hi… more

Experimental studies of quasi-fission reactions

Description: A large number of recent experimental studies have shown that a substantial fraction of the total reaction cross section in heavy-ion reactions is found in fission-like processes, which do not result from the fission decay of a completely fused system. Following the suggestion of Swiatecki such processes, which represents a complete relaxation of the relative kinetic energy and a substantial amount of net mass transfer between the two fragments, are denoted quasi-fission reactions. They are dis… more
