Asphalt Emulsion Radon Barrier Systems for Uranium Mill Tailings: An Overview of the Technology

Description: Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL), under contract to the US Department of Energy (DOE) Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action Project (UMTRAP) office, has developed an asphalt emulsion cover system to reduce the release of radon from uranium mill tailings. Description: EG G Idaho, Inc. developed an on-line aerosol monitor (OLAM) for the French PHEBUS Fission Product Project. Part of the development was to manufacture and test an OLAM prototype. Development of low level liquid waste treatment systems: April-September 1981

Description: The pilot plant reverse osmosis system was demonstrated to be effective in removing large percentages of cobalt-60, iodine-125, and a mixture of cesium-137, cobalt-60, and iodine-125 from two types of aqueous streams. The effectiveness of three membrane porosities, 0, 50, and 97% salt rejection, were explored with each isotope. The 97% salt rejection membrane was the most effective in each experiment. Simple home-made sensors for potentiometric titrations. [Nitroform CH(NO/sub 2/)/sub 3/]

Description: A sensor for potentiometric titrations was prepared by coating a spectroscopic graphite rod with a solution of poly(vinyl chloride) and dioctyphthalate in tetrahydrofuran. The reference electrode was an Ag/AgCl single-junction electrode. The sensor was used in precipitation, acid-base, compleximetric, and redox titrations. Methodology for the isolation and characterization of individual plutonium-bearing particles in atmospheric effluents from a nuclear processing plant

An HMS/TRAC analysis of a high-level radioactive waste tank

Description: It has been observed that a high-level radioactive waste tank generates quantities of hydrogen and nitrous oxide mixtures that are potentially well within flammability limits. Synergistic capture mechanisms for alkali and sulfur species from combustion

Description: An aerosol reactor system has been designed and constructed for the systematic study of the mechanisms governing the possible synergistic capture of sulfur oxide and alkalis with aluminosilicates and lime (CaO). Actual particle dynamics found in coal combustor systems can be simulated, mass balances can be closed, and the system conditions are well controlled. Conceptual design of a black liquor gasification pilot plant

Description: In July 1985, Champion International completed a study of kraft black liquor gasification and use of the product gases in a combined cycle cogeneration system based on gas turbines. That study indicated that gasification had high potential as an alternative to recovery boiler technology and offered many advantages. Roasting and dissolution studies on nonirradiated thorium dioxide/uranium dioxide pellets

Description: Bench scale roasting and dissolution of ThO/sub 2/ and ThO/sub 2//UO/sub 2/ ractor-grade ceramic pellets were studied at the Savannah River Laboratory to define the key parameters affecting dissolution. Inhibiting pitting corrosion in carbon steel exposed to dilute radioactive waste slurries

Description: Dilute caustic high-level radioactive waste slurries can induce pitting corrosion in carbon steel.
