UV repopulation of TL traps in LiF

Description: The observance of simultaneous electrical glow and TL glow peaks in crystals of a pure LiF is reported. TL glow peaks at about 80/sup 0/C and about 120/sup 0/C are accompanied by peaks in the electrical conductivity of the crystal. Bleaching in the F band of a crystal of LiF, which was initially exposed to 3 MegR and annealed at 150/sup 0/C for five minutes, reproduces both the TL and electrical glow peaks.

Control of oxygen, hydrogen, and tritium in sodium systems at Experimental Breeder Reactor II

Description: The source rates and steady-state concentrations have been measured for oxygen, hydrogen, and tritium impurities in EBR-II sodium systems. An analytical approach is used to determine the effectiveness of the cold traps for removing oxygen, hydrogen, and tritium. The cold-trap effectiveness data accumulated to date for removal of oxygen, hydrogen, and tritium indicate that EBR-II cold traps are highly effective in controlling these impurities to very low concentrations in the sodium systems.

Recent work on sodium-cooled reactor purification systems

Description: Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF) cold traps, including the Reactor Primary Cold Trap, the Reactor Secondary Cold Trap and the Closed Loop Cold Trap were fabricated and their thermal performances measured on sodium test systems. The cold traps all met reactor requirements after necessary economizer modifications. Mercury tests were performed to study the effect of woven wire packing on the flow of a liquid metal adjacent to a heated vertical wall as occurs in the cold trap crystallizer. The mesh w… more

Finnigan ion trap mass spectrometer detection limits and thermal energy analyzer interface status report and present capabilities

Description: A new Finnigan ion trap mass spectrometer was purchased and installed at LLNL. Over a period of several months the instrument was tested under a variety of conditions utilizing a capillary gas chromatography interface which allowed separated organic compounds to be carried directly into the ion source of the mass spectrometer. This direct interface allowed maximum analytical sensitivity. A variety of critical tests were performed in order to optimize the sensitivity of the system under a variet… more

Wireless Sensing, Monitoring and Optimization for Campus-Wide Steam Distribution

Description: The US Congress has passed legislation dictating that all government agencies establish a plan and process for improving energy efficiencies at their sites. In response to this legislation, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has recently conducted a pilot study to explore the deployment of a wireless sensor system for a real-time measurement-based energy efficiency optimization. With particular focus on the 12-mile long steam distribution network in our campus, we propose an integrated system… more

Electron Traps In p-Type GaAsN Characterized by Deep-Level Transient Spectroscopy

Description: We have used deep-level transient spectroscopy to detect traps in p-type GaAsN grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. Although minority-carrier electrons are not intentionally injected into the depletion region of the measured samples, electron traps are detected in both Schottky barrier and p-n junction devices. The electron-trap signal can exist using only reverse biases during measurement, and checks of series resistance and minority-carrier injection using an optical source also … more

OPERATION OF THE SODIUM TECHNOLOGY LOOP FOR CONTAMINATION METER EVALUATIONS

Description: The Blake Rhometer operating range was extended from 600 to 1000 deg F and a variable-orifice plugging meter was developed. Both instruments were evaluated in the Atomic Power Development Associates Scdium Technology Loop against weighed or metered contaminants. The loop injection series included: water, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and methane gases; and tea bag injections of sodium carbonate, sodium hydride, sodium hydroxide, and sodium monoxide. Cover gas was monitored and temp… more

Study of phonon-induced energy transfer processes in crystals using heat pulses

Description: The artificial generation of acoustic lattice vibrations by a heat pulse technique is developed in order to probe phonon interactions in molecular crystals. Specifically, the phonon-assisted delocalization of ''trapped'' excited triplet state energy in the aromatic crystal 1,2,4,5-tetrachlorobenzene (TCB) is studied in a quantitative manner by monitoring the time-resolved decrease in trap phosphorescence intensity due to the propagation of a well-defined heat pulse. The excitation distribution … more

Reduction of the trapping of positrons in dislocated single crystals of iron when charged with hydrogen

Description: The positron annihilation measurement was carried out with the pure iron single crystals deformed in various ways before and after hydrogen permeation. The positron trapping intensity was reduced more in the screw dislocation than in the edge dislocation by hydrogen charging. The trap occupancy by hydrogen was very close to the fraction of the reduction in positron trapping intensity.

Determination of edge and screw dislocation density in single crystals of high-purity iron

Description: The trapping of positrons in dislocation-associated traps has been studied and the density of traps has been demonstrated to be in close agreement with the density of dislocations determined by TEM and etch-pit measurements on the same specimens. The specific trapping rates were determined.

Traps for scavenging hydrogen isotopes

Description: Uranium traps have been used for many years to pump, store, and purify tritium at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. More recently, uranium traps have been designed to scavenge low levels of tritium from inert gas streams. Because of this familiarity with designing and using getter traps, we have begun to develop traps for the Magnetic Fusion E nergy Program requirements. Specific applications include processing tritium for test reactors and removing tritium from blanket materials. There are a numb… more

Waste Generated from LMR-AMTEC Reactor Concept

Description: The candidate Liquid Metal Reactor-Alkali Metal Thermal -to- Electric Converter (LMR-AMTEC) is considered to be the first reactor that would use pure liquid potassium as a secondary coolant, in which potassium vapor aids in the conversion of thermal energy to electric energy. As with all energy production, the thermal generation of electricity produces wastes. These wastes must be managed in ways which safeguard human health and minimize their impact on the environment. Nuclear power is the onl… more

Description: An apparatus to study rare-gas fission-product release from nuclear fuel materials during postirradiation heating was developed. Xenon and krypton fission gases escaping from a small specimen during heating at constant temperature are measured using a continuous radioactivity monitor and charcoal adsorption traps. The rhodium-wound furnace is capable of operation at 1600 deg C. Helium carrier gas is purified by activated alumina, copper, and zirconium traps, and the oxygen and moisture contents… more

Measurement and Correlation of Conditions for Entrapment and Mobilization of Residual Oil: First Annual Report

Description: Substantial progress has been made in four major task areas. The first task is to establish the limits of reliability of laboratory waterflooding as an evaluation tool. Wettability is identified as a key variable. Work is being extended to wetting properties of crude oils and core flooding. The second task concerns the effects of high capillary number flows on trapping phenomena and residual oil saturation. Correlations of capillary number and relative permeability behavior at reduced residual … more

An intense source of positrons using a low energy proton beam

Description: An intense source of positrons would make it possible to consider linear collider designs for the flavor factories now being proposed. Such designs might have the advantage of higher luminosity than circular colliders and would also provide an arena for the further development of linear colliders in preparation for the next generation of TeV linear colliders. An intense source of positrons would also make it possible to be more flexible in the design of the next generation of TeV linear collide… more
