Intricate Mechanisms-on-a Chip Enabled by 5-Level Surface Micromachining

Description: Surface micromachining generally offers more design freedom than related technologies, and it is the technology of choice for most microelectromechanical applications that require multi-level structures. However, the design flexibility that surface micromachining offers is not without limitations. In addition to determining how to fabricate devices in a planar world, the designer also needs to consider issues such as film quality, thickness, residual stress, topography propagation, stringers, p… more

High Frequency Laser-Based Ultrasound

Description: To obtain micrometer resolution of materials using acoustics requires frequencies around 1 GHz. Attenuation of such frequencies is high, limiting the thickness of the parts that can be characterized. Although acoustic microscopes can operate up to several GHz in frequency, they are used primarily as a surface characterization tool. The use of a pulsed laser for acoustic generation allows generation directly in the part, eliminating the loss of energy associated with coupling the energy from a p… more

Mointoring Thickness Deviations in Planar Multi-Layered Elastic Structures Using Impedance Signatures

Description: In this letter, a low frequency ultrasonic resonance technique that operates in the (20 - 80 kHz) regime is presented that demonstrates detection of thickness changes on the order of +/- 10{micro}m. This measurement capability is a result of the direct correlation between the electrical impedance of an electro-acoustic transducer and the mechanical loading it experiences when placed in contact with a layered elastic structure. The relative frequency shifts of the resonances peaks can be estimat… more

COUPLED TRANSMISSION LINES

Description: >Tests on a coupled transmission line resonator show that a fairly accurate value of the coupling coefficient can be predicted by considering line geometry. The measured values of V/sub 02/ and I/sub 02/ appear to agree with predicted values. Development of a resonator for ORIC with two coupled transmission lines is under way. (W.L.H.)

Salt Valve and Instrumentation Test Using the Nagle Long Shafted Pump: Final Report

Description: The Salt Valve and Instrumentation Test was done to provide data on equipment performance in high temperature environments similar to that expected in the next large scale application of that technology. The experiment tested three different valves: (1) a valve with the standard valve body and standard high temperature self-packing material; (2) a valve with the standard valve body and stainless steel O-rings; and (3) a magnetic valve that uses a high temperature coil and no packing material. Impulse Response Estimation for Spatial Resolution Enhancement in Ultrasonic NDE Imaging

Description: This report describes a signal processing algorithm and MATLAB software for improving spatial resolution in ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation (NDE) imaging of materials. Given a measured reflection signal and an associated reference signal, the algorithm produces an optimal least-squares estimate of the impulse response of the material under test. This estimated impulse response, when used in place of the raw reflection signal, enhances the spatial resolution of the ultrasonic measurements b… more

Through-Wall Communicatin of Low-Rate Digital Data Using Ultrasound

Description: Wireless communication is ineffective for communicating through a solid steel wall due to the shielding effect of the metal. In some cases, holes can be made in the wall to allow wires to pass through, enabling the transport of electronic data. However, holes are often undesirable because they can reduce the integrity of the wall. This paper describes several approaches for using ultrasound to communicate low-rate digital data through a steel wall. The techniques minimize the complexity and pow… more

Fast Analysis System for Bubble Chamber Data

Description: A type of precision measuring instrument, a flying spot digitizer, for the analysis of bubble chamber data is described. When the flying spot encounters a bubble image, it is attenuated typically 25 to 75% depending on the directness of hit and the bubble chamber photographic and operating parameters. The width of the bell-shaped attenuation curve is approximates the sum of the spot and bubble image diameters, or 40 to 50 mu . The high precision of the FSD derives from the fact that it is possi… more

MAGNETIC RECORDER FOR NUCLEAR PULSE APPLICATION. Period covered: December 6, 1959 to February 5, 1960

Description: An evaluation of a modulator flux sensitive playback head to be used with an analog magnetic recorder for nuclear pulse information storage was made. The modulator head was found unsultable. A pulse stretching unit was constructed which takes pulses from a standard linear pulse amplifier and provides an output signal suitable for driving a recording head. Low-jitter sonoluminescence cell

Description: This report constitutes the final report for subcontract B338667. The statement of work for this subcontract was divided into three tasks: Task 1: Produce and quantify the stability of a sonoluminescence cell. The quantification will entail measuring the variation of the amplitude of the light flashes, here called events, and the variation in the time between the individual events i.e., the jitter. On a best effort basis we desire the light amplitude to be stable within 20 So and the jitter bet… more
