Sub-M-Rad Angular Stability Measurements by Use of Long Trace Profiler Based Systems

Description: High accuracy angle measurement at the sub-{mu}rad level requires extremely high instrument stability. In order to reach sub-{mu}rad stability (0.1 arc second or less) over long time periods, it is necessary to maintain the test object and almost all of the optical components in the measuring instrument in very steady positions. However, mechanical force relaxation, thermal expansion, and asymmetric structures produce angular and linear displacements in the system resulting in angular measureme… more

Liquid-phase detection instrument to record and annunciate procedural deviations in sintering runs

Description: A liquid-phase detection instrument (LPDI) has been developed to aid in making consistently accurate alloy sintering runs. The LPDI displays the furnace temperature, detects the alloy's liquid-phase arrest temperature, calculates the necessary hold temperature from the arrest temperature (i.e., calibrates the system), and provides a digital record for quality assurance purposes. In field tests, the instrument's detected arrest temperature was within +1/sup 0/ to -0/sup 0/C of an opera… more

Use of Near-Infrared Detector to Sense RF Antenna Heating

Description: The three antennas used for ion cyclotron heating (ICH) experiments on DIII-D have experienced localized heating of the Faraday shield rods during plasma operations which has resulted in some melting. This melting is of great concern not only because of the damage it does to the rf system's ability to deliver rf to the plasma, but because of its potential to contaminate the plasma during a shot and cast the experimental results from the shot into question. A real-time sensor to detect the tempe… more

Process Test Plan Shutdown P16 Exhauster

Description: This Process Test Plan was written to gather temperature data to determine the amount of heat load remaining in tank 241-C-106. This process test plan is being conducted to gather the temperature data necessary to determine how much of the initial heat load is still left in 241-C-106. The heat load will be determined by shutting off the C-106 exhaust system, monitoring the change in tank temperature, and plugging the resulting data into the thermal model for this tank.
