Solar variability observed through changes in solar limb-darkening function and mean diameter. Final report, February 1, 1987--August 31, 1993

Description: The advantages of a dedicated, ground-based observatory over measurements from spacecraft are its relative adaptability, ease of maintenance, and low cost. However, groundbased observations must contend with problems introduced by observing through the Ear-th`s atmosphere and by changes in the long-term stability of the observing instrument. Both of these problems have been addressed at SCLERA and currently pose no limitation of solar diameter measurements at the parts-per-n-tillion level. The … more

What have we learned about the solar interior from solar oscillations?

Description: After a brief review of the discovery and properties of solar oscillations, I summarize the significant advances in our knowledge of the Sun`s interior structure achieved by using solar oscillation frequency data. I discuss the surprising solar interior rotation profile; the precise determination of the convection zone depth; the convection zone helium abundance; evidence for diffusive settling of helium during the Sun`s 4.5 billion year lifetime; and the Sun`s central structure and implication… more

Sustainable Energy Solutions for Water Purification Applications: Municipal and Industrial Case Studies

Description: In several areas around the world, clean water is a precious asset that at anytime, and mainly due to circumstances of weather and climate, can become scarce. Mainly in the dry and remote places, people suffer with lack of water. A solution for this suffering can be a water desalination system, which makes water potable and usable for industry. That solution inherently, brings the problem of power requirement, which is sometimes arduous to accomplish in such remote areas of difficult access and… more

Measuring solar abundances

Description: This is the rapporteur paper of Working Group 2 on Measuring Solar Abundances. The working group presented and discussed the different observations and methods for obtaining the elemental and isotopic composition of the Sun, and critically reviewed their results and the accuracies thereof. Furthermore, a few important yet unanswered questions were identified, and the potential of future missions to provide answers was assessed.

Delta Scuti stars: Theory

Description: The purpose of asteroseismology is not only to derive the internal structure of individual stars from their observed oscillation frequencies, but also to test and extend one`s understanding of the physics of matter under the extremes of temperature, density, and pressure found in stellar interiors. In this review, the author hopes to point out what one can learn about the Sun by studying {delta} Scuti stars, as well as what one can learn about stars more massive or evolved than the Sun. He disc… more

Reheating metastable O'Raifeartaigh models

Description: In theories with multiple vacua, reheating to a temperature greater than the height of a barrier can stimulate transitions from a desirable metastable vacuum to a lower energy state. We discuss the constraints this places on various theories and demonstrate that in a class of supersymmetric models this transition does not occur even for arbitrarily high reheating temperature.

SunLab: Concentrating Solar Power Program Overview

Description: DOE's Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) program is collaborating with its partners in the private sector to develop two new solar technologies -- power towers and dish/engines -- to meet the huge commercial potential for solar power. Concentrating solar power plants produce electric power by first converting the sun's energy into heat, and then to electricity in a conventional generator.

State-of-the-Art Solar Simulator Reduces Measurement Time and Uncertainty (Fact Sheet)

Description: One-Sun Multisource Solar Simulator (OSMSS) brings accurate energy-rating predictions that account for the nonlinear behavior of multijunction photovoltaic devices. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is one of only a few International Organization for Standardization (ISO)-accredited calibration labs in the world for primary and secondary reference cells and modules. As such, it is critical to seek new horizons in developing simulators and measurement methods. Current solar simulat… more

Global Solar UV Index

Description: The Global Solar UV Index (UVI) described in this document is a simple measure of the UV radiation level at the Earth’s surface and an indicator of the potential for skin damage. It serves as an important vehicle to raise public awareness and to alert people about the need to adopt protective measures when exposed to UV radiation.

CMEs at High Northern Latitudes During Solar Maximum : Ulysses and SOHO Correlated Observations.

Description: From September through November 2001, Ulysses was almost continuously immersed in polar coronal hole (CH) flow during its northern polar pass of the Sun. For much of this time, the flow was fast (> 700 km/s) and steady, quite similar to the steady unstructured flow observed during Ulysses first polar orbit near solar minimum. During the three months Ulysses transited the northern polar CH it observed 5 coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Of these, two were clearly over-expanding and two were at l… more

Limits on a muon flux from neutralino annihilations in the Sun with the IceCube 22-string detector

Description: A search for muon neutrinos from neutralino annihilations in the Sun has been performed with the IceCube 22-string neutrino detector using data collected in 104.3 days of live-time in 2007. No excess over the expected atmospheric background has been observed. Upper limits have been obtained on the annihilation rate of captured neutralinos in the Sun and converted to limits on the WIMP-proton cross-sections for WIMP masses in the range 250-5000 GeV. These results are the most stringent limits to… more

Using solar oscillations to constrain the equation of state and low-temperature opacities

Description: Because thousands of solar P-mode oscillation frequencies have been measured to high accuracy, direct comparisons between calculated and observed frequencies are an excellent means of testing solar interior physics. Here we compare observed and calculated nonadiabatic frequencies of solar models that include diffusive settling of helium and heavier elements. We consider the effects of low-temperature opacities, equation of state, and a nonequilibrium radiation diffusion treatment on solar struc… more
