Caspian Oil and Gas: Production and Prospects

Description: There is a likelihood of large reserves of crude oil and natural gas in the Caspian Sea region, and a consequent large increase in oil and natural gas production from that area. Because diversity of energy sources is a consideration in Congressional deliberations on energy policy, this prospect could play a role in such discussions. However, there are notable obstacles to increases in Caspian Sea region production of oil and gas that may slow development.

Energy reserves. [Summary of reserve estimates and economic supply models for exhaustible resources]

Description: There is an increasing concern about scarcity of the world's remaining natural energy resources and, in particular, the future supply of oil and natural gas. This paper summarizes recent estimates of energy reserves and economic supply models for exhaustible resources. The basic economic theory of resource exhaustion is reviewed, and recent estimates of both discovered and undiscovered energy resources are presented and compared. Domestic and world-wide reserve estimates are presented for crude… more

Geostatistics project of the National Uranium Resource Evaluation Program. Progress report, April-September 1980

Description: A large computer code was written to perform a number of discriminant analysis procedures on aerial radiometric data. Work on percentile estimation, using the normal and log-normal probability distributions, was extended. Additional work was performed on methods of computing with large data sets. Attempts are being made to evaluate the behavior of principal components analysis relative to element distribution in a survey area. We also provided general statistical consulting in such areas as dis… more

Peat as an energy alternative

Description: The importance of developing alternative energy sources to augment supplies of fossil fuels is growing all over the world. Coal, oil shale, tar sands, biomass, solar, geothermal, nuclear, and hydroelectric power have received considerable attention as alternative energy sources. One large energy resource, however, has received little attention until recently. That resource is peat. Although peat is used as an energy source in some countries such as Russia, Ireland, and Finland, it is virtually … more

Prediction of subsidence resulting from creep closure of solutioned-mined caverns in salt domes

Description: The prediction of subsidence rates over a range of areal configurations of solution-mined caverns in salt domes is possible, based on some fifty years of history in solution mining. Several approaches contribute to predictions: site-specific observations obtained from subsidence monitoring; numerical modeling, now becoming more practicable and credible; salt-creep data from testing; and rule-of-thumb methods, based on experience. All of these approaches contribute to understanding subsidence bu… more

Reserves in Western Basins. Seventh quarterly technical progress report, [April 1, 1993--June 30, 1993]

Description: The project objective is to estimate the commercially recoverable tight gas reserves for the DOE priority basins. The work consists of a combination and integration of existing tight gas-in-place resources with engineering studies of recovery effectiveness and industry production histories into basin-wide estimates of tight gas reserves. The work will begin in the Greater Green River basin and will be carried forward to the Piceance and Uinta basins in the outyears. Technical work has been comp… more

Regulation of Energy Derivatives

Description: This report analyzes the development of regulation for energy derivatives (financial contracts whose value is linked to changes in the price of some energy product). Regulation may be needed [1] to help prevent abusive trading and price manipulation, and [2] to help prevent the failure of a large derivatives dealer which could trigger disruptions of supplies and prices in oil and gas markets.

The Naval Petroleum Reserves: Proposed Sale and Issues

Description: The Naval Petroleum Reserves (NPR)--consisting of the large Elk Hills Field in California and smaller fields at Buena Vista Hills (CA) and Teapot Dome (WY)--were established in the early 1900s. Congress authorized full production of the NPR in 1976. Production at Elk Hills, the most significant field, peaked at 181,000 barrels per day (b/d) in 1981; currently, it is 65,000 b/d. The Clinton Administration earmarked the NPR for sale in its FY1996 budget, estimating its gross value at $2.6 billion. more
