Zintl cluster chemistry in the alkali-metal-gallium systems

Description: Previous research into the alkali-metal-gallium systems has revealed a large variety of networked gallium deltahedra. The clusters are analogues to borane clusters and follow the same electronic requirements of 2n+2 skeletal electrons for closo-deltahedra. This work has focused on compounds that do not follow the typical electron counting rules. The first isolated gallium cluster was found in Cs{sub 8}Ga{sub 11}. The geometry of the Ga{sub 11}{sup 7{minus}} unit is not deltahedral but can be de… more

NaK pool-boiler bench-scale receiver durability test: Test results and materials analysis

Description: Pool-boiler reflux receivers have been considered as an alternative to heat pipes for the input of concentrated solar energy to Stirling-cycle engines in dish-Stirling electric generation systems. Pool boilers offer simplicity in design and fabrication. The operation of a full-scale pool-boiler receiver has been demonstrated for short periods of time. However, to generate cost-effective electricity, the receiver must operate Without significant maintenance for the entire system life, as much as… more

The EBR-I Meltdown--Physical and Metallurgical Changes in the Core. Final Report--Metallurgy Program 7.2.18

Description: As a result of the partial meltdown which occurred in EBR-1 on November 29, 1955, it was necessary to remove the core assembly from the reactor and to separate the enriched fuel section from upper and lower unenriched blanket sections. A temporary cave was constructed on top of the reactor in order to remove the core assembly, and at this time about one-fourth of the fuel elements were removed. In order to perform further disassembly operations under less hazardous conditions, the core assembly… more

Summary report for ITER Task-T19: MHD pressure drop and heat transfer study for liquid metal systems

Description: A key feasibility issue for the ITER Vanadium/Lithium breeding blanket is the question of insulator coatings. Design calculations show that an electrically insulating layer is necessary to maintain an acceptably low MHD pressure drop. To begin experimental investigations of the MHD performance of candidate insulator materials and the technology for putting them in place, a new test section was prepared. Aluminum oxide was chosen as the first candidate insulating material because it may be used … more

Irradiation Effects on Massive Uranium Mono-Carbide

Description: The results of examinations of UC compounds having nominal compositions of uranium-4.6, -4.8, and 5.0 wt. % carbon after irradiation to burnups of from 400 to 15,000 Mwd/t of uranium are given. Density changes were small. varying from a minimum of 0.3% to a maximum of about 2.5%. Cracking occurred in all specimens; however. it can probably be largely attributed to thermal stresses and to oxidation. after decapsulation. of NaK entrapped in microcracks. Depletion of carbon appears to be occurring… more

Operation of the Distillation Method for the Determination of Sodium Oxide in NaK During the Calibration of a Plug Indicator

Description: The distillation method (Argonne Sampler) for the analysis of sodium oxide in NaK was used to calibrate a plug indicator. The description of the equipment, procedure, and experiences with the Argonne Samplers are presented in great detail to aid future users of this method. Although this method is not very precise, it has been thoroughly checked out and is recommended as a standard means for sampling and analysis for oxide in liquid metal systems. (auth)

THE MANUFACTURE OF CENTRIFUGALLY CAST ALLOY FUEL SLUGS (MARK-II FUEL LOADING FOR EBR-I)

Description: The fabrication of the Mark-II fuel loading for EBR-I, consisting of a U- 2 wt.% Zr alloy, is described. Fuel slugs measuring 0.383 in. in diameter were centrifugally cast to size in massive Cu molds. The resulting microstructure was characterized by a fine grain size and a completely random grain orientation not easily obtained in wrought fissile material of comparable composition, even after heat treatment. Reproducibility of the desirable as-cast structure and physical properties of the fuel… more

Fabrication of Dispersed Uranium Fuel Elements Using Powder-Metallurgy Techniques

Description: Fabrication techniques for producing dispersion fuel elements with cores of 30 volume per cent of UC, U/sub 2/Ti, U/sub 3/Si, or U/sub 6/Ni dispersed in Zircaloy 2 and 30 volume per cent of UC or UN dispersed in Type 18-8 stainless steel have been investigated. Roll-clad plate-type elements of all these compositions may be fabricated by powdermetallurgy methods in such a manner that good core-tocladding bonds and cores with uniform dispersions of discrete uranium- compound particles are obtaine… more

TURBULENT HEAT TRANSFER FROM A MOLTEN FLUORIDE SALT MIXTURE TO SODIUM- POTASSIUM ALLOY IN A DOUBLE-TUBE HEAT EXCHANGER

Description: Mixtures of fluoride salts were found to show promise for the circulating-fuel application. An experiment to measure the heat transfer characteristics of the fluoride salt mixture NaF-- ZrF/sub 4/-- UF/sub 4/ was performed. A correlation of film heat transfer coefficients and the effect on heat transfer of deposits resulting from corrosion or mass transfer of container materials are reported. (J.E.D.)

Design and operation of a 10.000 GPM D.C. electromagnetic sodium pump and 250.000 ampere homopolar generator

Description: single unit with the abililty to pump highly radioactive sodium (10/sup 8/ Mev/(cm/sup 3/) (sec) at high temperature (800 deg C) is described. The unit components are aligned vertically to reduce the electrical conductor length between homopolar generator and pump. The entire structure, including the 1250- hp drive motor is 30 ft high and weighs 35 tons. The pump is designed to develop a head of 75 psi at a pumping rate of 10,000 gpm. At this rate the generator must deliver 250,000 amp at 2.5 v… more

METALLURGICAL STUDIES OF NIOBIUM-URANIUM ALLOYS

Description: In a continuing program, fabrication characteristics, physical and mechanical properties, and corrosion behavior in air, CO/sub 2/, NaK, water, and steam were studied for . binary niobium fuel alloys containing 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 wt.% uranium To evaluate the effects of two major impurities of niobium, oxygen, and zirconium, three niobium base stocks, differing according to the level of these impurities, were used for each alloy. The impurity combinations employed were 600 ppm oxygen and… more
