Some considerations on uv optics for synchrotron radiation

Description: Special problems of radiation shorter than about 2000A are discussed. Basic optics principles are reviewed, including the critical angle, total reflection, ''order sorting,'' and mirror configuration. The power present in the beam of synchrotron radiation is considered. Ray tracing mirrors and gratings is addressed in some detail. Finally, ray tracing is applied to a hypothetical toroidal grating monochromator. 6 figures. (RWR)

Transparent heat mirrors for passive solar heating applications

Description: Recent progress in the development of transparent heat mirror coatings for energy-efficient windows and passive solar applications is reviewed. It appears that cost-efficient coatings promising savings of 25 to 75%, depending upon application, may be available to window manufacturers and homeowners in the next one to three years. Performance, applications, and limitations are discussed.

Evaluation of Environmentally Safe Cleaning Agents for Diamond Turned Optics

Description: Precision machining of metal surfaces using diamond turning has increased greatly in popularity at LANL in recent years. Similar techniques are used extensively to manufacture metal mirrors for use in laser applications. The diamond turned surfaces are easily damaged, making the selection of a cleaning agent very critical. These surfaces have been traditionally cleaned using Trichloroethane (TCA) to remove residual oil remaining from the machining process. The TCA was then removed with an ethan… more

Optical interference coatings for improved luminaire performance. Final report

Description: An interior broadbeam HID uplight and an upstream roadway luminaire were developed to demonstrate that optical coated luminaire components can improve the visual effectiveness and energy efficiency of a lighting system. Optical coated reflectors and flat lens covers were very effective in the development of new improved lighting techniques. The coatings reduce reflection and transmission losses, opening the door to new design options for improving lighting performance and saving energy.

Pen Branch fault program: Interim report on the High Resolution, Shallow Seismic Reflection surveys

Description: The Pen Branch fault was identified in the subsurface at the Savannah River Site in 1989 based upon the interpretation of earlier seismic reflection surveys and other geologic investigations. A program was initiated at that time to further define the fault in terms of its capability to release seismic energy. The High-Resolution, Shallow Seismic Reflection survey recently completed at SRS was initiated to determine the shallowest extent of the fault and to demonstrate the presence of flat-lying… more

Measurement of the optical performance of liquid scintillator filled Teflon-fiber tubes

Description: A study of the optical performance of a liquid scintillator (BC517L) filled Teflon tube of inner diameter 0.06 cm, was carried out using a rectangular array of those tubes. Two experimental methods, the cosmic ray telescope and the direct scouce method, were used in measuring the light output (in photoelectrons) and the light attenuation length through the scintillator. Results showed the light output from this array for minimum ionizing charged particles to ba a fraction of a photoelectron (ab… more

Satellite power system (SPS) brightness due to reflected sunlight

Description: The development and operation of a Satellite Power System would place very large structures in orbit around earth for several decades. Sunlight reflected off such structures, particularly specular components from large flat areas, is expected to create ground illumination that will attract observers. In order to assure that this illumination does not exceed the irradiance tolerances of the eye, reflections from these satellites must be carefully controlled by vehicle orientation and surface spe… more

Amorphous-Si solar cells. First quarterly progress report, 1 January-31 March 1979

Description: The effort at University of Delaware during the first three months of a Department of Energy sponsored a-Si program is described. The objectives of the program are to study and improve photovoltaic properties of plasma-deposited a-Si and model a-Si devices with a view towards improving device design. A capacitively-coupled, rf-induced plasma-system for depositing a-Si has been built and a-Si films have been deposited from SiH/sub 4/ decomposition. The resistivity, doping and photoconductivity s… more

Laser conditioning and electronic defect measurements of HfO sub 2 and SiO sub 2 thin films

Description: Multilayer HfO{sub 2}/SiO{sub 2} high reflectors (HR) and polarizers show a permanent increase in their 1064-nm damage thresholds following laser conditioning at subthreshold fluences. Threshold increases of 2--3x are typical. In an effort to better understand the conditioning effect we have made laser conditioning and electronic property measurements on single layers of these two materials. The laser damage threshold of 1-{mu}m thick e-beam deposited SiO{sub 2} was increased by laser condition… more
