Improving the Long-term Performance of PVC Compositions

Description: PVC are extensively applied in many fields, such as cables, pipes, vehicles, shoes, toys and infusion bags. Generally, plasticizers are blended with PVC to improve the ability of process in industrial production; however, the toxic plasticizers will gradually migrate to the surface of products and such a leakage results in brittleness of plasticized PVC and environmental pollution. In other words, humans are frequently exposed to the potential risks. According to previous researches, cross-link… more

Upstream Passage, Spawning, and Stock Identification of Fall Chinook Salmon in the Snake River, 1992 : Annual Report FY 92-93.

Description: This report summarizes the activities and results for the second year (1992) of a three year study. The goals of the study were as follows: (1) to determine the source (s) of interdam losses of adult fall chinook salmon between Ice Harbor Dam (IHR) and Lower Granite Dam (LGR), as well as upstream of LGR; (2) identify spawning locations upstream of LGR for calibration of aerial redd surveys, and to assist with redd habitat mapping and carcass recovery (for genetic stock profile analysis). Defect Mobility and Reaction: Diffusional and Rate Theory Formulations in One and Three Dimensions.

Description: The migration of defects, leading to eventual reaction, is analyzed on the basis of diffusion theory and compared with chemical rate theory. A diffusional treatment is carried out in detail and in special cases of particular interest. Correlations between interstitials and vacancies, typical of metals following electron irradiation, are examined. Trapping by impurities and dislocations, thermal conversion, and high temperature bombardment are also treated. In each case, formulations are develop… more

Emigration of Natural and Hatchery Chinook Salmon and Steelhead Smolts from the Imnaha River, Oregon, October 20, 1999 to June 15, 2000 : 2000 Annual Report.

Description: This report details the smolt performance of natural and hatchery chinook salmon and steelhead from the Imnaha River to the Snake River and Columbia River dams during migration year 2000. Flow conditions in the Imnaha River and Snake River were appreciably lower during May and June in 2000, compared to historic levels at gauging stations, but flow conditions in the Imnaha and Snake River were above average during April. Overall, water conditions for the entire Columbia River were characterized … more

One-dimensional model of the movement of trace radioactive solute through soil columns: the PERCOL model

Description: A one-dimensional mathematical model, PERCOL, has been developed to predict the movement of radionuclides through porous media as a function of measurable chemical parameters of the media. Laboratory column studies were conducted to verify the model. System parameters considered include soil type, radionuclide type, waste composition, flow rate, column length, and soil saturation. The agreement between measured radionuclide movement and that predicted by the model is considered good.(auth)

Determinants of Refugee Production: an Exploratory Analysis

Description: The issue of refugees and the factors which result in forced migration are of growing importance. Currently, one in every 120 people is living outside of his or her nation of origin by force. There appears to be no end in sight to this situation. This paper seeks to examine conditions within a nation which contribute to the production of refugees. Using a model based on Clark's (1989) early warning system, this paper examines both proximate and root causes of refugee migration. The findings sug… more

Theory of Point Defect Annealing in Metals

Description: The kinetics of the annealing of point defects, either by migration to sinks or by recombination, is complicated by the occurrence of a variety of simultaneous reactions. An extensive theoretical study of annealing processes is in progress at Brookhaven based on the isolation and combination of simple kinetic steps. When analytic solutions could not be found, computer solutions have been used to obtain useful approximations and to determine their regions of validity. Two migration reaction sche… more

The Raman Spectra and Structure of Perrhenium Acid and Perrhenate Ion

Description: The Raman spectrum shows that sulphate, selenate and perchloride ions have a tetrahedral structure in solution. Tellurium, molybdenum and tungsten should be surrounded by six oxygen atoms and should therefore form a octahedral structure. The author investigates the Raman-spectra of several perrhenates and of perrhenium acid.

Mathematical model for the transport of environmental plutonium

Description: From joint meeting of the American Nuclear Society and the Atomic Industrial Forum and Nuclear Energy Exhibition; San Francisco, California, USA (11 Nov 1973). A mathematical model describing the behavior of particulate Pu in the lower atmosphere is proposed which accounts for particles settling or impinging on the earth's surface as well as particle re-entrainment or resuspension. The assumptions used and system of equations derived are discussed. (LCL)
