Geologic Analysis of Priority Basins for Exploration and Drilling

Description: There has been a substantial decline in both exploratory drilling and seismic field crew activity in the United States over the last 10 years, due primarily to the declining price of oil. To reverse this trend and to preserve the entrepreneurial independent operator, the U.S. DOE is attempting to encourage hydrocarbon exploration activities in some of the under exploited regions of the United States. This goal is being accomplished by conducting broad regional reviews of potentially prospective… more

Correlation of producing Fruitland Formation coals within the western outcrop and coalbed methane leakage on the Southern Ute Reservation

Description: The Colorado Geological Survey and Southern Ute Indian Tribe proposed to determine the cause of several gas seeps which are occurring on the western outcrop of the coalbed methane producing Fruitland Formation on the Southern Ute Indian Reservation. Correlation between outcrop coals and subsurface coals was necessary to determine seep source in the northern part of the study area. Subsurface studies include structure and net coal isopach maps, stratigraphy was cross-sections, production maps, a… more

Regional Hydrology of the Dolores River Basin, Eastern Paradox Basin, Colorado and Utah

Description: From introduction: The purpose of the investigation was to compile and interpret available hydrologic data, with principal emphasis on the hydrologic relation of the water resources with respect to the salt deposits, in order to serve as a basis for more detailed evaluations of potential repository sites.

Coal Resources of the Fabius-Flat Rock Area, Jackson Countym Alabama

Description: Report issued by the Bureau of Mines discussing studies conducted on the coal resources of the Flat-Rock area of Jackson County, Alabama. As stated in the introduction, "an investigation was planned to determine the extent, quality, and economic minability of coal deposits in Alabama reasonably close to ample fresh water sources that might be available for possible thermal electric power-plants" (p. 1). This report includes tables, maps, illustrations, and photographs.

Consumption of Slab Zinc in the United States by Industries, Grades, and Geographic Divisions, 1940-45: Including a Summary of Consumption Since 1900

Description: Report issued by the U.S. Bureau of Mines discussing the U.S. slab-zinc consumption between the years of 1940-1945. As stated in the introduction, "this information circular summarized basic data collected for many years by the Bureau of Mines, but in particular presents for the 1940-45 period details derived from the comprehensive slab zinc consumption survey inaugurated in 1940" (p. 3). The different uses for slab zinc are presented. This report includes maps, tables, and illustrations.

Operation of a Public Geologic Core and Sample Repository in Houstion, Texas

Description: The Bureau of Economic Geology's Houston Research Center (HRC) is well established as a premier regional research center for geologic research serving not only Houston, but geoscientists from around Texas, the U. S., and even the world. As reported in the FY05 and FY06 technical progress reports to the DOE, the HRC provides a state-of-the-art core viewing facility, two fully equipped conference rooms, and a comprehensive technical library, all available for public use. In addition, the HRC curr… more

Energy Partitioning of Seismic Waves in Fractured Rocks

Description: Advances in locating and characterizes fractures in oil and gas reservoirs, and at waste isolation sites from seismic surveys requires improved interpretation methods. Experimental and theoretical results from this work have lead to an understanding of diagnostic signatures of energy that is partitioned into body waves and guided modes by fractures. Compressional waves and shear waves (i.e., shear waves with particle motion perpendicular to the fracture plane) are sensitive to changes in shear … more

Mechanical properties and modeling of seal-forming lithologies. Technical progress report No. 3, March 15, 1992--June 14, 1993

Description: Specific goals and accomplishments of this research include: (1) The evaluation of models of salt diaper ascent that involve either power law, dislocation creep as determined experimentally by Horseman et al. (1993) or linear, fluid-assisted creep as reported by Spiers et al. (1988, 1990, 1992). We have compared models assuming these two, experimentally evaluated flow laws and examined the predictions they make regarding diaper incubation periods, ascent velocities, deviatoric stresses and stra… more

Use of Cutting-Edge Horizontal and Underbalanced Drilling Technologies and Subsurface Seismic Techniques to Explore, Drill and Produce Reservoired Oil and Gas from the Fractured Monterey Below 10,000 ft in the Santa Maria Basin of California

Description: This project was undertaken to demonstrate that oil and gas can be drilled and produced safely and economically from a fractured Monterey reservoir in the Santa Maria Basin of California by employing horizontal wellbores and underbalanced drilling technologies. Two vertical wells were previously drilled in this area with heavy mud and conventional completions; neither was commercially productive. A new well was drilled by the project team in 2004 with the objective of accessing an extended leng… more

A range-to-target algorithm for a continuous-wave ground penetrating radar

Description: Many geologic situations of interest to oil and gas exploration, and to enhanced recover methods, occur in media whose conductivity is too large to permit the use of pulsed GPRs because of severe dispersion. A continuous-wave radar is not affected by dispersion, and can use the round-trip phase, rather than time, to give an estimate of range. In this paper a range to target algorithms is developed for targets which exhibit a crude hyperbolic phase response. This new algorithm minimizes a differ… more
