A Parallel Controls Software Approach for PEP II: AIDA & Matlab Middle Layer

Description: The controls software in use at PEP II (Stanford Control Program - SCP) had originally been developed in the eighties. It is very successful in routine operation but due to its internal structure it is difficult and time consuming to extend its functionality. This is problematic during machine development and when solving operational issues. Routinely, data has to be exported from the system, analyzed offline, and calculated settings have to be reimported. Since this is a manual process, it is … more

Combination of artificial intelligence and procedural language programs in a computer application system supporting nuclear reactor operations

Description: A computer application system is described which provides nuclear reactor power plant operators with an improved decision support system. This system combines traditional computer applications such as graphics display with artificial intelligence methodologies such as reasoning and diagnosis so as to improve plant operability. State and data techniques for control of discontinuous systems

Description: This paper describes a technique for structured analysis and design of automated control systems. The technique integrates control of continuous and discontinuous nuclear power plant subsystems and components. A hierarchical control system with distributed intelligence follows from applying the technique. Further, it can be applied to all phases of control system design. For simplicity, the example used in the paper is limited to phase 1 design (basic automatic control action), in which no main… more

Concepts and Techniques: Active Electronics and Computers in Safety-Critical Accelerator Operation

Description: The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) under construction at Brookhaven National Laboratory, requires an extensive Access Control System to protect personnel from Radiation, Oxygen Deficiency and Electrical hazards. In addition, the complicated nature of operation of the Collider as part of a complex of other Accelerators necessitates the use of active electronic measurement circuitry to ensure compliance with established Operational Safety Limits. Solutions were devised which permit the us… more

Improving Control System Cyber-State Awareness using Known Secure Sensor Measurements

Description: Abstract—This paper presents design and simulation of a low cost and low false alarm rate method for improved cyber-state awareness of critical control systems - the Known Secure Sensor Measurements (KSSM) method. The KSSM concept relies on physical measurements to detect malicious falsification of the control systems state. The KSSM method can be incrementally integrated with already installed control systems for enhanced resilience. This paper reviews the previously developed theoretical KSSM… more

Reliable software systems via chains of object models with provably correct behavior

Description: This work addresses specification and design of reliable safety-critical systems, such as nuclear reactor control systems. Reliability concerns are addressed in complimentary fashion by different fields. Reliability engineers build software reliability models, etc. Safety engineers focus on prevention of potential harmful effects of systems on environment. Software/hardware correctness engineers focus on production of reliable systems on the basis of mathematical proofs. The authors think that … more

Digital control systems in nuclear power plants: Failure information, modeling concepts, and applications

Description: This report briefly describes some current applications of advanced computerized digital display and control systems at US commercial nuclear power plants and presents the results of a literature search that was made to gather information on the reliability of these systems. Both hardware and software reliability were addressed in this review. Only limited failure rate information was found, with the chemical process industry being the primary source of information on hardware failure rates and… more

Lessons from the SLC for future LC control systems

Description: The SLC control system is the dynamic result of a number of forces. The most obvious force is the functional requirements of the SLC itself, but other forces are history, budget, people, available technology, etc. The plan of this paper is to describe the critical functional requirements of the SLC which caused significant development of the control system. I have tried to focus on functional requirements as a driver, and I will describe some solutions which we have implemented to satisfy those… more

Validation of the supervisory portion of a distributed fault tolerant control system

Description: The supervisory portion of a distributed fault tolerant control system (DFTCS) is responsible for managing redundancy, ensuring consistent control, and recovering from failures. Such software poses a unique set of challenges for validation testing. A test environment for such validation is described in this paper. Data has been collected on a total of 1000 test hours involving 2 million control actions and 700,000 randomly injected single and multiple faults. No anomalous behavior has been obse… more

A short report on voltage-to-frequency conversion for HISTRAP RF system tuning control loops

Description: One of the requirements of the HISTRAP RF accelerating system is that the frequency of the accelerating voltage for the cavity must keep in step with the change in the magnetic field. As the energy of the particle increases, the magnetic field is increased to keep the radius of the particle orbit constant. At the same time, the frequency of the electric field must be changed to insure that it is synchronized with the angular movement of the particle. So we need to generate the frequency of the … more

Description: External contractors are developing the local cooling and vacuum control systems for the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) linac. Soon these systems will be integrated into the facility-wide controls system. Allen-Bradley Logix5000 series programmable controllers, populated with appropriate input/output modules, were selected as the local controllers. These controllers will be interfaced to the facility-wide control system via VME systems with PowerPC processors running the Wind River VxWorks ope… more

A control system upgrade of the spear synchrotron and injector

Description: The SPEAR electron synchrotron is an old and venerable facility with a history of great physics. When this storage ring was converted to serve as a full-time synchrotron light source, it was evident that the facility was due for an overhaul of its control system. Outdated hardware interfaces, custom operator interfaces, and the control computer itself were replaced with off-the-shelf distributed intelligent controllers and networked X-workstations. However, almost all applications and control f… more

Comparison of Automatic Control Systems

Description: This report deals with a reciprocal comparison of an automatic pressure control, an automatic rpm control, an automatic temperature control, and an automatic directional control. It shows the difference between the "faultproof" regulator and the actual regulator which is subject to faults, and develops this difference as far as possible in a parallel manner with regard to the control systems under consideration. Such as analysis affords, particularly in its extension to the faults of the actual… more
