Report on the MHD performance demonstration experiment, October 1, 1977-September 30, 1978

Description: The Arnold Engineering Development Center (ALDC) has been under contract since December 1973 to modify existing equipment and to design, fabricate, and install new hardware to perform an MHD Performance Demonstration Experiment. The objective of the experiment is to demonstrate that a generator simulating a commercial-sized device can convert 16 to 18 percent of the available thermal energy into electrical power. This report described fabrication, installation, and testing of hardware for this … more

Heat transfer including particle and gas radiation in subsonic MHD diffuser-II

Description: Heat transfer in subsonic MHD diffusers, by convection and by gas and slag particle radiation, is analyzed by simultaneously solving the radiation transport equation and the quasi-three-dimensional gasdynamic equations. The efficiency factors for extinction and scattering by particles are calculated from the Mie theory. For a reference diffuser geometry, the heat transfer by convection is found to be 25 MW, and the radiative heat transfer varies from 44 MW to 79 MW, depending on the rate of ash… more

University of Tennessee Space Institute. Quarterly technical progress report, April-June 1983

Description: The major activities discussed in this quarterly report are concerned with the initiation of testing in the DOE Coal Fired Flow Facility in the LMF1D test series. This test series is designed to provide basic data on seed/slag interaction as a function of diffuser exit temperature and slag carryover rate for the coal fired MHD system with slag screen installed. During the quarter two shakedown tests and three tests in the test series were conducted. Data is reported on the flow train performanc… more

Conceptual design description for the tritium recovery system for the US ITER Li sub 2 O/Be water cooled blanket

Description: The tritium recovery system for the US ITER Li{sub 2}O/Be water cooled blanket processes two separate helium purge streams to recovery tritium from the Li{sub 2}O zones and the Be zones of the blanket, to process the waste products, and to recirculate the helium back to the blanket. The components are selected to minimize the tritium inventory of the recovery system, and to minimize waste products. The system is robust to either an increase in the tritium release rate or to an in-leak of water … more

Tritium experiments on components for fusion fuel processing at the Tritium Systems Test Assembly

Description: Under a collaborative agreement between US and Japan, two tritium processing components, a palladium diffuser and a ceramic electrolysis cell have been tested with tritium for application to a Fuel Cleanup System (FCU) for plasma exhaust processing at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. The fundamental characteristics, compatibility with tritium, impurities effects with tritium, and long-term behavior of the components, were studied over a three year period. Based on these studies, an integrate… more

Heat recovery and seed recovery development project: preliminary design report (PDR)

Description: The preliminary design and performance characteristics are described of the 20 MWt heat recovery and seed recovery (HRSR) system to be fabricated, installed, and evaluated to provide a technological basis for the design of commercial size HRSR systems for coal-fired open-cycle MHD power plants. The system description and heat and material balances, equipment description and functional requirements, controls, interfacing systems, and operation and maintenance are detailed. Appendices include: (1… more

Ocean thermal energy conversion power system development-I. Phase I. Preliminary design report. Volume 1. Final report

Description: The results of a conceptual and preliminary design study of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) closed loop ammonia power system modules performed by Lockheed Missiles and Space Company, Inc. (LMSC) are presented. This design study is the second of 3 tasks in Phase I of the Power System Development-I Project. The Task 2 objectives were to develop: 1) conceptual designs for a 40 to 50-MW(e) closed cycle ammonia commercial plant size power module whose heat exchangers are immersed in seawater … more

Test Program for High Efficiency Gas Turbine Exhaust Diffuser

Description: This research relates to improving the efficiency of flow in a turbine exhaust, and thus, that of the turbine and power plant. The Phase I SBIR project demonstrated the technical viability of “strutlets” to control stalls on a model diffuser strut. Strutlets are a novel flow-improving vane concept intended to improve the efficiency of flow in turbine exhausts. Strutlets can help reduce turbine back pressure, and incrementally improve turbine efficiency, increase power, and reduce greenhouse gas… more
