Low-level radioactive waste from nuclear power generating stations: Characterization, classification and assessment of activated metals and waste streams

Description: Since the enactment of 10 CFR Part 61, additional difficult-to-measure long-lived radionuclides, not specified in Tables 1 2 of Part 61, have been identified (e.g., [sup 108m]Ag, [sup 93]Mo, [sup 36]Cl, [sup 10]Be, [sup 113m]Cd, [sup 121m]Sn, [sup 126]Sn, [sup 93m]Nb) that may be of concern in certain types of waste. These nuclides are primarily associated with activated metal and perhaps other nuclear power low-level waste (LLW) being sent to disposal facilities. The concentration of a radionu… more

What can HELIOS tell us on phase transition of nuclear matter

Description: Transverse energy (E/sub t/) distributions and P/sub t/ spectra of negative particles and photons measured by the HELIOS experiment in 200 GeVN and 60 GeVN oxygen-nucleus reactions are presented. The E/sub t/ distributions are compared to a geometrical parametrization and a Montereverse arrowCarlo calculation, particle spectra to the proton-nucleus reaction case. The comparisons show that yet the results can be understood without assuming quark-gluon plasma formation. A discussion is made based… more

Processing and properties of silver-clad Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O wires and tapes

Description: TlBa{sub 2}Ca{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub x} and Tl{sub 2}Ba{sub 2}Ca{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub x} powders were synthesized, loaded into Ag tubes, and worked into wires and tapes by drawing and rolling. All processing outside of furnaces was in a dry-N{sub 2} glovebox. All heat treatments were performed in O{sub 2}. The Ag-clad wires fabricated from these powders exhibited onset of superconductivity at {approx}118 K and critical current densities at 77K of 2{times}10{sup 3} to 4{times}10{sup 3} A/cm{sup 2}. more

Doppler broadening effect to neutron resonance cross sections for Ag, AgCl, and Ag/sub 2/O. [Yield, Debye temperature]

Description: The neutron capture yield of the 16.3 eV resonance in /sup 107/Ag was measured, using targets of Ag metal, AgCl and Ag/sub 2/O at room, liquid N/sub 2/ and He temperatures. The effective temperature T' defined by Lamb for weak binding, and subsequently the Debye temperature theta/sub D/, were extracted for each case by a least squares shape fit. For Ag metal the measured theta/sub D/ values agree with both the simple Debye theory and a prediction of the Ag lattice dynamics. The theta/sub D/ val… more

Fluxless laser soldering for electronic packaging

Description: Conventional soldering typically requires the use of reactive fluxes to promote wetting. The resulting flux residues are removed primarily with halogenated or chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) solvents. With the mandated phaseout of CFCs by the year 2000, there has been a concentrated effort to develop alternative, environmentally compatible manufacturing and cleaning technologies that will satisfy the restrictions placed on CFCs, but still yield high quality product. Sandia National Laboratories is cur… more

Radiolysis studies on reactive intermediates. Technical progress report, November 1, 1978-November 1, 1979

Description: Analysis methods for electron spin echo modulation patterns were improved and were used to determine the silver atom solvation structure in water and methanol and the geometry of solvated electrons in organic matrices. New evidence for presolvated electrons in polar matrices was obtained, and the mechanism of electron solvation in pure and in mixed matrices was clarified.

Fission product plateout and liftoff in the MHTGR primary system: A review

Description: A review is presented of the technical basis for predicting radioactivity release resulting from depressurization of an MHTGR primary system. Consideration is restricted to so called dry events with no involvement of the steam system. The various types of deposition mechanisms effective for iodine, cesium, strontium, and silver are discussed in terms of their chemical characteristics and the nature of the materials in the primary system. Emphasis is given to iodine behavior, including means for… more

Trace multielement analysis of reactor moderator water: Simultaneous determination of copper, gold, silver, and mercury using differential pulse stripping voltammetry

Description: A rapid, inexpensive trace multi-element analysis of reactor moderator heavy water is described. Samples were analyzed for copper, silver, gold, and mercury at the low ppb level using Differential Pulse Stripping Voltametry (DPSV). These ions are kept below 25 ppb to avoid possible vessel corrosion. A high concentration of aluminum and iron in the samples prevented analysis by ICP spectroscopy. The DPSV method also avoided volatizing highly tritiated samples. Differential Pulse Stripping Voltam… more

Investigation of the potential of silica-bonded macrocyclic ligands for separation of metal ions from nuclear waste. [Macrocyclic ligands covalently bonded to silica gel]

Description: This report describes the testing of some novel separations materials known as SuperLig{trademark} materials for their ability to separate efficiently and selectively certain metal ions from a synthetic, nonradioactive nuclear waste solution. The materials, developed and patented by IBC Advanced Technologies, are highly selective macrocyclic ligands that have been covalently bonded to silica gel. The SuperLig{trademark} materials that were tested are: (1) SuperLig{trademark} 601 for barium (Ba{… more

Barstow heliostat mirror glass characterization

Description: The technical analysis performed on the special run of low iron float glass procured from the Ford Glass Division for the ten megawatt solar thermal/electric pilot power plant to be constructed at Barstow, California is discussed. The topics that are addressed include the optical properties and the relative durability of the glass. Two optical parameters, solar transmittance and optical flatness, were measured as referenced in the specification and found to be better than the stated tolerances.… more

Photodissociation and spectroscopy of gas phase bimetallic clusters

Description: Focus of the research program is the study of gas phase metal clusters for modeling fundamental interactions on metal surfaces. We characterize the chemical bonding between component atoms in clusters as well as the bonding in adsorption on cluster surfaces. Electronic spectra, vibrational frequencies and bond dissociation energies are measured for both neutral and ionized clusters with laser/mass spectrometry techniques. Small bimetallic cluster cations containing Bi/Cr, Bi/Fe, Sn/Bi, and Pb/S… more

Conceptual design description for the tritium recovery system for the US ITER Li sub 2 O/Be water cooled blanket

Description: The tritium recovery system for the US ITER Li{sub 2}O/Be water cooled blanket processes two separate helium purge streams to recovery tritium from the Li{sub 2}O zones and the Be zones of the blanket, to process the waste products, and to recirculate the helium back to the blanket. The components are selected to minimize the tritium inventory of the recovery system, and to minimize waste products. The system is robust to either an increase in the tritium release rate or to an in-leak of water … more
