Resonances in the [Sigma]NN system

Description: We first review certain unique aspects of few-body [Alpha]- hypernuclei and then explore the physics of [summation] threshold in few-body elastic scattering and reactions. In particular, we discuss a predicted enhancement in the [Alpha]d cross section near the [summation]NN threshold in terms of poles in the [Tau]=0YNN amplitude. A brief discussion of anticipated poles in the [Tau]=1 amplitudes is also given.

Studies of relativistic heavy ion collisions

Description: We expect to complete the observations of lepton pairs with incident protons on proton and deuteron targets. The early results indicate an important fraction due to processes other than bremsstrahlung. Further high statistic runs on heavier targets (Ca on Ca) are scheduled for 1992 and possible runs for heavier ions. We expect to participate in the running and analysis for these experiments and help prepare for upgrades of the DLS system. The Hopkins group is an active member of a collaboration… more

The Fermilab Polarized Beam Facility

Description: A description of the Fermilab 200-GeV/c polarized beam is presented, including the production, transport, and spin rotation of the polarized protons and antiprotons. The momentum and polarization of each beam particle is measured by a beam-tagging system. Verification of the beam polarization and of the beam-tagging method is given by two polarimeters. A brief summary of the E-704 experimental program using the polarized beam is also presented. 7 refs., 7 figs.

K$sup -$p $Yields$ $Sigma$$sup 0$$pi$$sup 0$ cross section between 1575 and 1710-MeV cm energy range with detection of gammas

Description: From conference on baryon resonances; West Lafayette, Indiana, USA (20 Apr 1973). A study was made, with good gamma detection, of the individual channels that contribute to the reactions K/sup -/p yields LAMBDA neutrals in the K/sup -/ momentum range from 525 to 820 MeV/c. The SIGMA /sup o/ pi /sup o/ cross se ction is considered which is difficult to obtain without gamma detection (e.g. in a H/sub 2/ bubble chamber). Only events with all decay gammas detected are used for analysis. The results… more

Production of strange clusters in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Description: We address a number of issues related to the production of strangeness in high energy heavy ion collisions, including the possibility that stable states of multi-strange hyperonic or quark matter might exist, and the prospects that such objects may be created and detected in the laboratory. We make use of events generated by the cascade code ARC to estimate the rapidity distribution dN/dy of strange clusters produced in Si+Au and Au+Au collisions at AGS energies. These calculations are performe… more

Hyperon and hypernuclear physics with intense beams

Description: A brief examination of progress in the study of hypernuclear physics and the hyperon-nucleon interaction is presented. The use of ..lambda..-hypernuclei in the study of conventional (nonstrange) nuclei is explored. The status of the hyperon-nucleon force problem is reviewed. Anecdotal results are discussed for baryon numbers 4 and 13. ..sigma..-hypernuclei are discussed. Production of S = -2 hypernuclei is mentioned.

V sup 0 Production with 14. 5 GeV/c Silicon Beams

Description: This talk deals with {Lambda}, K{sub s}{sup 0} and {bar {Lambda}} production with 14.5 GeV/c Silicon beams. Why study {Lambda}{sup 0} production Because the study of strangeness is an important part of the search for Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). Many models predict an enhancement of strangeness in a QGP as compared to the amount of strangeness produced in a superposition of nucleon-nucleon interactions. The amount of enhancement varies from model to model. Even if no QGP is detected at AGS energie… more

Polarization in inclusive lambda production

Description: At high energies the reaction p + N ..-->.. ..lambda../sup 0/ + X yields ..lambda../sup 0/s which are strongly polarized. The behavior of this polarization should give information about quark production mechanisms. The inclusive ..lambda../sup 0/ polarization is also compared with anti ..lambda../sup 0/, and proton polarization in the fragmentation region of the incident proton at Fermilab energies.

lambda. production in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilations at 29 GeV

Description: This paper presents measurements of the inclusive production cross sections of ..lambda.. baryons in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilations at ..sqrt..s = 29 GeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 256 pb/sup -1/ collected with the High Resolution Spectrometer at PEP. Comparisons are made to the predictions of the Lund model. The data are well described using a strange diquark suppression parameter, (us/ud)/(s/d), of 0.89 +- 0.10/sub -0.16//sup +0.56/, and the measured ..lambda.… more

Asymmetry in the angular distribution of inclusive A baryons from e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilations at. sqrt. s = 29 GeV

Description: The forward-backward asymmetry A expected from the ..gamma.. - Z/sup 0/ interference term in the process e/sup +/e/sup -/ ..-->.. q anti q is observed in the lab production angular distribution of high momentum A baryons. The data were collected with the High Resolution Spectrometer at PEP and an integrated luminosity of 256 pb/sup -1/ at ..sqrt..s = 29 GeV was used in the analysis. The asymmetry is seen to increase with the fractional energy z = 2E/..sqrt..s of the A due to the decreasing pres… more

Hyperon polarization: An experimental overview

Description: The fact that inclusively produced hyperons are produced with significant polarization was first discovered at Fermilab about seventeen years ago. This and subsequent experiments showed that [Lambda][degree] were produced polarized while [bar [Lambda] [degree]] had no polarization in the same kinematical region. This set the stage for many experiments which showed that most hyperons are produced polarized. Recent Fermilab experiments have showed that this phenomena is even more complex than pre… more

Polarization in inclusive production at Brookhaven

Description: At Brookhaven, ..lambda..'s are produced polarized in p-p interactions perpendicular to a horizontal production plane defined by proton-unit vector x ..lambda..-unit vector with their spins pointing down roughly twice as often as up, for a 1 GeV/c transverse ..lambda.. momentum. Such a large effect must indicate a simplicity in the underlying dynamics of particle production, even at low transverse momentum. Four BNL experiments are discussed in the context of experiments done at other energies … more

Search for the H particle: Its production and weak decay

Description: Jaffe has suggested that a six-quark state with the flavor content of two-lambda hyperons with all spins coupled to zero, the H particle, may be bound against strong decay. This particle has become the object of extensive discussion in the literature and of several experimental searches. We report here the present status of an investigation of the reaction: ({Xi}{minus},d){sub atom}{yields} H + n in experiment E-813 at the BNL-AGS and describe plans for future running in 1992.

Studies of particle interactions in bubble chamber, spark chambers and counter experiments. Annual progress report

Description: During the past six years we have carried out and planned experiments which predominantly studied the production and decay of particles containing charmed quarks. A series of photoproduction and neutron production experiments started with the very early observation of the production of J/psi by neutrons and by photons at Fermilab. From subsequent experiments using these neutral beams and the basic detecting system, we have reported results on the photoproduction of the ..lambda../sub c/ charmed… more
