Low cost hydrogen/novel membrane technology for hydrogen separation from synthesis gas, Phase 1. [Poly(methyl pentene) and poly(etherimide)]

Description: This report summarizes the development of polymer membranes useful in the separation of hydrogen from coal-derived synthesis gas during period 1 October 1985--30 September 1986. During the last year several high performance membranes were developed for the separation of hydrogen from nitrogen and carbon monoxide. The heat resistant resins poly(methyl pentene) (TPX), Mitsui Petrochemical Industries, New York, NY and poly(etherimide) (ULTEM, General Electric, Pittsfield, MA) have been selected as… more

Cold flow model test plan. Task IX. Technical support. Industrial low-Btu gas demonstration-plant program. (Deliverable No. 43)

Description: A cold-flow model is being built to gather information for appropriately designing the venturi and the bottom section of the gasifier to attain the required ash discharge rate in the demonstration plant. Ancillary tasks will investigate the effect of different feed locations and different means of injecting fines. A model is necessary because the operating conditions of the pilot plant gasifier do not permit the type of testing required to meet the above objectives. The pilot plant gasifier has… more

GAUGE FOR MEASURING BOW OF TUBES

Description: A mechanical gage was designed to measure the bow over any one-foot length of long cylindrical material. The gage was used successfully for measuring bow in components of tubular fuel elements at the Savannah River Laboratory. (auth)

Theoretical understanding of charm decays

Description: A detailed description of charm decays has emerged. The various concepts involved are sketched. Although this description is quite successful in reproducing the data the chapter on heavy flavour decays is far from closed. Relevant questions like on th real strength of weak annihilation, Penguin operators, etc. are still unanswered. Important directions in future work, both on the experimental and theoretical side are identified.

Efficient forward conversion in a Raman generator

Description: Stimulated Raman scattering of an XeCl laser at 308 nm in a high pressure H/sub 2/ cell shows anomalously high conversion into first Stokes (S1) when a pumping geometry with a Fresnel number near unity is used. Specifically a quantum efficiency of 88% is obtained into S1. Comparison with a plane-wave model indicates that a theory including diffraction and 4-wave mixing may be necessary to understand the anomalous holdoff of the second Stokes component. 10 references.

Wolf Point Substation, Roosevelt County, Montana

Description: The Western Area Power Administration (Western), an agency of the United States Department of Energy, is proposing to construct the 115-kV Wolf Point Substation near Wolf Point in Roosevelt County, Montana (Figure 1). As part of the construction project, Western's existing Wolf Point Substation would be taken out of service. The existing 115-kV Wolf Point Substation is located approximately 3 miles west of Wolf Point, Montana (Figure 2). The substation was constructed in 1949. The existing Wolf… more

Measuring the mass and width of the Z sup 0 : The status of the energy spectrometers

Description: The Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) located at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) collides electrons and positrons produced in the linear accelerator pulse by pulse. The object is to produce collisions energetic enough to produce the heavy intermediate vector boson, the Z{sup 0}. An essential component of the SLC physics program is the precise knowledge of the center-of-mass energy of each interaction. We measure the energy of each collision by using two energy spectrometers. The spec… more

Developments in sensitivity theory

Description: A review of recent developments in sensitivity theory is presented with an emphasis on (a) extensions to new areas such as thermal hydraulics, reactor depletion, multi-constraint and extrema problems, and (b) recent mathematical refinements to and extensions of the basic theory. The diverse new areas of application are discussed from a unified theoretical viewpoint based on nonlinear functional analysis. Several new applications of sensitivity theory are presented for problems in constrained re… more

Recent experimental studies on Hadron showers produced in high energy muon-nucleus interactions

Description: The Fermilab Tevatron Muon Experiment has analyzed the hadron showers of events resulting from the scattering of a muon beam (< E{sub {mu}} > = 490 GeV) off H{sub 2}, D{sub 2} and Xenon targets. The topics which will be discussed are: (1) space-time evolution of the hadronization process; (2) leading hadron distributions in the shadowing region; (3) rates and characteristics of 3-jet events. 23 refs.

Processing needs and constraints: neutron data processing

Description: New applications for processed data and increased accuracy requirements have generated needs for change in the Evaluated Nuclear Data Files (ENDF). Some constraints must be removed to allow this growth to take place, but other strong constraints must remain to protect existing users.

Two-photon couplings of quarkonia with arbitrary angular momenta

Description: The observation of a large {gamma}{gamma} width for the {sup 1}D{sub 2} q{bar q} state {pi}{sub 2}(1670) suggests that the {gamma}{gamma} couplings of many orbitally-excited light q{bar q} states may be experimentally accessible. In this talk we present {gamma}{gamma} helicity amplitudes for q{bar q} states with general angular momenta {sup 1}l{sub j} and {sup 3}l{sub j}, and note some relations and selection rules that may be useful in spectroscopic classification of orbital excitations. 14 re… more

Methods and techniques of NDA (nondestructive assay)

Description: Nondestructive assay (NDA) refers to techniques and instruments developed to measure nuclear materials in the many forms in which they occur throughout the fuel cycle. These techniques were first developed to support nuclear safeguards inspections and nuclear material accountability; they are also used extensively for process and quality control. Most accountability measurements are based on analytical chemistry and require that a sample be drawn and analyzed destructively. Destructive analysis… more

STUDIES OF THE SCINTILLATION PROCESS IN CsI(Tl)

Description: The scintillation response of CsI(Tl) crystals, having various thallium contents, was measured for excitation of the crystals by monoenergetic gamma rays, protons, and alpha particles. The investi gation was made to provide a test of some of the features of a theoretical model of the scintillation process in thallium-activated alkali iodides proposed by Murray and Meyer. In order to insure that the results obtained in this program would provide a critical test of the scintillation model, specia… more

Study of rock-water-nuclear waste interactions in the Pasco Basin, Washington: Part II. Preliminary equilibrium-step simulations of basalt diagenesis

Description: Interactions between a large number of complex chemical and physical processes have resulted in significant changes in the Pasco Basin hydrochemical system since emplacement of the first basalt flow. In order to perform preliminary simulations of the chemical evolution of this system, certain simplifying assumptions and procedures were adopted and a computer model which operates on the principal of local equilibrium was used for the mass transfer calculations. Significant uncertainties exist in… more

Tritium in fusion reactor components

Description: When tritium is used in a fusion energy experiment or reactor, several implications affect and usually restrict the design and operation of the system and involve questions of containment, inventory, and radiation damage. Containment is expected to be particularly important both for high-temperature components and for those components that are prone to require frequent maintenance. Inventory is currently of major significance in cases where safety and environmental considerations limit the expe… more
