Manual of Operations for the S-50 Plant

Description: It is recognized that the S-50 plant operations are far from standardized and therefore any manual will require continual revision to keep it up to date. Even during the period of writing this first edition, many changes occurred and were incorporated in the manual. Such revisions could delay indefinitely the issuance of the manual and it was felt that in its present form it could be useful in the training of new plant personnel. The specific purpose of the process employed by the Ferclave Corp… more

A Note on the Kinetics of Homogeneous Piles

Description: Abstract. In investigating stability of a homogeneous pile it has been customary to assume that the production of bubbles follows the production of power instantaneously. Here we investigate the implications of introduction of an intermediate dissolved gas stage under two hypotheses on the formation of bubbles from this dissolved gas. It is seen that this additional stage tends to make the pile unstable.

The corrosion of aluminum in dilute solutions: laboratory studies

Description: After it had been decided that aluminum was to be used as a corrosion-resistant material with good heat transfer properties, it was desired to determine the operating conditions to be used in the water-cooled Handford plant in order to avoid danger of corrosion penetration of thin aluminum parts. The studies here reported were undertaken with the object of determining these conditions by investigating the effects of all the known variables which might influence the corrosion behavior of aluminu… more

PERFORMANCE OF CHIPPED MAGNESIUM VERSUS HAMMERMILLED MAGNESIUM IN THE BOMB REDUCTION OF TETRAFLUORIDE. PART I

Description: The O. Hommel Company, of Carnegie, Penna., supplied Mallinckrodt Chemical Works with three types of Mg chips or powder (Type 84, 85B, and 87B) formed by machining Mg ingots. This material was tested and compared with standard New England Lime Mg in a series of reduction runs. A new type of powder (Type 93) developed by the O. Hommel Company during the course of the first experiment was also sert to Mallinckrodt Chemical Works foi preliminary testing. As this was superior to the other tynes tes… more

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of Control-Surface Characteristics 22: Medium and Large Aerodynamic Balances of Two Nose Shapes and a Plain Overhang Used With a 0.20-Airfoil-Chord Flap on an NACA 0009 Airfoil

Description: "Blunt-nose and elliptical-nose overhangs of 0.35 and 0.50 flap chord and a plain overhang on a flap having a chord of 0.20 airfoil chord have been tested in two-dimensional flow on an NACA 0009 airfoil. The results of the tests are presented as aerodynamic section characteristics for several flap deflections with the gap at the flap nose sealed or unsealed. Tests were made also to determine the effectiveness of a tab of 0.20 flap chord on the plain sealed flap and on a sealed flap having an el… more

The development and application of high-critical-speed nose inlets

Description: From Summary: "An analysis of the nose-inlet shapes developed in previous investigations to represent the optimum from the standpoint of critical speed has shown that marked similarity exists between the nondimensional profiles of inlets which have widely different proportions and critical speeds. With the nondimensional similarity of such profiles established, the large differences in the critical speeds of these nose inlets must be a function of their proportions. An investigation was underta… more

The Effect of Inlet Pressure and Temperature on the Efficiency of a Single Stage Impulse Turbine Having an 11.0-Inch Pitch-Line Diameter Wheel

Description: Efficiency tests have been conducted on a single-stage impulse engine having an 11-inch pitch-line diameter wheel with inserted buckets and a fabricated nozzle diaphragm. The tests were made to determine the effect of inlet pressure, Inlet temperature, speed, and pressure ratio on the turbine efficiency. An analysis is presented that relates the effect of inlet pressure and temperature to the Reynolds number of the flow. The agreement between the analysis and the experimental data indicates tha… more
