The Glaciation of the Yellowstone Valley, North of the Park

Description: From outline: The present paper gives a detailed account of the glaciation of the Snowy mountains and of the upper valleys of the Yellowstone, whose deposits show an unusual phase of alpine glaciation. The evidence thus far gathered shows that a large body of ice, originating in the ice sheets of the Yellowstone National Park, pushed northward, filling the upper valleys of the Yellowstone and extending down that stream 36 miles north of the park boundary.

Map Showing Altitude of the Top of the Fox Hills-Lower Hell Creek Aquifer, Montana

Description: Introduction: In 1978 the U.S. Geological Survey began a 4-year study of aquifers in the northern Great Plains. The purpose of this map, which is a product of that study, is to show the altitude of the top of the Fox Hills-lower Hell Creek aquifer. Other maps show the total thickness (Feltis, 1982a). cumulative thickness of sandstone (Feltis, 1982b), and potentiometric surface of water (Levings, 1982) of the Fox Hills-lower Hell Creek aquifer. These maps are part of a series that describes the ā€¦ more

Suspended Sediment in Selected Streams of Southeastern Montana

Description: From purpose and scope: The purpose of this report is to summarize and evaluate fluvial-sediment data collected in the study area by the U.S. Geological Survey. The principal products of this report are sediment concentration and load statistics, sediment-transport curves, calculated mean annual sediment yields at selected stations, and an areal sediment-yield map. A secondary purpose is to describe sediment relationships between stations and basins and to identify environmental factors that arā€¦ more

Potential Effects of Surface Coal Mining on the Hydrology of the Greenleaf-Miller Area, Ashland Coal Field, Southeastern Montana

Description: From purpose and scope: The purpose of this study was to describe existing hydrologic systems, to obtain data on the water quality in the area, and to assess potential impacts of surface coal mining on local water resources. Specific objectives of the study were to: (1) Identify ground-water resources and use; (2) identify surface-water resources and runoff characteristics; (3) determine chemical quality of the ground-water resources; (4) identify probable impacts on existing water resources byā€¦ more
