Archaeological data as a basis for repository marker design

Description: This report concerns the development of a marking system for a nuclear waste repository which is very likely to survive for 10,000 years. In order to provide a background on the subject, and for the preliminary design presented in this report, a discussion is presented about the issues involved in human interference with the repository system and the communication of information. A separate chapter summarizes six ancient man-made monuments including: materials, effects of associated textual inf… more

Design report for an indirectly cooled 3-m diameter superconducting solenoid for the Fermilab Collider Detector Facility

Description: The Fermilab Collider Detector Facility (CDF) is a large detector system designed to study anti pp collisions at very high center of mass energies. The central detector for the CDF shown employs a large axial magnetic field volume instrumented with a central tracking chamber composed of multiple layers of cylindrical drift chambers and a pair of intermediate tracking chambers. The purpose of this system is to determine the trajectories, sign of electric charge, and momenta of charged particles … more

New-particle spectroscopy, quarkonium and gluonic mesons

Description: Recent experimental results on quarkonium and gluonic mesons are presented and discussed. Comparisons with theory are made. Quarkonium predictions seem to agree well with experiment. The question of the experimental verification of gluonic mesons is clouded by the difficulty of the theoretical interpretation.

Design of the magnetized muon shield for the prompt-neutrino facility

Description: The main technical challenge in the design of the prompt neutrino beam is the magnetized muon shield. Two satisfactory alternate designs have been developed for such a shield during this past year and the background muon fluxes have been calculated by three independent programs at Columbia, Fermilab, and MIT. The background muon fluxes have been calculated to be satisfactory in all of the detectors that might use the beam. In Section III of this report we describe in detail the three Monte Carl… more

First results from DELCO at PEP

Description: Preliminary results from DELCO are presented on several topics which utilize the particle identification capabilities of the detector: (1) we measure the Cabbibo angle in tau decays to be tan/sup 2/ theta/sub c/ = 0.08 +- 0.03 +- 0.04; (2) in the intermediate x (p/E/sub BEAM/) range, 0.2 < x < 0.55, the fraction of ..pi../sup + -/ relative to all charged particles is found to be approximately 60% and to show only a weak energy dependence; and (3) we observe a large D*/sup + -/ cross section rat… more

Shale-oil-recovery Systems Incorporating Ore Beneficiation. Final Report.

Description: This study analyzed the recovery of oil from oil shale by use of proposed systems which incorporate beneficiation of the shale ore (that is concentration of the kerogen before the oil-recovery step). The objective was to identify systems which could be more attractive than conventional surface retorting of ore. No experimental work was carried out. The systems analyzed consisted of beneficiation methods which could increase kerogen concentrations by at least four-fold. Potentially attractive lo… more

Utilization of geothermal heat in tropical fruit-drying process

Description: The power plant utilizes only the steam portion of the HGP-A well production. There are approximately 50,000 pounds per hour of 360/sup 0/F water produced (approximately 10 million Btu per hour) and the water is currently not used and is considered a waste. This tremendous resource could very well be used in applications such as food processing, food dehydration and other industrial processing that requires low-grade heat. One of the applications is examined, namely the drying of tropical fruit… more

Flavor-changing Z/sup 0/ decay

Description: Chapter I reviews the phenomenological situation. Simple estimates of various rates are also provided in order to convey the physical intuition necessary to guide one through the equations and numbers that follow. Chapter II presents technical aspects of the general flavor changing Z/sup 0/ decay calculation, with emphasis on the integration scheme used. Chapter III describes a number of nontrivial checks on the calculation that were performed. Chapter IV contains the entire general algebraic r… more

Analysis of radionuclide concentrations and movement patterns of Hanford-site mule deer

Description: From 1980 through 1982, the movements of 37 radio-collared mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) were monitored for periods of 3 to 17 months on the Handord Site in southcentral Washington. The objectives were to compare radionuclide concentrations in deer residing near the 200 Area waste management sites with concentrations in deer occupying areas remote from waste management sites and to document movement patterns of Hanford Site deer with particular emphasis on offsite movements. Simple nocturnal slope-flow data from the Rattlesnake Mountain site

Description: Detailed vertical profiles of the wind and temperture structure of nocturnal slope flows were measured at a site that is uniform in the cross-slope direction. The upper part of the slope closely approximates a simple, tilted plane. These measurements were made from three towers at different distances from the ridge crest, each of which extended through the local depth of the katabatic flow. The tower wind and temperature data from the four best cases of slope flow observed in 1980 and 1981 are … more

Safety analysis report for the Heavy-Element Facility (Building 251), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Description: A comprehensive safety analysis was performed on the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's Heavy Element Facility, Building 251. The purpose of the analysis was to evaluate the building and its operations in order to inform LLNL and the Department of Energy of the risks they assume at Building 251. This was done by examining all of the energy sources and matching them with the physical and administrative barriers that control, prevent, or mitigate their hazards. Risk was evaluated for each s… more

Application of the Green's function method to some nonlinear problems of an electron storage ring: Part 2, Checking the method by a quadrupole perturbation

Description: In the first part of this work I described a general approach to some storage ring problems. The basic concept and the main equations were developed there. The next natural step in this work should be an application of the developed technique to some particular nonlinear problem. Instead, I found it useful to apply the method to the case of a field gradient perturbation first. This happened to be plausible not only as a check of the method, but, more importantly, as a way to resolve several tro… more

Atomic and ionic spectrum lines below 2000A: hydrogen through argon

Description: A critical tabulation of observed spectral lines below 2000 angstroms has been prepared from the published literature up to July 1978. It is intended principally as an aid to those physicists and astronomers who deal with the spectra of highly stripped atoms. This report includes the first 18 elements, from hydrogen (including deuterium) through argon. The tabulation is divided into two main sections: the spectrum lines by spectrum, and a finding list. The entries for each element give the ioni… more

Ion-beam-driven electrostatic ion cyclotron instabilities

Description: We present results of numerical simulations on the electrostatic ion cyclotron instabilities driven by the ion beam parallel to the magnetic field. For the beam speed exceeding the thermal speed of background ions and the beam temperature much lower than the background ion temperature, it is found that the instability results in strong perpendicular heating and slowing down of parallel drift of the beam ions, leading to the saturation of the instability. Applications to plasma heating and space… more

High-energy physics. Progress report, March 1, 1982-February 28, 1983

Description: Considerable progress has been made in high-energy physics research on several fronts during the present contract year. Analysis of the data from ZGS polarized beam experiments E-460 and E-462 has continued and is nearing completion. This, along with our data from LAMPF E-504/505, will have considerable bearing on the question of dibaryon resonances. Work has continued on the project to accelerate polarized-proton beams in the Brookhaven AGS. One of our contributions to this project, the 200-Me… more
