45-day safety screen results for tank 241-C-204, auger samples 95-Aug-022 and 95-Aug-023

Description: Two auger samples from tank 241-C-204 (C-204) were received at the 222-S Laboratories and underwent safety screening analysis, consisting of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and total alpha activity. The three samples submitted to energetics determination by DSC exceeded the notification limit. As required by the Tank Characterization Plan, the appropriate notifications were made within 24 hours of official confirmation that the limit was exceeded. Seco… more

Access to the energy system network simulator (ESNS), via remote computer terminals. [BNL CDC 7600/6600 computer facility]

Description: The Energy System Network Simulator (ESNS) flow model is installed on the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) CDC 7600/6600 computer facility for access by off-site users. The method of access available to outside users is through a system called CDC-INTERCOM, which allows communication between the BNL machines and remote teletype terminals. This write-up gives a brief description of INTERCOM for users unfamiliar with this system and a step-by-step guide to using INTERCOM in order to access ES… more

Active Waste Materials Corrosion and Decontamination Tests

Description: Stainless steel alloys, 304L and 316L, were corrosion tested in representative radioactive samples of three actual Hanford tank waste solutions (Tanks AW-101, C-104, AN-107). Both the 304L and 316L exhibited good corrosion performance when immersed in boiling waste solutions. The maximum general corrosion rate was 0.015 mm/y (0.60 mils per year). Generally, the 304L had a slightly higher rate than the 316L. No localized attack was observed after 122 days of testing in the liquid phase, liquid/v… more

The Adsorption Of Uranium From Solutions By Activated Carbon

Description: Experimental results on the adsorption of U from solutions by activated C indicate that low pH values reduce the adsorption and that a marked change occurs in the adsorption of U(VI) at pH2. Under a given set of conditions the adsorption of U follows a typical Freundlich isotherm. The particle size of the charcoal affects the rate of adsorption but not the amount of U adsorbed at equilibrium. The temperature coefficient of adsorption is negligible, and the adsorption of U from uranyl solutions … more

Advanced Catalytic Hydrogenation Retrofit Reactor

Description: Industrial hydrogenation is often performed using a slurry catalyst in large stirred-tank reactors. These systems are inherently problematic in a number of areas, including industrial hygiene, process safety, environmental contamination, waste production, process operability and productivity. This program proposed the development of a practical replacement for the slurry catalysts using a novel fixed-bed monolith catalyst reactor, which could be retrofitted onto an existing stirred-tank reactor… more

Analysis of Boling's laser-damage morphology

Description: Boling observed that his total-internal-reflection laser-damage sites in glass closely resembled the scattering cross section for small (ka << 1), perfectly conducting sphere and suggested that a very small plasma formed and grew to a larger size, still with ka << 1 satisfied. Even with ka = 1, for which the cross section is different from that observed, the scattered field still is too small to explain the damage in terms of constructive interference between the incident- and scattered fields.… more

Analysis of data from a downhole oil/water separator field trial in east Texas.

Description: The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) National Petroleum Technology Office (NPTO) is interested in promoting new technologies that can produce oil and gas at a lower cost or with enhanced environmental protection at a reasonable cost. Several years ago, DOE became aware of a new technology for produced water management known as a downhole oil/water separator (or DOWS). A DOWS system separates oil from water at the bottom of a production well and injects the water directly to a disposal zone w… more
