18t Resistive Magnet Development. Conceptual Design Second Annual Report

Description: This report documents the work performed on a normal conducting magnet during fiscal year 1985. Emphasis, during the study, was on refinement of the structural design and optimization of the coil current density distribution for either maximum field generation or minimum power consumption. The results have shown that one can generate a 4.4 tesla field using 6.14 megawatts or 3.1 tesla at 1.43 megawatts. The structural design has been modified to stiffen the outer turn of the conductor. Description: Three 3Q120 magnets--representative of those in the AP 1 line--have been measured with a harmonics probe at MDTF at both low (0-48 A) and high (to >= 400 A). Accelerators for heavy ion fusion

Description: Large fusion devices will almost certainly produce net energy. However, a successful commercial fusion energy system must also satisfy important engineering and economic constraints. Assessment of the important radionuclides in nuclear waste

Description: The relative importance of the various radionuclides contained in nuclear waste has been assessed by consideration of (1) the quantity of each radionuclide present, (2) the Environmental Protection Agency`s release limits for radionuclides, (3) how retardation processes such as solubility and sorption affect radionuclie transport, and (4) the physical and chemical forms of radionuclides in the waste. Catalytic gasification of bagasse for the production of methanol

Description: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of catalytic gasification of bagasse to produce methanol. In previous studies, a catalytic steam gasification process was developed which converted wood to methanol synthesis gas in one step using nickel based catalysts in a fluid-bed gasifier. CDC field mapping device - ''ROTOTRACK''

Description: A field mapping device for the magnet of the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) was constructed. The device was used for extensive study of the CDF magnetic field distribution. The mechanical and electrical features of the device, as well as the data acquisition system and software, are described. The mechanical system was designed so that the errors on the position and angle of the probe were +-0.75 mm and +-1 mrad, respectively.

Characterization of the solid, airborne materials created when UF/sub 6/ reacts with moist air flowing in single-pass mode

Description: A series of experiments has been performed in which UF/sub 6/ was released into flowing air in order to characterize the solid particulate material produced under non-static conditions. In two of the experiments, the aerosol was allowed to stagnate in a static chamber after release and examined further but in the other experiments characterization was done only on material collected a few seconds after release. Comparison of the CRAY X-MP-4, Fujitsu VP-200, and Hitachi S-810/20 : an Argonne Perspective

Description: A set of programs, gathered from major Argonne computer users, was run on the current generation of supercomputers: the CRAY X-MP-4, Fujitsu VP-200, and Hitachi S-810/20. The results show that a single processor of a CRAY X-MP-4 is a consistently strong performer over a wide range of problems. The Fujitsu and Hitachi excel on highly vectorized programs and offer an attractive opportunity to sites with IBM-compatible computers.

Confinement scaling and ignition in tokamaks

Description: A drift wave turbulence model is used to compute the scaling and magnitude of central electron temperature and confinement time of tokamak plasmas. The results are in accord with experiment. Application to ignition experiments shows that high density (1 to 2) . 10/sup 15/ cm/sup -3/, high field, B/sub T/ > 10 T, but low temperature T approx. 6 keV constitute the optimum path to ignition.

Convergence of a random walk method for the Burgers equation

Description: In this paper we consider a random walk algorithm for the solution of Burgers' equation. The algorithm uses the method of fractional steps. The non-linear advection term of the equation is solved by advecting ''fluid'' particles in a velocity field induced by the particles. The diffusion term of the equation is approximated by adding an appropriate random perturbation to the positions of the particles. Detailed conceptual design of a high temperature CO/sub 2/ sensor for geothermal brine. Final report, Task II

Description: The Task I pCO/sub 2/ sensor was evaluated in the laboratory and improvements incorporated. Of special note was the redesign of the internal reference electrode which offered greater stability, and improved reliability - a design both smaller and more simple. Discrete-coil investigations of modular stellarator configurations
