The Activity Coefficients of Hydrochloric Acid and Sodium Chloride in Hydrochloric Acid-Sodium Chloride Mixtures

Description: The activity coefficients of HCl and NaCl in HCl--NaCl mixtures were computed from literature data. The calculations are based on the observation that at constant ionic strength and temperature the logarithm of the activity coefficient of HCi in HCl--NaCl mixtures varies linearly with NaCl concentration. Apparatus for the Gasometric Study of Solid-Gas Reactions: Sodium Fluoride With Hydrogen Fluoride and Uranium Hexafluoride

Description: A gasometric apparatus for rapidly characterizing dissociation pressures, sorption equilibrium and kinetics, chemical states, and decomposition conditions was built and tested. The method involves the measurement of quantities of gases reacting with or evolving from known quantities of solid. Accuracies of better than plus or minus 1% were attained. In testing the capabilities of tue apparatus, the dissociation pressures of hydrogen fluoride and uranium hexafluoride over their respective comple… more

Backup water supplies to K Reactors, 1963

Description: The K Reactors were originally scoped to have three independent electrical power supplies and to be able to transfer process water, filtered water, raw water and electrical power from one K Plant to the other. It was required that shutdown flow to each reactor be available from at least four separate pumping stations. The originally scoped power level was 1300 MW, yet a plentitude of coolant supply means were provided, as can be seen from the above statements. Today, 1963, the K Reactors operat… more

Chemical Technology Division. Unit Operations Section Monthly Progress Report, June 1962

Description: The development of foam separation as a unit operation was considered from the distributor design and gas rate standpoints. The development of a shear and leach process for power reactor fuel processing is reported in which carburized Yankee prototype fuel assemblies were sheared to determine the effect of fuel element condition on the nature of the chopped pieces. A Squarkeen No. 3 moving blade lasted for 5894 cuts while a Kleencut blade failed at 320 cuts under normal program use. A plastics … more

CORE TRANSFER FUNCTION MODELS FOR SNAP SYSTEM KINETICS

Description: A distributed parameter transfer function is developed for SNAP type reactor cores. The coolant may be either boiling, non-boiling, or both. In the boiling case the Bankoff model is used to find the spatial distribution of voids. The transfer functions obtained are not simple polynomials. However, they are readily analyzed for stabilily using the 7090 program TRAFIC, which uses a Nyquist diagram approach. Some general conclusions resulting from these calculations are included. (auth)

Evaluation of the techniques for end-of-life shutdown of orbiting SNAP reactors

Description: Two techniques for the end-of-life shutdown of orbiting SNAP reactors are presented. One technique consists of two alternative methods for the destruction of the reactor core. This technique (and others) have been investigated during the past year. A second technique, uses a naturally occurring phenomena, which works on the principle of a low neutron absorbing nuclide decaying to a high neutron absorbing daughter (poison). The present design criteria for the latter technique is that only a smal… more

INSTRUMENT FOR DETERMINING CRUSHING STRENGTH OF PARTICLES

Description: An instrument for crushing-strength determinations of uncoated and pyrolytic-carbon-coated fuel particles (50 to 500 mu in diameter) was developed to relate the crushing strength of the particles to their fabricability. The instrument consists of a loading mechanism, load cell, and a power supply-readout unit. The information that can be obtained by statistical methods of the data analysis is illustrated by results on two batches of fuel particles. (auth)

Interim report experience with PT IP-467-C reducing minimum downtime

Description: The length of the minimum outage, or period of time during which a reactor must remain subcritical following a shutdown from equilibriu, is a direct function of the available excess reactivity. In reactors with unlimited safety system capacities, it is quite feasible to ``build in`` sufficient excess to allow complete override of the shutdown xenon transient, and thus, in effect, reduce the ``minimum downtime`` to zero. Present Hanford production reactors do not possess this unlimited capacity,… more

Pilot Plant Denitration of Purex Waste With Sugar

Description: Batch denitration of synthetic Purex waste was investigated in 12 batch runs in the pilot plant denitration unit. Sugar was continuously added to 25 liters of hot waste. After sugar addition was complete, the hot solution was digested for several hours. The reaction proceeded smoothly and was easily controlled. About 19 to 22 moles of nitric acid were destroyed per mole of sugar with a reaction pot temperature of 100 deg C and a digestion period of 12 hours. About 17 moles of nitric acid were d… more

A Plug-in-Type Mass Spectrometer Surface Ionization Source for Use With a Vacuum Lock

Description: A plug-in-type surface ionization source has been designed and built to be used with a mass spectrometer equipped with a vacuum lock. The sample filament mounts on a male plug which fits into a female receptacle mounted on a case plate. A firm electrical contact is realized. Sample plugs are changed without loss of vacuum and can be used with any geometrically orientated analyzer tube. (auth)

Production test IP-614-A: Irradiation of thorium target elements

Description: Limited irradiations of thorium target elements have been conducted at HAPO during the past ten years but large-scale irradiations have not been attempted. An obstacle encountered in thorium irradiation programs has been the formation of U-232, which is undesirable because of intense gamma radiation. Further study of the problem indicates that by employing certain restrictions during irradiation of the thorium a relatively ``clean``, free of U-232,,product U-233 may be obtained. The objectives … more

Recommended emergency procedure for extended outage at all IDP production reactors

Description: If for an unspecified reason it becomes necessary to shut down all eight production reactors for an extended period exceeding normal outage times, the following procedures are recommended. These procedures have been devised to render the maximum safe situation short of complete core discharge and to enable as efficient a reactor startup as possible following the outage. Specific topics include: general safety, startup efficiency, detailed shutdown procedure of reactor and water plant, and start… more

Tabulated Values of Scattered Gamma-Ray Fluxes in Water Interpolated From Moments Method Calculations

Description: Tables of scattered gamma-ray fluxes in water that are suitable for integration over source spectra were generated on the IBM-7090 computer by Lagrangian interpolation of moments method results for point isotropic gamma-ray sources. Values of the fluxes were obtained for a consistent set of scattered gamma-ray energies taken in steps of 0.1 Mev from 0.1 to 1.0 Mev and in steps of 0.25 Mev from 0.25 to 10 Mev. One table was obtained for each scattered energy for various values of the source ener… more
