Soldering of Uranium

Description: One of Its Monograph Series, The Industrial Atom.'' The joining of uranium to uranium has been done successfully using a number of commercial soft solders and fusible alloys. Soldering by using an ultrasonic soldering iron has proved the best method for making sound soldered joints of uranium to uranium and of uranium to other metals, such as stainless steel. Other method of soldering have shown some promise but did not give reliable joints all the time. The soldering characteristics of uranium… more

Reactivity of the Critical Experiment as a Function of Gap Width

Description: "The split reactor of the Critical Experiment is analyzed, using a single-energy group-diffusion approximation. A further approximation is introduced in that the two halves of the reactor are treated as a parallelopipeds rather than the half-cylinders. The reactivity of the reactor is obtained as a function of the separation of the two halves, both for the 'standard' uranium concentration and for various greater concentrations."

Measurement and Control of Radioactive Particulate Contamination: Summary Report

Description: The following report is meant to review the characteristics of airborne particulate contamination matter, which sets it apart from other phases of the radiation control program and make it necessary to apply to it different concepts, analytical procedures, and control measures.

Resonance Absorption of Thorium

Description: Abstract: Cadmium ratios for very thin (neutron and beta-wise) foils of thorium, gold, vanadium and indium have been measured in the glory hole of the WBNS. These cadmium ratios, together with the known thermal cross sections and a given calculated resonance integral for gold, were used to evaluare the resonance integrals of thorium, vanadium, and indium.

Progress Report on Waste Processing Development Project: The Concentration of Waste

Description: "The objective of the Waste Processing Development Project is to investigate the feasibility of concentrating high-level waste streams to their minimum volume and packaging such waste in containers that are primarily safe and transferable...This report describes experimental and pilot plant development work and enlarges upon two schemes: (1) the concentration of dilute waste solutions to 60 or 70 percent solids slurries in a batch slurry evaporator, removal of the residual water from the waste … more

Scale-Up of Alternate HRT Core

Description: "In order to determine the factors involved in the scale-up of cores with concentric inlet and outlet pipes, a 48 inch carbon steel flow model, geometrically similar to a 6 foot diameter core, has been assembled and tested...Visual studies were made of dye and gas behavior in the sphere, and quantitative measurements of point residence times were obtained through the use of conductivity cells actuating a Brush recorder. Static pressure drop across the core was measured."

Measurements of an Iron and Borated Water Shield in the Lid Tank : Experiment 10

Description: The following report measures a shield mockup in three regions: the first made almost entire of iron; the second, transition, region is made of various thicknesses of B4C; and the third region was borated water. The iron samples used in the experiments were made in the form of rectangular plates and place in the lid tank; however, the plates were not completely flat and created a water gap that was measured in this report.

Measurements of Bâ‚„C and Hâ‚‚O Shield in the Lid Tank : Experiment 11

Description: The following report measures neutrons and gammas in solid B4C, as well as measuring H2O containing .5% boron by weight in the lid tank. Quantities measured in the following report in borated water are: thermal neutron distribution along the center line of the source (Z); fast neutron dose vs. Z; Gamma dose vs. Z; and neutron absorption by boron within solid B4C.

Reactor Physics of Teapot - Part 3

Description: Introduction: This is the third of a series of memoranda concerning the statics of the teapot, a small-scale boiling reactor experiment, and covers power coefficients of reactivity, energy coefficients of fluid density, the poisoning effects of fission products, and production of gases. The numbering of the equations, figures, and tables thus follows that of CF 52-6-118.

Further Studies of Amines as Extractants for Uranium from Acid Sulfate Solutions

Description: Abstract: "Since the first report on the use of amines as uranium extractants (ORNL-1734) over eighty additional organo-nitrogen compounds have been examined for their ability to extract uranium from aqueous solutions, particularly sulfate solutions, of the types usually encountered in uranium ore processing. As before, the more promising of these (as well as other compounds previously reported) have been examined further with respect to other characteristics essential to practical application,… more

Engineering Study of Evaporation for Concentrating Radioactive Liquid Wastes : Engineering Research Final Report

Description: Summary: "The problem of evaporation of secondary radioactive wastes resulting from waste disposal studies at Mound Laboratoy has been studied experimentally to determine the fundamental design characteristics of a plant size unit. Emphasis, of course, was on decontamination, but the factors affecting foaming and scaling also had to be investigated and evaluated. Generally speaking, the final design is a standard type of evaporator, the only unique feature being the relation of the two effects.… more

Pressurized Loop membrane Demineralizer Tests : Final Report [for] January-June 1953

Description: A membrane demineralizer has been tested in a pressurized loop. The loop water resistivity was maintained in the 1-2 megohm range by ionized solid transfer in the demineralizer. The size and power requirement of the unit tested per gpm flow through the unit, were 2.3 cu ft and 100 watts. In view of the fact that present designed could reduce the size and required maintenance, further studies may be warranted.
