Sites of Azaserine Inhibition During Photosynthesis byScenedesmus

Description: The success attending the use of azaserine as a specific inhibitor of one atage in the metabolic pathway leading to the synthesis of inosinic acid in pigeon liver prompted us to use this antibiotic in a similar attack on purine synthesis in Scenedesmus. However, investigation of the products produced during photosynthesis by suspensions of these algae in the presence of azaserine showed that a more widespread interference with metabolism had occurred. The purpose of this communication is to des… more

Fast Electronics in High-Energy Physics

Description: A brief review of fast electronics is given, leading up to the present state of the art. Cherenkov counters in high-energy physics are discussed, including an example of a velocity-selecting Cherenkov counter. An electronic device to aid in aligning external beams from high-energy accelerators is described. A scintillation-counter matrix to identify bubble chamber tracks is discussed. Some remarks on the future development of electronics in high-energy physics experiments are included.

The Path of Carbon in Photosynthesis. XVII. Phosphorus Compounds as Intermediates in Photosynthesis

Description: Studies of carbon dioxide fixation in green plants using the C{sup 14} isotope have shown that in very short times phosphoglyceric acid contains most of the radioactivity. The tracer is present almost entirely in the carboxyl group. The importance of organic phosphates in the subsequent metabolism of phosphoglyceric acid can be seen from the accompanying photographs.

The Transcalifornium Elements

Description: During the past sixty years, four elements beyond californium on the atomic number scale have been synthesized by the transmutation of lighter elements. The first preparation of einsteinium and fermium occurred in a thermonuclear explosion. Mendelevium and element 102, however, were prepared by a more conventional method, that of charged particle bombardment of elements of high atomic number.
